Setup

Hey there! So, here’s the deal. You can choose to play with the standard set of cards, or you can mix things up with the expansion set or even create your own custom set. If you’re just starting out, I suggest going with the basic set first to get the hang of the game.

Setting Up the Game

First things first, shuffle all 16 cards and place them face down in the middle. That pile is your deck, my friend.

Now, deal one card face down to each player from the deck. Oh, and don’t forget to place one other card next to the deck. We call that special spot the “ruins”.

Here’s the deal. In this game, everything is a secret. You can only look at the card in your hand and you have no clue about what’s in the ruins or the other players’ hands. It’s all about keeping that information hidden.

So, here’s what you need to do to decide who goes first in this game. You can choose any method you want – it could be something fun like rock-paper-scissors, or maybe the person with the most epic family history gets the honor. Once you’ve settled that, you’re ready to begin.

Playing the Game

The game is played by each player taking turns in a clockwise direction around the table. This continues until there are no more cards left in the deck.

A Turn

Now, let’s talk about what happens during a player’s turn:

1. First, draw the top card from the deck. This card will be added to your hand.
2. After drawing the card, you will now have 2 cards in your hand.

Playing the Game: To play, simply choose one of the two cards and place it face up in front of yourself.

Effect: When a card is played, its effect takes place as much as possible. Once the card’s effect has occurred, the card is considered discarded.

If, at step 4), the deck is empty, the game moves on to the investigation phase.

• During a turn, it’s possible for players to be removed from the game. If this happens, the turn ends and passes to the player on the left.
• If the removed player had a card in their hand, it is placed face-up in front of them as a discard. However, if they had the Lost Legacy card, it is shuffled back into the deck.
• If all players except one are removed before the investigation phase, then the remaining player becomes the winner.

Investigation Phase

When all the cards in the deck are used up, it’s time for the Investigation phase to begin. During this phase, we need to figure out the order in which players will investigate, and we do so based on the speed of their cards. The player with the card of the lowest speed goes first.

We can’t show our cards to each other, so to determine the order, we simply ask, “Anyone have any 1s? No? How about 2s?” and so on.

But wait: If two or more players have cards with the same investigation speed, none of them can investigate. And remember, an X card doesn’t count as a number, so the player with the X card also can’t investigate.

How to Investigate: A Guide

Investigating is a key aspect of the game. It’s all about taking a closer look at a card of your choosing. You have two options:

• Inspecting another player’s card (even your own!)
• Examining a card in the ruins

When you investigate, reveal the chosen card to everyone at the table. If it turns out to be the Lost Legacy, congratulations! The game is yours. But if it’s not, the next player with the highest investigation speed takes their turn.

• Here’s an interesting twist: If you happen to have the Lost Legacy card in your hand during investigation, you can investigate yourself and win the game immediately!
• However, if none of the players find the Lost Legacy during investigation, everyone loses. It’s a shared disappointment.

Some Tips for Girl of Fate and Sneak Attack

Neither Girl of Fate nor Sneak Attack activate their effects when you play them.

Their effects kick in when another player plays a card that says “Look at any one other player’s hand” against a player who has either Girl of Fate or Sneak Attack in their hand.

Swordsman can take a peek at another player’s hand, but it cancels out the effect of those cards.

Tips for Playing Saint

So, here’s the thing. The card doesn’t do anything when you play it. Yeah, I know, kind of a bummer, right? But wait, there’s more! The card actually has a secret, sneaky effect that only triggers if it’s in your discard pile and you’ve been knocked out of the game. Sneaky, right?
