Rules for Playing Monopoly Socialism
Monopoly Socialism is a unique board game that combines the familiar mechanics of Monopoly with the political and economic realities of a socialist society. In this game, the goal is not to amass as much wealth as possible, but rather to work together to achieve common goals for the betterment of society.
Before we dive into the gameplay, let’s first understand the key concepts and rules that make Monopoly Socialism different from traditional Monopoly.
1. Co-opetition: In Monopoly Socialism, players must balance competition with cooperation. While they compete to earn and trade resources, they are also required to work together to achieve collective goals.
2. Shared Wealth: Unlike traditional Monopoly, money and property in Monopoly Socialism are not owned by individual players. Instead, they are shared collectively, reflecting socialist ideals of wealth distribution.
3. Helping Others: Players are encouraged to help each other through various means, such as sharing resources, teaming up to complete objectives, or contributing to community projects.
Now, let’s delve into the gameplay itself.
At the beginning of the game, each player selects a character card that represents a unique occupation. These occupation cards come with special abilities that can be used throughout the game.
The game board consists of various spaces, each with its own action or event. Some spaces represent community projects that players can contribute resources to. Successful completion of these projects benefits all players.
The game progresses in turns, with each player rolling dice to move around the board. As players land on different spaces, they can take actions such as collecting resources, trading with others, or contributing to community projects.
One important aspect of Monopoly Socialism is the Sharing Phase. At the end of each round, players must evaluate their collective progress towards their shared goals. They discuss and decide how to distribute resources and whether to adjust their strategy for the next round.
The game continues until the players collectively achieve or fail to achieve the set goals. The level of cooperation and success determines how the game ends and whether the players win or lose together.
Monopoly Socialism provides a thought-provoking and educational experience that prompts players to consider the challenges and benefits of working together towards a common goal. It fosters critical thinking, negotiation skills, and teamwork, making it an engaging and unique addition to the Monopoly family of games.
So gather your friends and embark on this cooperative journey that combines the spirit of Monopoly with the principles of socialism. It’s time to see if you can achieve prosperity and social equality for all!
Hey there, let’s team up and rebuild our community together!
The Game Includes:
- A Gameboard
- 6 tokens
- 16 Project cards
- 40 Contribution chips
- 44 Chance cards
- 2 Dice
- Label sheet
- Money pack
Let’s work together and cooperate to achieve the best for our community. As fellow citizens and community organizers, here’s what we promise to do:
- As we move around the board, we will contribute to each other’s projects to bring life back to our town, unless we decide to steal projects for our own benefit.
- We’ll make sure to always maintain our vital Community Fund, although we might deplete it if it gives us an advantage.
- While our main focus is the collective well-being, we can occasionally act in our own self-interest if it adds an extra element of fun!
Monopoly Socialism: Forget about competition and individual glory!
Forget competition and individual glory in the pursuit of a socialist utopia… unless you’re the first player to contribute all 10 of your chips to projects. Then YOU WIN!
What Makes Monopoly Socialism Different?
In Monopoly Socialism, we give a unique twist to the classic game. Here’s what you need to know:
Properties Are Projects
Instead of buying properties, you’ll be investing in projects. These projects aim to benefit the community instead of lining your own pockets.
Contributing to Projects
The goal is to contribute to projects rather than accumulating wealth for yourself. When you contribute, you help to build a socialist utopia.
Action Die
The action die adds an element of surprise and unpredictability to the game. It determines the type of action players can take on their turn, adding excitement and strategic decision-making.
The Community Fund
Instead of paying rent to other players, you’ll contribute to a community fund. This fund is used to invest in even bigger projects, creating a more equitable society for all.
Chance Cards
Chance cards in Monopoly Socialism create opportunities for players to collaborate or take actions that benefit the entire community. It’s all about working together for the greater good.
Setup
To get started, follow these steps:
1. Choose a player to be the banker.
2. Each player picks a token and places it on “GO.”
3. Shuffle the project cards and give each player three cards.
4. Place the Community Chest and Chance cards face down on their respective spots on the board.
5. Each player starts with 10 contribution chips.
6. Roll the action die to determine who goes first.
Now that you understand the fundamental changes in Monopoly Socialism, get ready to experience a game that promotes cooperation and collective success. Are you ready to contribute to the socialist utopia? Then let’s play!
- Spread the Project cards all over the board.
- Put M1848 (the year The Communist Manifesto was published!) in the Community Fund. Keep the rest of the money in the box as the Bank.
- Mix up the Chance cards. Put them face down.
- Every player gets 10 Contribution chips in their chosen color.
- Each player picks a token and puts it on GO.
- Place the dice next to the gameboard.

How to Win
The first person to put all 10 of their Contribution chips on community projects WINS!
The oldest player starts first. Play moves to the left.
- Remember, you cannot bid on a project that you’re auctioning.
- The bidding starts at M5, and anyone can increase the bid by as little as M5.
- You don’t have to bid in turn order.
- The auction continues until no player is ready to raise the bid any further.
- The highest bidder has to pay the Bank. If they don’t have enough money to cover the entire bid, the Community Fund covers the shortfall.
- If you find a project managed by another player, you can contribute by paying M10 to that player and placing one of your chips on any available space on that Project card.
- If you find a project that you manage, you can contribute by paying M10 to the Bank and placing one of your chips on any available space on the Project card.
- First and foremost, it’s crucial to use your own money to make any payments. If you don’t have the funds, the Community Fund will step in and cover the cost.
- If you already have a Chance card before rolling the dice, and you need to draw from the deck, go ahead and draw a card. Then, choose one card to play or keep, and put any others back at the bottom of the deck.
- If the card you choose tells you to take money from the Community Fund, you have to do it right away. After that, return the card to the bottom of the deck. If the card doesn’t ask you to take money, you can play it right away or keep it for later.
- Remember, you can only play one Chance card per turn. So make it count!
- Option 1: On your next turn, you can pay M50 to the Bank from your own funds. Once you’ve paid, you can roll the dice and move as normal.
- Option 2: If you happen to have a Get Out of Jail Free card, you can use it on your next turn. Just keep in mind that if you use it, the card will go to the bottom of the deck. But hey, at least you’ll be free to roll the dice and continue with the game.
- Option 3: If you don’t have a Get Out of Jail Free card, you can try to buy one from another player. It’s worth a shot, right?
- Option 1: When a player has gone and placed all 10 of their Contribution chips onto community projects. And let me tell you, our whole town benefits from your socialist spirit. But guess what? You’re the big winner in this case!
- Option 2: When the Community Fund runs out. Yup, that means our socialist utopia crumbles. And you know what? Well, everyone ends up losing. Tough break.

If you’re in charge of any projects, you have the option to develop yourself at the start of your turn. All you need to do is add one Contribution chip to an open space on one of your Project cards and pay the self-development project fee to the Bank. This fee is specified on the card. Take note of this process if you ever have to manage projects.
To begin your turn, roll both dice. The numbered die will determine your base roll, while the action die will either add moves to your L roll or give you the opportunity to draw Chance cards. You can perform the following actions in any order:
– Move your token forward by the total number of spaces rolled between the regular die and the action die.
– If the action die allows it, draw one or two Chance cards.
Remember, you have the freedom to decide the order in which you want to carry out these actions. So go ahead and self-develop while taking advantage of this opportunity to move forward and draw Chance cards.
Imagine this: you’re playing a board game. You roll the dice and move your playing piece, eagerly awaiting your fate. But wait, something is different this time. The game has thrown you a curveball, a mysterious number that needs to be added to your standard die roll. What does it mean? How will it affect your progress? Let’s unravel this intriguing enigma together.
When you come across the instruction to add a number to your standard die roll, it’s like discovering a hidden treasure chest in your favorite game. This extra number can tip the scales in your favor or present a new challenge to overcome. It’s an unexpected twist that keeps things interesting and adds a layer of excitement to your gaming experience.
So, why would game designers introduce this additional element? Well, they understand that unpredictability is a key ingredient in creating a thrilling gaming adventure. By including this extra number, they inject an element of surprise into the gameplay, elevating it to a whole new level.
When you follow this remarkable instruction, you get to navigate uncharted territory. It’s like embarking on a daring quest where the path before you is unknown. But that’s the beauty of it – you have the chance to adapt and find new strategies. This additional number challenges you to think outside the box and make decisions based on the ever-changing circumstances.
While this mysterious number may seem perplexing at first, don’t fret. Embrace the unknown and allow your creativity to flourish. Who knows? This unique twist might just be the spark that ignites a fire of ingenuity within you, leading you to victory.
In conclusion, the instruction to add a number to your standard die roll is like discovering a hidden treasure chest in your favorite game. It adds an element of surprise and challenges you to adapt your strategies. Embrace the unknown, and let the thrill of unpredictability propel you towards victory.
Roll the dice and get ready for a surprise – your standard roll is about to double!
Hey there! Let’s play a little game, shall we? I’ve got a deck of cards here, and I want you to draw one Chance card. Oh, but here’s the twist – if you already have a Chance card, you’ve gotta discard it and put it back at the bottom of the deck. Exciting, right?
So here’s the deal: you draw two Chance cards. But if you already have one, you gotta toss two back in the deck, right at the bottom.
Now, let me ask you something – did you roll doubles? If you did, then guess what? You get to roll the dice again and take another turn. Pretty sweet, huh?
But hey, watch out! If you roll doubles three times in a row, you’re in trouble. You gotta go straight to Jail, no questions asked. Don’t even bother finishing your third turn. Tough break, buddy!
Alright, that’s all the important stuff you need to know for now. Keep an eye out for the different spaces as you land on them, and enjoy your time in our awesome community!
Oh, and one more thing – all the money stuff, the payments and whatnot, they come from our shared Community Fund. Until you start making some real income from your projects, that’s where the cash comes from. We’re all in this together!
Welcome to Our Community (a.k.a. the Board Spaces)
Community Projects
Our town is pretty great already, but we can make it even better. We’ve got these cool community projects that we’re working on together. It’s all about reviving our businesses and making our community resources even more awesome.
Unmanaged Projects
When you come across an unmanaged project, you have two options: manage it or put it up for auction.
Want to manage the project?
You can choose to buy the project by paying the listed price to the Bank. If you don’t have enough money, you can use the Community Fund. Once you make the payment, you get the Project card.
Don’t want to manage the project or can’t afford to?
In that case, you must auction the project.
If no one wants to bid on the project, it remains unmanaged, and the Project card stays where it is.
Managed Projects
If you’re running a project, you have the option to work on one project before you roll. This is called self-developing. To self-develop, you need to add a Contribution token to the Project card and pay the self-development fee to the Bank.
When you come across a project that is managed by you or someone else, you can choose to contribute to it. It’s important to contribute all 10 of your Contribution chips to projects in our community if you want to win!
Projects in Progress
A project becomes complete when all the spaces on the Project card are filled with Contribution chips. Once a project is fully developed, no more chips can be added to it.
Here are some important things to note:
– If you happen to land on a fully developed project, the Bank is required to pay both the manager of that project and the Community Fund the same amount. You can find the specific payout amount on the Project card.
– If you manage two fully developed projects in a color set and another player lands on one of them, you receive payouts from both projects as the manager. The Community Fund also receives a payout. You can find the individual payout amounts on each Project card.
Now, let’s move on to the Action Spaces.
Go
When I land on GO, I receive M50 from the Bank. This is the amount of money I need to survive. Then, I must immediately give at least M5 to the Community Fund.
Chance
Hey there! Let’s talk about Chance cards in Monopoly. They can really shake things up in the game. Here’s how they work:
Chance Card |
Community Shuttle
So, picture this: you’ve landed on a Shuttle Stop. Now you have a decision to make. Should you pay M50 to the Bank and hop on the Community Shuttle, or should you skip it and move ahead? Let me break it down for you.
If you choose to take the Shuttle, you’ll need to fork over M50 from the Community Fund. With that ticket, you can travel to any project between your current stop and the next one. Pretty cool, right? But wait, there’s more. Once you arrive, you still get to perform the action of the space you’ve landed on. So it’s like hitting two birds with one stone!
But what if you want to keep going? Well, you can, but there’s a catch. For each additional Shuttle Stop you pass, you’ll have to shell out another M50. Yeah, it’s like paying for the luxury of moving further. But hey, no one collects M50 when you use the Shuttle to pass GO, so at least you get a little break there.
Free Parking
So, what happens when you park your car for free in our neighborhood? Well, the answer is simple – nothing! No need to worry at all. Just sit back, relax, and take in the beautiful surroundings of our peaceful community.
So you’ve landed here, huh? Don’t fret! Just put your token in the Just Visiting section. No need to stay for long. You’ll be out in no time.
Now, let’s talk about that dreadful “Go to Jail” space. It’s like a black hole that sucks you in. But don’t despair! I’ve got some tips to help you navigate this tricky situation.
First, remember that going to jail isn’t the end of the world. It’s just a setback, a temporary pause in your journey. Think of it as a chance to catch your breath and strategize for your next move.
If you find yourself in jail, don’t forget about the Get Out of Jail Free card. It’s your ticket to freedom, your get-out-of-jail pass. Keep it safe and use it wisely, my friend.
But what if you don’t have the card? Don’t worry, there’s still hope. You can roll the dice and try to get doubles. If you succeed, you’ll be out of jail in no time. It’s all about luck and timing, my friend.
Oh, and one more thing. While you’re in jail, you can still collect rent from your properties. Isn’t that neat? It’s like making money while lounging in a cozy cell. Talk about making the most of a bad situation!
So remember, when life throws you in jail, don’t panic. Stay calm, strategize, and keep your eyes on the prize. You’ll get back in the game in no time. And hey, who knows? This little detour might just give you the edge you need to conquer the board and emerge victorious. Good luck!
Uh-oh! Looks like you landed in Jail! Don’t worry, this happens sometimes in the game. Let me explain what happens when you find yourself in this predicament:
First things first – you’ll need to move your game piece to the In Jail space. Unfortunately, this means that you won’t be able to pass GO and collect any money. In fact, the Bank will even take M50 from the Community Fund. Tough break, I know.
While you’re stuck in Jail, there are still a few things you can do to stay in the game. You can continue to manage any projects that you’re involved in, and you’re still allowed to auction and trade with other players. However, there are a couple of things you can’t do – you can’t self-develop any new projects, and you can’t use the Community Fund for anything.
Now, let’s talk about how you can get out of Jail:
Good news! You have three options to choose from:
Jail
Getting stuck in Jail can be a real bummer. But don’t worry, there’s a chance for freedom! On your next turn, roll the standard die and hope for a 6. If you roll that lucky number, you get to roll both dice again and move as usual – you’re out of Jail! You can try up to three turns to get that 6 with the standard die. If you haven’t rolled a 6 by your third turn, it’s time to pay up.
If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, you’ll need to pay M50 to the Bank. But don’t worry, we’ve got a last chance option for you. You can use your final roll with the standard die to move, even if you can’t afford to pay. Keep in mind, though, that if you can’t pay by your third turn, your fellow players will have to chip in M50 between them to help you out. They’ll decide how to split this amount. And if everyone else is broke too, the money can come from the Community Fund.
Deals & Trades
Trading projects is an exciting part of the game. At any time, you can buy, sell, or swap projects with other players. The value of the projects being traded is up to the players involved in the deal. You can negotiate for cash, other projects, or even the coveted Get Out of Jail Free card.
Don’t forget, when you trade projects, the Contribution chips are included! So think carefully before making a trade – those chips hold value!
Help! I Can’t Pay
Hey there! So, here’s the deal. If you don’t have any money and you need to pay for something, except to get out of Jail, then you gotta take it from the Community Fund. That’s the rule.
