Luna Game Rules
Hey there! I bet you’re excited to learn all about the game rules for Luna, right? Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’m here to break it down for you and make it super clear, so you can start playing in no time. Let’s go!
Objective
The objective of Luna is to collect as many points as you can by finding and matching pairs of cards. The game is played with a deck of cards that have different pictures on them. Your job is to flip over two cards at a time and try to find a match. Sounds easy, right? Well, there’s a catch!
The Catch
Here’s where things get interesting. The cards are all face down, so you can’t see what’s on them. You have to rely on your memory skills to remember where each card is located. When you flip over a card, it stays face up for a short amount of time. You need to remember the position of the cards you’ve seen so that you can find a pair when you flip over another card.
The Gameplay
Now that you know the objective and the catch, let’s talk about how to play Luna. It’s super simple, I promise!
- Start by shuffling the deck of cards.
- Place the cards face down in a grid formation.
- On your turn, flip over two cards of your choice.
- If the cards match, you score a point and get to go again.
- If the cards don’t match, remember their positions and it’s the next player’s turn.
- Keep playing until all the cards have been matched.
See? I told you it was easy! Just remember to use your memory skills and pay close attention to the cards.
Scoring
In Luna, the goal is to score as many points as possible. You score a point every time you find a matching pair of cards. The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. Simple, right?
Conclusion
That’s all there is to it! Now that you know the game rules for Luna, you’re ready to start playing. Remember to have fun and test your memory skills as you search for those matching pairs. Happy gaming!

- Here are some tips for your first play:
Before we get started, let me give you some instructions on how to set up the game board for Holy Isles. It’s a bit different from the standard setup, but don’t worry, I’ll guide you through it.
First, you’ll need to follow these steps:
I’m going to give you a simpler version with the same meaning and conversational tone. Here it is:
The Figures
This Holy Isle is the first one in the preselected setup. Put 2 Novices of each color and the Moon Priestess figure on this Isle.

I’m the Moon Priestess, and my power lies in granting influence points at the close of each round.
Imagine this: I’m standing tall, illuminated by the radiant glow of the moon above.
Let me explain what it means to be a Moon Priestess. You see, when the round reaches its end, I possess the ability to bestow influence points upon those with the fortune of crossing my path. It’s a power that sets me apart, a unique gift that holds great significance.
Now, let’s dive deeper.
If you find yourself in search of those elusive influence points – the key to success in our realm – then you’ve come to the right place.
As a Moon Priestess, it is my duty to illuminate the path to these coveted rewards.
When the day’s battle draws to a close, the influence points I grant can make all the difference in your triumph or defeat, your rise or fall. They have the power to elevate your status, to propel you towards victory, or perhaps even to regenerate a response you thought was lost.
But remember, this power is a double-edged sword – it holds great potential, but must be wielded wisely.
It is important to understand the intricacies of influence points, to interpret their meaning and harness their strength for your benefit. Luckily, I am here to guide you on this journey.
So, if you’re ready to embrace the moon’s radiance and unlock the full potential of influence points, then allow me to shed light on the path ahead.

Apostate: Sigh. Sometimes, I can’t help but scratch my head when it comes to apostates. You know, those players who have this little quirk of losing influence points at the end of a round. It’s a bit puzzling, isn’t it? I mean, why would anyone willingly let go of their hard-earned points like that?
#image.jpg
The Shrine Builder: allows you to create Shrines with ease.
#image.jpg
The Temple Guardian: has an important role in the game as a round counter. It gives the go-ahead to release batches of Temple tiles from one round to the next.
Playing the Game
Preliminary Round: At the beginning of the game, each player places 1 Shrine and 4 sets of 2 Novices on the 7 Holy Isles. They also receive 2 Favor tokens.
The game consists of 6 rounds, each of which has two different phases:
A. Action Phase: In this phase, players take turns to perform an action until all the Time tokens are used up.
B. Scoring Phase:
- Scoring: Players receive influence points from the Moon Priestess and for the Novices they have in the Temple. They lose points if they have Novices on the Isle with the Apostate.
- Preparing the Next Round: Novices are returned to the Holy Isles, the Time tokens are prepared, and the 4 figures are moved to their new positions.
After 6 rounds, you’ll get extra points for your Shrines, unused Favor tokens, and your position in the Council of Priests. The player who has the most points wins the game.
Preliminary Round
- If you use the preselected setup, there won’t be a Preliminary Round.
- Starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player puts one of their Shrines on a Holy Isle of their choice. You have to pick different Isles – no Isle can have more than one Shrine at the start of the game. In a 2-player game, you can’t pick the Herbal Isle.
- Next, starting with the first player, players take turns to put 4 sets of 2 Novices on the Isles. A player can’t put a set on an Isle that already has their pieces (including the Shrine). The pieces of other players don’t matter for this placement.
Finally, I get to have my share of the spoils! Each player gets one Favor token from the two Isles they haven’t used. It’s time to strategize and make my move. Here’s how the Action Phase works:
First, the start player takes their turn, then we go around in order. Each player gets to play one action. An action can impact one or more Novices and might require using a Favor token. You’ll find a list of all available actions on the Overview sheets, along with detailed explanations on the following two pages. It’s time to seize the moment and make some bold moves!
For Beginners:
Here are the important things to know:
- Only active beginners can take actions. All the beginners on the Holy Isles are considered active.
- When you take an action that involves beginners, they become inactive and are placed next to the Holy Isle.
You can only take actions with your own beginners.
Power Tokens:
When you use power tokens, return them to their matching Isles. You can only have one token of each type at a time.
Isle Actions (Actions that address a specific Isle)
Let’s talk about Isle Actions, which are actions specifically designed to address a particular Isle. These actions are important for a variety of reasons. For example, they can help maintain the balance and health of the Isle, ensuring that it remains a vibrant and thriving ecosystem.
So, what exactly are Isle Actions? Well, they are actions that are focused on a specific Isle and its unique needs. These actions can range from simple tasks like cleaning up litter or planting trees to more complex ones like implementing conservation measures or promoting sustainable practices.
Isle Actions are important because they allow us to take responsibility for our environment and make a positive impact on the world around us. By engaging in these actions, we can help protect and preserve the natural beauty and resources of the Isle.
When it comes to choosing the right Isle Actions, there are a few factors to consider. First, you need to understand the specific challenges and needs of the Isle you are working on. This will help you determine what actions are most relevant and effective. Additionally, it’s important to consider your own skills, resources, and limitations when selecting Isle Actions. You want to choose actions that you can realistically accomplish and that align with your abilities and interests.
By following these guidelines and taking Isle Actions, you can contribute to the well-being of the Isle and help create a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly future. So, I encourage you to get involved and make a difference. Remember, even small actions can have a big impact. Together, we can protect and preserve our beautiful Isles for generations to come.
Priest’s Favor: Earn a Token of Favor
To gain a Token of Favor from a Holy Isle, simply assign two Novices to that specific Isle. Keep in mind, you cannot earn a Token for an Isle you already possess.
Shrine Bonus: If you already have a Shrine on the Isle in question, you only need one Novice. “Your Novices offer aid to the Priest residing on the Isle. As a gesture of gratitude, he owes you a favor”.
#image.jpg
Recruit (Adding Newcomers to Your Group)
Welcome to the order! We have a special way of recruiting new members. Take two newcomers and assign them to the Holy Isle. If you have an extra newcomer, you can place them next to the Isle. This will make a total of three inactive newcomers.
Shrine (Reaping Benefits in “Priest’s Favor” and “Promotion”)
Hey there! Let me show you how to build a Shrine on the Holy Isle. All you need to do is return a Shrine Favor token and use 2 Novices with the master builder. Then, voila! A shiny new Shrine will be built there, but remember, you can only have one Shrine on each Isle. Don’t worry though, there can be Shrines from different players.
Shrines bring lots of good things with them. They’re like a lucky charm! For one, they give you special benefits. But that’s not all – they also earn you Shrine Favor tokens, which can be really handy. So go ahead, build a Shrine and see the amazing things it can do for you!
- Earn 4 influence points for each Novice at the end of the game.
- Only one Novice is required for the “Priest’s Favor” and “Promotion” actions.
- Novices count towards the total number during Moon Priestess scoring.
Herbs (Revive Your Novices)
Trade in an Herbal Favor token to bring back 1 or 2 inactive Novices on a Holy Isle.
Exception: You can’t use this on the Herbal Isle itself!
Movement Actions
(How can novices move to other Isles?)
The Journey of Active Novices to Inactivity
You can move active Novices and position them alongside Holy Isles.
The ebb and flow of Active and Inactive Novices
If you return a Tidal Favor token, you can choose to relocate as many of your active or inactive Novices as you want. You can move them from any of your Holy Isles or from the Landing stage of the Temple Island.
#image.jpg
Sailboat: Active Novice Relocation
If you have a Sailboat Favor token, you can use it to move 1 or 2 Novices from one Holy Isle or from the Landing stage of the Temple Island to another Holy Isle. The Novices you move will remain active and ready for action!
Temple Actions: Access for Novices
Promotion: Claim a Temple Tile
To get a free Temple tile that matches the symbol on the Holy Isle, you’ll need two Novices. These Novices should come from the same Holy Isle. The tile you’re looking for must be approved, which means it lies between the Guard and the Landing Stage.
Once you have the Novices and the approved tile, place one Novice on the Temple tile. The second Novice from the same Isle should be deactivated.
If you have a Shrine on the Holy Isle, you can skip using the second Novice. Shrine owners don’t need the additional Novice.
Alternatively, if you have a bribery Favor token, you can use it to claim a tile that lies between the Guard of the Temple and the next free Guard tile.
Note: Remember that you can’t use a Novice Favor token to claim a Temple tile. It can only be used for other purposes.
Sanctification (Place a Novice in the Temple and Gain Influence)
Here’s what you can do: take an already claimed and approved Temple tile, along with its Novice, and move them to the corresponding space in the Temple.
If you have a bribery Favor token, you can use it to return an already claimed but not yet approved tile to the Temple. This tile would be the one situated between the Guard of the Temple and the next available Guard tile.
Now, let’s talk about the outcome. Depending on whether you choose to use bribery or not, you will earn a certain number of influence points. This number will be equal to the value printed on the Guard tile where the Guard is currently standing.
Displacement: When I place a new Novice, I can move any opponent Novices that meet these criteria:
- The new Novice is next to the opponent Novice.
- The new Novice is on a tile with a higher number.
- The opponent’s Novice isn’t protected by a “Book of Wisdom”.
I can send the displaced Novices to the Temple’s landing stage. If I have a “Sailboat” or “Tide” Favor token, I can pick them up. And here’s the best part — for every displaced Novice, I gain 1 influence point!
Book (gain influence and protection)
If you find a “book of Wisdom” Favor token, you can exchange it for a “Book of Wisdom” already in the Temple.
Choose one of your Novices in the Temple who doesn’t have a Book, and put the “Book of Wisdom” you chose underneath them. You’ll earn 1 influence point as a reward. Plus, as long as the Book stays there, the Novice is safe from being moved around.

Joining the Council of Priests (ascending in the Council of Priests)
Hey there! If you want to climb higher in the Council of Priests, here’s what you can do. Gather as many Novices as you’d like from any one Isle. Then move your “Member of the Council” game piece up the board, just like an elevator, for a number of seats equal to the amount of Novices you used. Cool, right? You can even place your piece on top of other players’ pieces if there’s room, except for the very last seat. If that seat is empty, put your piece at the bottom of the stack. Easy peasy!
Other Things You Can Do
Exiling the Apostate (kicking out the troublemaker)
Let’s imagine a scenario together. You and I are on a magical journey to the Holy Isle, accompanied by a group of novices who are eager to learn. We have a mission to complete, and it involves using the novices strategically.
Introducing the Apostate
Now, meet the enigmatic character known as the Apostate. By using the Apostate’s power, we can achieve remarkable things.
Here’s what we need to do:
- Take a group of novices on the Holy Isle with us. They are excited and ready to learn.
- Now, let’s perform a special action. We will call it “A Novice During Another Action.”
- During this action, we will replace one of the novices with a virtual novice.
- To determine which novice to replace, we must count the number of novices we have used so far.
- This number will dictate the next step: moving the Apostate a specific number of Isles in a clockwise order.
- How many Isles? The same number as the novices we used.
By following these steps, we can unleash the true potential of the novices and the Apostate. Together, they will help us conquer any challenge that comes our way.
Now that we know the power of the Apostate and how to use him with the novices, our journey becomes even more exciting! Let’s continue our adventure with confidence and unleash the magic within!
If you’re a beginner in the game, you can use the Novice Favor token to replace one of your Novice characters during your turn.
- Just remember that you can’t replace the Novice who claims a Temple tile.
- Also, you can’t use the token to get back the Novice Favor token if you’ve lost it.
Take a Break and Meditate (Spend a Time token)
If you don’t want to take action, just take a Time token from the top pile and put it onto another pile. But remember, this doesn’t end your turn! When it’s your turn again, you can still take another action.
But be aware, once the last Time token is turned, the Action Phase is over. The player who turned the last token earns 1 influence point, and the player to their left becomes the start player for the next round. In a 2-player game, pass the start player figure to your opponent.
B. Scoring Phase
In this phase, players earn or lose influence points in three ways: earning influence in the Temple and on the Isle with the Moon Priestess, but losing influence on the Isle with the Apostate.
Moon Priestess:
As I step onto the Isle with the Moon Priestess, I carefully count the Novices and Shrines of each player. It’s a competition to see who has the most active ones. The player with the highest number will gain influence points equal to the large, printed number. It’s a way to show who has the most influence.
For the second and third places, things are a bit different. They will also gain influence points, but it will be equal to the smaller numbers. So it’s not as many as the winner, but still something to strive for. If there are any ties, we look at the relative position of the players in the Council of Priests to break it. It’s all about who’s higher up.
But what if there’s more than one player on the same space? In that case, the player whose piece has moved the farthest will break the tie. And if there’s still a tie, then the player whose piece is on top gets to break it. It’s all about finding a way to determine a clear winner.
Now, here’s an interesting twist. If there is no second or third place, then nobody receives the influence points of those places. So it’s important to aim for one of the top spots to get rewarded. There’s no consolation prize for the stragglers.
“The Moon Priestess has a special role on the Isle. She ministers a Service and rewards the participants who are the most eager”. It’s a way to recognize those who are truly dedicated.
Apostate:
Hey there! Let’s talk about what happens on the Isle of the Apostate. We need to count the active and inactive Novices of each player. Once we have those numbers, each player will lose influence points equal to their count plus one. But don’t worry, if a player doesn’t have any Novices on or next to the Isle, they won’t lose any influence.
Now, it’s important to note that the Apostate doesn’t have any effect on Shrines. The Apostate’s goal is to tempt the Novices, and it seems like they’re succeeding at that. Sneaky!
Temple:
Here’s something cool – each player gains 1 influence point for each of their Novices in the Temple. So the more Novices in the Temple, the more influence points you get. Nice!
Oh, and here’s another awesome thing: players get a reward for each round that their Novices serve in the Temple. Talk about dedication!
Preparing The Next Round
Now, when it’s time to prepare for the next round, here’s what we do:
- We bring back all the inactive Novices and make them active again on their Isles. Everyone gets a second chance!
- The Moon Priestess and Master Builder figures move to another Isle in a clockwise direction. They move a number of Isles equal to the large, printed number. It’s like a little game of musical chairs!
- As the game progresses, the Apostate will move in a clockwise direction to the next Isle that has at least one Novice present.
- The Guard of the Temple, on the other hand, will continue moving along the path around the Temple. As he moves, the Guard tile he just left will be removed from play. Once he reaches the last Guard tile, the final round begins.
- During setup, the Time tokens were stacked in a specific way. At the end of each round, these tokens should be restacked in the same manner.
How the Game Ends
The game will come to an end after the completion of the 6th round.
At the end of the game, players will receive additional influence in three different categories:
- Each Shrine that a player controls will earn them 4 influence points.
- For every unused Favor token that a player has, they will gain 1 influence point.
- Players will also receive influence points based on their position in the Council of Priests.
After all is said and done, it’s time to tally up our influence points. Whoever has the highest score becomes the winner, and their Order gets to choose the next Moon Priestess.
In the event of a tie, the outcome is determined by the player’s position in the Council of Priests.
Let me break down how yellow is scored for you:
A Few Special Rules for the 2-player Game
- For the setup, you only need 3 Time tokens.
- In the Preliminary Round, neither player can put their Shrines on the Herbal Isle.
- After each round, the player who started passes the start player figure to the other player.
- If you’re the first player to use a Book token in a round, you get 2 influence points instead of 1.
