Earn points by correctly guessing translations and when others vote for your created translations. The player with the most points at the end of 10 rounds wins the game. Before starting, make sure the box of cards is easily accessible to all players. Decide on one player to be the Scorekeeper and give them the Score Pad. Give each player a pencil and an Answer Pad sheet. Remember to write your name on your answer sheet, which has 10 rounds per game since it’s double-sided.

The Types of Cards

When you play this game, you’ll come across three different types of cards, and each one requires a unique answer from you.

Picture Cards:

Hey there! Take a look at these awesome pictures. They show real signs, packages, menus, and more. But there’s a twist – some of the words are hidden behind question marks. It’s up to you to fill in the blanks with the best or funniest suggestion you can think of!

Guess the Movie Titles:

Imagine this: You’re playing a game where you get a movie title in English, but the country it’s from didn’t use a direct translation. Your task is to come up with the funniest version of what that country used for the title when translated back into English. It’s all about finding the humor in these creative translations!

Hey there! I’ve got a fun game for you to play. It’s called Idiom Guessing, and it’s all about understanding phrases from different languages. Let me explain how it works.

How to Play

First, you need to choose someone to be the Editor. It could be the person who knows the most languages, or you can take turns being the Editor.

The Editor will draw a card and read the phrase on the front out loud. But here’s the trick – they won’t reveal the official translation on the back of the card. You have to guess what the phrase actually means!

When it comes to Picture Cards, the first thing you should do is place the card face up on the table where everyone can see it. This is an important step to make sure that everyone has a fair chance to see and interpret the image. Additionally, it’s a good idea to have a variety of Picture Cards to choose from, as this will make the game more exciting and challenging.

Now, here’s where the fun begins! Take turns interpreting the image on the Picture Card. You can use your imagination and creativity to come up with your own story or meaning behind the image. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer – it’s all about what you see and feel when you look at the picture.

If you’re feeling stuck or need some inspiration, you can always ask the other players for their thoughts on the image. This can lead to interesting discussions and different perspectives. It’s amazing how a single image can evoke different emotions and interpretations from each person.

By following these simple steps, you can have a great time playing with Picture Cards. Remember, the key is to have fun and let your imagination run wild. So gather your friends or family, lay out those Picture Cards, and let the storytelling begin!

When we play this game, we use our answer sheets to come up with funny, clever, or accurate translations.

While the others are busy creating their witty replies, I have to write down the official translation on my answer sheet.

I do this so that if someone sees me reading an answer off a card instead of the answer sheet, they won’t know which one is the official translation.

Once everyone has had a chance to come up with their answers, they give their answer sheets to me.

Then I read all the replies out loud. It’s important to read them all with the same authority, as if any of them could be the official translation.

Have you ever stumbled over words you didn’t understand? It happens to all of us sometimes. But did you know that during a game, when you don’t know a word, it can actually give the other players a clue about which answers the Editor did not write? So, if you’re struggling with a response, it’s best to ask the player to step aside for a conference, rather than revealing your confusion to everyone.

Here’s an important tip: If two players come up with very similar answers, the Editor should only read one of them. Any votes received for that answer should be evenly split between the two players, resulting in half points. This way, we can ensure fairness and avoid any ambiguity.

Another thing to remember: If you happen to know the official translation, don’t just blurt it out! Instead, write it down. In the event that a player guesses the same as the official translation, the Editor will announce the player who knew the translation and award them 3 points. It adds a bit of excitement to the game and rewards those who have a good command of the language.

However, it’s important to note that even if a player knows the translation, their answer is not read aloud and they do not get to participate in guessing. So, everyone still has a chance to show off their language skills.

After listening to all the responses, I get to play the guessing game. One by one, we take turns guessing which answer is the official translation. We start with the player to the left of me. You can even vote for your own translation, but no points for that, my friend!

As each player makes their choice, I’ll note down who voted for what on everyone’s answer sheets. I’ll write down the initials of each player next to the answers they picked.

Once everyone has cast their votes, I’ll reveal which answer is the official translation. And just for fun, I’ll also choose my favorite answer—usually the one that brings the most laughter!

So here’s how the game works: I’m the Editor, and I work with the Scorekeeper to keep track of everyone’s scores. After each round, we give the answer sheets back to the players, and then the role of the Editor moves around the table, going clockwise.

Scoring

• You get +1 point for each vote your translation gets.
• If you guess the official translation, you get +2 points.
• If you write an answer that’s exactly (or almost exactly) the same as the official translation, you get +3 points.
• If nobody guesses the official translation, the Editor gets +2 points, and +1 point for their personal choice.

Now, here’s an important thing to remember: As the game goes on, it might happen that some players get to be the Editor more times than others. And guess what? That’s a small disadvantage. But don’t worry – to make things fair, anyone who acts as the Editor one more round than the others gets a bonus of 2 points added to their final score.

Something Extra for 4 Player Games

If you want even more options to choose from, you can try this optional rule for 4 player games. The person acting as the Editor gets to create an answer and keep track of the official translation.

Before the game starts, just add an extra answer sheet labeled “The Editor.” This is where the translations from the back of the cards will be written down.

The Editor role moves around the table, and they still can’t vote in a 4 player game. They’re just there to keep things interesting!
