Alright, here’s what you need to do:

First, shuffle all the red cards and place the pile face down next to the board.

Next, shuffle all the blue cards and give each player five cards at random. Put the remaining blue cards in a face-down pile next to the board.

Now, each player picks a pawn and puts it on the Home spot.

Let’s move on to the gameplay:

A game of Man Bites Dog goes on for several rounds until someone reaches a total of 500 points. We start with the youngest player and continue clockwise.

At the beginning of each round, the oldest player turns over the top three red cards and puts them face-up in the red “Extra” spaces on the board.

Then, each player looks at their hand and decides if they want to get rid of any cards. The oldest player discards first, followed by the other players in clockwise order. Everyone can discard up to three cards.

Once we all get rid of the cards we don’t want, we’re given the same number of new cards from the deck.

When it’s my turn, I get to create a headline. I can pick any number of blue cards from my hand and up to two red cards from the “Extra” spaces on the game board. The headline has to make sense with the subjects, but it can be funny and wacky. Let me give you an example:

• Good Example: CIA Knows About Ninja Intern
• Bad Example: Blind History Blames iPhone

I earn points based on the total value of the cards I use in my headline. If I manage to use all five blue cards from my hand for one headline, I even get an extra 10 points. Score!

If I can’t make a headline, I can choose to pass my turn. In that case, I have to get rid of some cards from my hand and draw new ones until I have five blue cards.

Once I play my headline, I have to add up the points from the cards I played. I move my pawn that many points forward on the game board.

After that, I discard all the blue cards from the board and get the same number of cards from the deck to my hand. The red cards go back to the red “Extra” spaces, and it’s the next player’s turn.

End of the Round

At the end of each round, we discard the red cards into a special pile. If none of us has scored 500 points yet, the youngest player flips three more red cards to start the next round.

When we’re playing the game, I can challenge the acceptability of your headline. But don’t worry, you can do the same to me! Everyone else, besides the person who made the headline, gets to vote on whether they think it’s acceptable or not.

If we end up with a tie, I still have a say. I can vote as the active player. If our headline gets voted as unacceptable, we have to pick up our blue cards and come up with a new headline. But here’s the catch – we have to deduct 20 points from our round score. Ouch!

Create Your Own Cards

Imagine drawing a special blank blue card in the game. These are called create-your-own cards! When it’s your turn, you can play this card and use a dry erase marker to write any word on it that you want. How cool is that?

Once you’ve used the card, just erase the word you wrote and put the card in the discard pile with the other blue cards.

Important: If you’re just starting out and want to make the game a little easier, you can take out the create-your-own cards before shuffling the deck.

Exclusive Cards

In addition to create-your-own cards, there are three types of exclusive cards that can give your story a boost!

On your turn, you have the chance to play a single exclusive card from your hand and place it right into the discard pile. These exclusive cards give you special bonuses:

• Exclusive Photo card: When you have this card, you get to add 25 points to your score for the round. It’s like a special bonus!
• Exclusive Story card: With this card, you can draw the top card from the red deck and use that verb instead of one of the verbs on the board. Just remember to discard that verb after your turn.
• Exclusive Interview card: This card lets you discard any number of extra blue cards from your hand and draw the same amount of new blue cards from the deck, plus 1. You don’t even have to pass the turn. It’s like a free refill!

End of the Game

When you reach a score of at least 500 points at the end of a round, you win! If two or more players have at least 500 points in the same round, the winner is the player who has the highest total score. So aim high!

If two players have the same score, the game ends in a tie. Sometimes, it’s just too close to call!
