So here’s what you get in the box:

  • 1000 scrambles on 200 cards
  • Game board
  • 30 sec Sand timer
  • Pawns
  • Pencils
  • Notepad
  • Instructions

Now let me explain the goal of the game:

Object of the Game

Your task is to solve Scrambles as quickly as possible and move forward on the game board. The first player to reach the ‘Finish’ space is the winner!

Setup

  • First, grab a pencil, a sheet of paper, and choose your playing piece. Put your playing piece on the ‘Start’ space.
  • Next, roll the die to determine who will be the card reader for the first round. The person with the highest roll goes first. The card reader’s job is to read out the Scramble for everyone to solve. The card reader doesn’t get to participate in solving the Scramble. At the end of the round, the player to the left of the card reader becomes the new card reader. The rotation always goes in a clockwise direction.

Rewritten Version:

Hey there! Let me tell you about this fun game we have. It’s called Scramble, and it’s all about solving word puzzles. The game comes with these cool game cards, and each card has five different categories. We’ve got Names, Numbers, Etcetera, Places & Things, and Clueless. Now, here’s the interesting part – each category corresponds to a number on the die. That’s right, we’ve got ‘1’ for Names, ‘2’ for Numbers, ‘3’ for Etcetera, ‘4’ for Places & Things, and ‘5’ for Clueless.

Now, let’s talk about how the game is played. In each round, the person who’s reading the Scramble, we call them the card reader, picks a category to read from based on what number they roll on the die. For example, if the card reader rolls a ‘1’, they’ll present a Scramble from the Names category. But here’s the twist – if they roll a ‘6’, they get to choose any category they want, without even looking at the game card first. It adds an element of surprise, don’t you think?

When we play Scramble, the card reader gets to choose the category for the round by rolling the die. If they get a ‘1’, it’s Names; if it’s ‘2’, it’s Numbers, and so on. Then, the card reader takes a card from the box and reads out the letters or digits in the Scramble for that category. They do this slowly and clearly, making sure everyone can hear and understand. While they do this, the rest of us write down the letters or digits on our sheets.

Once the card reader has finished reading the scrambled letters or digits, they give us a clue. This clue is on the card and it tells us what kind of word we should be thinking of. It could be something like “Female First Name” or “Food”. Remember, though, the clue can only be given after the letters or digits have been read out.

Now, here’s something important to note: in the Clueless category, no clue is given. Instead, the Scrambles are made up of everyday words that we should all be familiar with. So get ready to put your thinking cap on and start unscrambling those letters and digits!

Once the letters or numbers in the Scramble are read aloud and the clue is given, I immediately start the timer.

  • While the timer is counting down, we try to unscramble the letters or rearrange the numbers until the answer appears right in front of us. You only get one chance to guess the answer, so think carefully before blurting out your guess!
  • If we’re still stuck when the timer runs out, the person reading the card will reveal the first letter or number of the answer and start the timer again. This gives us another 30 seconds to guess the answer, but this time we know the first letter or number.
  • When time runs out, the first person to say the correct answer out loud wins. Then, they roll the dice to determine how many spaces they can move their game piece forward. For example, if they roll a ‘5’, they move ahead 5 spaces. But if the players can’t solve the Scramble in time, the card reader wins and gets to roll the dice to move forward.
  • Important Tips for Playing

    • In case you come across a scrambled name (e.g. ‘Famous Actress’), you only need to find the last name.
    • Although it may seem possible to form two valid answers using the same letters (e.g. LEMON and MELON), consider the answer given on the card as the correct one.
    • The Numbers category can be quite challenging. Keep in mind that zeros can appear at the beginning of the Scramble. If you are unsure about the answer to a number Scramble – whether it’s a specific date or a measurement – make a guess (you might get lucky)!

    Alternative Rules for Playing

When There Are Only 2 Players/Teams:

When you’re playing Mystify with only 2 players or teams, it becomes a head-to-head competition. The players or teams take turns being the card reader while the other player or team tries to solve the Scramble before time runs out.

Remember: If you can guess the answer correctly within the first 30 seconds, you get to add ‘3’ to your roll.

Playing with more than 6 players/teams:

Mystify can be played with groups of any size. When playing with larger groups, such as at parties or in classrooms, you can alter the game by following these steps:

    1. Instead of using the game board, write down the names of the players on a sheet of paper and choose someone to be the scorekeeper.
    2. The card reader can select the category by rolling the die. For example, ‘1’ can be Names, ‘2’ can be Numbers, and so on. If you roll a ‘6’, you can choose any category you like.
    3. The winner of each round, which is the person who solves the Scramble, will be awarded 5 points.
    4. First, I want to talk about the thrill of competition. There’s something truly exhilarating about going head-to-head with someone else, knowing that victory is within your grasp. It’s a feeling that can’t be replicated elsewhere.
    5. Next, let’s discuss the strategy involved in games. With each move you make, you have to carefully consider the consequences and weigh your options. It’s like a chess game, where you have to anticipate your opponent’s moves and plan accordingly.
    6. Now, let’s talk about the bonding that occurs when you play a game with others. You can build friendships, strengthen relationships, and create lasting memories. It’s a shared experience that brings people together.
    7. Moving on, I want to highlight the educational benefits of games. They can teach us valuable skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. Plus, they make learning fun and engaging.
    8. Another aspect of games that I find fascinating is their ability to transport us to different worlds. Whether it’s exploring a virtual reality or immersing ourselves in a captivating storyline, games have the power to ignite our imagination and take us on incredible journeys.
    9. Lastly, I want to mention the sense of accomplishment that comes with winning a game. When you finally achieve victory, there’s a surge of pride and satisfaction that washes over you. It’s a tangible reward for your efforts.

So, whether it’s the excitement of competition, the strategy involved, the social bonds formed, the educational value, the immersive experiences, or the sense of accomplishment, games offer so much more than just entertainment. They have the power to captivate, challenge, and inspire us. They are a true marvel of human creativity and innovation.

Now, I’ll leave you with a question: What is your favorite game and why?
