Monster Chase Game Rules

First, here’s what you’ll need: a group of friends, some open space, and lots of energy.
Now, let me explain how the game works. One person will be the monster, and the rest of the group will be the chasers. The goal of the game is for the chasers to catch the monster before it reaches a designated spot.
To start the game, the monster will stand at one end of the playing area, and the chasers will stand at the other. When someone shouts “Go!”, the monster will start running towards the designated spot, while the chasers try to catch up and tag the monster.
Here’s the catch – the monster can only run in a straight line. They cannot change direction or dodge the chasers. If the monster is tagged by a chaser, they become the new monster and the game continues.
Now, you’re probably wondering, who wins the game? Well, if the chasers manage to tag the monster before it reaches the spot, they win! But if the monster reaches the spot without getting tagged, they win instead.

Getting Ready
Okay, let’s get everything set up so we can start playing. Here’s what you’ll need:
– 20 Monster cards: These are the cards that represent the different monsters in the game. They each have their own unique abilities and characteristics.
– 1 Closet card: This card represents the closet that the monsters hide in. It’s an important card that players will interact with throughout the game.
– 10 Toy tiles: These tiles represent the toys that players can use to distract the monsters. They come in different shapes and sizes, and each has its own effect.
– 2 Expert tiles: These tiles represent the experts that players can hire to help them deal with the monsters. Each expert has their own special ability that can be used strategically.
– 3 Progression cards: These cards determine the goals and objectives for each round of the game. They provide a sense of progression and keep the game interesting.
– 1 rules booklet: This booklet contains all the rules and instructions for the game. It’s important to read through it before playing to make sure you understand how everything works.

The Setup Process
Setting up the game is simple and straightforward. Here’s how you do it:
1. Shuffle the 20 Monster cards and place them facedown in a stack.
2. Shuffle the 10 Toy tiles and place them facedown in a stack.
3. Shuffle the 2 Expert tiles and place them facedown in a stack.
4. Shuffle the 3 Progression cards and place them facedown in a stack.
5. Place the Closet card in the center of the playing area.
6. Each player takes turns drawing a hand of 4 Monster cards and 2 Toy tiles.

I have a fun game for you to play. It’s called Monster Shuffle. Here’s how you can set it up and get started:
- First, shuffle the Monster cards so that the child side is facing up. These cards have pictures of monsters on them, but they are hidden for now. Depending on how long you want the game to be, use 10, 15, or all 20 cards. Any unused cards can be put back in the box.
- Next, take the 10 Toy tiles and place them face down around the bed. Make sure there is enough space to move them around during the game.
- Now, assemble the monster using the 3 Progression cards. Flip them over so that the blue side is facing up.
- Take the Closet card and put it about 6 inches away from the bed.
- Choose one Monster card and reveal it. Put it above the bed, facing north. You can refer to figure 1 for help.
- For your first game, you won’t need the 2 Expert tiles. Set those aside for now.
How to Play the Scary Monsters Game
When it’s time to play the Scary Monsters Game, we take turns going in a circle. The person who isn’t scared of monsters goes first. Our goal is to try and find a toy that will make the monsters go away!
Each monster is only afraid of one specific toy, and you can see which toy scares which monster in the top right corner of the Monster card.
On your turn, you get to flip over a Toy tile. There are two things that can happen:
- If the toy you flip over can scare away one of the monsters hanging around the bed:
- You get to say, “Back into the closet, you monster!” and put the Monster card under the Closet card. This means that monster is gone!
- But be careful! If you scare away the last monster around the bed, a new monster will come out. You have to reveal a new monster and put it next to the bed so we have another one to deal with.
- After scaring away a monster, flip the toy face down and it’s the next person’s turn.
- If the toy you flip over doesn’t scare any of the monsters away (it’s not on any of the revealed Monster cards):
- Flip a single Progression card (from left to right). If you fail to guess correctly three times, introduce a new monster near the bed. Reveal the monster and place it in an available spot next to the bed: north, south, east, or west.
- Turn the Toy tile face down and end your turn.
To summarize, whenever you make a wrong guess, you need to flip a Progression card. If you fail to guess correctly three times in a row and all the Progression cards have the same color (either all blue or all red), a new monster is added near the bed.
The End of the Game
If we manage to send every single monster in the closet, we win!
The monsters win if they occupy all four spaces around the bed. They can also win if we have to reveal a Monster card because the third Progression card is flipped and the monster pile is empty.
If the monsters win, the best thing to do is to play another game and show them who’s boss!

Here are some ways to adjust the game to make it harder

Expert Hunters
The Expert tiles, which are colored blue, are a more advanced feature of the game. It’s best to incorporate them once you have mastered the basic gameplay. But, if you’re feeling bold, here’s how you can add them in.
To start, mix the Expert tiles in with the other tiles without looking at them. During the game, when you flip over one of these special tiles for the first time, nothing happens. Simply place it face down without flipping a Progression card.
The next time you flip over one of the special tiles (either the one you’ve already seen or the other one), it’s time for the special effect to take place. This effect can be seen in the image below:
Lastly, let’s talk about the “sock” Expert tile. It has a unique effect that you’ll want to keep in mind as you play.
Uh-oh! I have a problem with my sock. It’s not doing its job of scaring away monsters, and it’s causing a mess in my room! What should I do? Well, I learned a trick – if I put the sock face down and swap it with another tile that’s face down, maybe something good will happen. Of course, before I do that, I need to flip a Progression card and see what it says. Each card has a surprise in store for me. It’s like a little adventure!
The sneaky monster hiding under my bed
When I want to summon a new monster, I flip all the Progression cards I have and a monster immediately jumps out from under the bed. It can be quite scary!
The “Monsters in a Pack” Variation
Here’s a fun twist: the monsters team up and form a pack. The more monsters there are, the more difficult it becomes to scare them away! If there are multiple monsters lurking around the bed, I have to eliminate all of them at once.
Whenever I turn a tile that scares a monster away, I keep it face up. But I can’t relax just yet, because there might be other monsters still lurking. I need to find all the toys required to chase them away as well.
If I make a mistake, I have to flip the Toy tiles back face down without scaring any monsters away. It’s a bit unfortunate, but hey, everyone makes mistakes! And of course, a new Progression card is flipped over, keeping things interesting.
Welcome to the Fearless Hunters Variant!
Before we even start, let’s take a good look at all the Toy tiles. We’ll keep them face up for 10 seconds so everyone can see them, and then we’ll flip them back face down.
Next, we need to remove the middle Progression card. We’ll only keep the two end cards.
Now, here’s the twist: a new monster card will appear after only two failed attempts instead of three! It’s time to show those monsters who’s boss!
A Fun Game for Younger Players
