Game Elements
Let me give you a quick rundown of what you can expect in terms of game elements:
When you start playing, you’ll need two important books: the rulebook and the character creation book. These books will help you set up the game and create your character. If you have any questions about the game rules while playing, you can refer to the rulebook.
As you play the game, you will come across six quest books and one village book. These books contain all the stories and adventures you will experience during the game. However, it’s important not to read from these books unless you are instructed to do so.
When you read an entry in one of the quest or village books, try your best not to read other entries on the same page unless you are told to do so. Following this rule will ensure that you have the best experience while playing the game. At the end of the setup, you will be instructed to start reading from the “To New Roads” quest book.
When you start your adventure, you’ll need to read Celyse’s letter. Take your time and feel free to go back and read it whenever you want.
Dragonholt is where your adventure takes place. It’s a quiet little farming village. Once you arrive, you’ll get a map of the village.
Later on, you might come across Sonia’s journal during your adventures. Don’t look at it until you’re told to. It could have important information that helps you solve a mystery, fix a problem, or complete a mission.
When I’m playing the game, I need to keep the twenty item cards in a deck with the front face down. It’s important that I don’t look at the front face of any card until I’m told to take that card. Each card has a unique identifier on the back, like “A” or “B”.
If there are other people playing with me, we need to use activation tokens to keep track of which players have made decisions.
The six empty character sheets are there for you to fill in with information about your character when you’re creating them.
The Goal of the Game
Legacy of Dragonholt is a cooperative game. That means if you’re playing with others, you’re all on the same team. But in this game, winning or losing isn’t the focus.
Legacy of Dragonholt is all about storytelling. As you play, the choices you make will create a narrative that tells the story of your adventures in the village of Dragonholt.
You get to be the hero, a brave adventurer who is after fame and fortune. You can do good deeds and show honor, or you can battle monsters and save villagers.
When I play Legacy of Dragonholt, I get to be part of an ongoing story that’s all about my adventures. One story might end, but that just means another one can start. The game only ends when the story naturally comes to a close. And what that ending is depends entirely on the decisions I make along the way.
Legacy of Dragonholt isn’t like other games where you either win or lose. It’s not that simple. The choices I make have big consequences that can change how the story turns out. Maybe I don’t find a legendary treasure or save an innocent person, but if I have fun and enjoy the story, that’s a win in my book.
Getting Started
To start a new game, just follow these steps:
Create Your Hero(es)
Prepare the Story Tracking Sheet
In the story tracking sheet, you’ll find a place to keep track of important information. At the beginning of the game, you’ll have 100 gold. This gold can be used to buy things and pay for training during your adventures. If you’re playing with more than one hero, the gold is shared among all of them. You’ll also start with two fame. As you become more well known or your efforts are recognized by important people, your fame will increase. Just like gold, fame is shared by all heroes. For now, keep all story points unmarked. As you go on your adventures, you’ll mark the story points to remember the choices you’ve made.
Let’s Begin The First Quest
Here’s a List of Rules
I want to share with you a comprehensive glossary of rules and terminology for Legacy of Dragonholt. This will help you understand the game and navigate through it more easily. The glossary is organized alphabetically by topic, making it convenient to find what you need.
First, let’s talk about the purpose of this glossary. It is not designed to teach you how to play the game. The “To New Roads” quest book contains helpful rules sidebars that serve that purpose. Instead, this glossary is meant to be a reference tool. Whenever you have a question or need clarification during the game, you can turn to this glossary for answers.
In terms of reliability, this rules glossary is the ultimate authority. If there is any discrepancy between this glossary and the rules sidebars in the “To New Roads” quest book or the character creation book, this glossary should be followed.
Now, let’s discuss the concept of Activation Tokens. These tokens play a crucial role in the game. They are used to activate cards, which allows you to take certain actions. Each card will specify how many Activation Tokens are needed to use it. Once you have enough tokens, you can use the card according to its instructions.
Remember, the Activation Tokens are a valuable resource, so manage them wisely. They can greatly impact your strategy and the outcome of the game. So make sure to keep an eye on your token count and plan your actions accordingly.
Understanding the rules and terminology of Legacy of Dragonholt is essential for a successful gaming experience. By familiarizing yourself with this glossary and referring to it whenever you need clarity, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the world of Dragonholt and make the most out of your gaming sessions.
Have you ever heard of activation tokens? They’re pretty cool! Activation tokens are these handy little things that help track which players have made decisions. They’re used when you’re playing a game with two or more people. Each player gets their own activation token.
- When it’s your turn to make a decision, you use up your activation token by turning it over. And here’s the catch: you can’t make another decision until your activation token is refreshed.
- Once all players have used up their activation tokens, everyone gets to refresh them by turning them face-up again.
Active Player
The active player is the one who made the most recent decision. That’s right, it’s all about timing!
Now, when you see the word “you” in an effect (that’s the text that comes after an arrow), it’s talking directly to you – the active player. But when you see “you each,” it means each hero individually. Pretty neat, huh?
Conditional Effects
Let’s talk about effects that only happen under certain conditions. These conditions are called conditional statements, and they tell us what needs to happen for the effects to take place.
Here are a few things you should know about conditional statements:
- If there are multiple conditional statements, and the requirements for more than one condition are met, only the effects of the first conditional statement will happen.
- There might be an “otherwise” statement that tells us what happens if none of the previous conditions are met.
- Conditional effects are not decisions. You don’t have to choose anything, and they don’t use up your activation token.
Days
In the “Dragonholt Village” book, I have the pleasure of experiencing various encounters that span multiple days. These days are conveniently tracked on a tracking sheet located on the back cover of the book.
As each day comes to a close, the tracking sheet presents an effect that guides my next step in the story. It acts as a bridge, connecting the previous day to the new one.
It’s worth noting that I can only benefit from each tracking sheet entry once per day. So, I need to carefully choose when to engage with each entry.
Choices to Make
Throughout my adventures, I am faced with numerous decisions. These choices shape both my reactions to situations and my overall actions. Don’t worry – the options are easy to spot since they are displayed in white text against a dark-red background, like the example below.
When I reach a decision point, where there are two or more options available to me, I am presented with each option. By carefully reading through the available choices, I get to decide which one best aligns with my desires and preferences.
- Knock on the door -> Read entry 2979.
Hey there! Today, I want to talk about something really fascinating – interactive stories! Have you ever read a book where you get to make choices and shape the story as you go along? It’s like stepping into a different world where you have the power to change what happens next. How cool is that?
I’m going to show you how it works. In this type of story, you’ll come across different options at certain points. These options will have consequences that lead you on different paths. Let’s take a look at an example:
- Knock on the door -> Read entry 2979
- Break down the door -> Mark story point N5, Read entry 7363
When you see these options, you get to decide what the main character does. If you choose “Knock on the door,” you’ll turn to entry 2979 to find out what happens next. But if you’re feeling more adventurous and choose “Break down the door,” you’ll need to mark story point N5 and then turn to entry 7363. Exciting, right?
Here’s another thing to keep in mind. Sometimes, certain options have requirements. This means you can only choose them if you meet specific conditions, like having a particular skill. For example:
- Pick the lock and sneak inside -> Requires thievery (skill), Read entry 7267
In the above situation, you need to have the thievery skill to choose the option “Pick the lock and sneak inside”. Otherwise, it won’t be available to you.
Effect
An effect is a chunk of the story that gets recorded on a tracking sheet or character sheet. Each effect is shown by a chunk of italic text that comes after an arrow.
When an effect says “you,” it’s talking about you, the player. And when it says “you each,” it means every hero individually.
Encounter
The “Dragonholt Village” book is made up of different encounters. Each encounter is a short group of connected entries. Once you start an encounter, keep reading like normal until you finish the whole thing.
Entry
An entry is a small piece of the story that usually talks about one thing that happened or one decision you have to make.
Every entry in this guide is numbered for easy reference. Look out for effects, shown in italic text with an arrow. These effects may lead you to another entry or complete a quest or encounter. Some effects only happen if certain conditions are met. These conditions are stated in italic text, starting with “if”. If none of the conditions are met, an “otherwise” statement will tell you what happens instead.
Now, let’s talk about experience.
When I go on a quest or experience something scary, it can have an effect on me. Sometimes, that effect is gaining experience. Experience is like a way of measuring what I’ve learned during my adventures.
- Whenever I gain experience, I make sure to write down how much I’ve earned on my character sheet.
- In the “Dragonholt Village” game, there are special things called effects that let me spend my experience to learn new skills. But I can only do this if I’ve made enough progress in my training.
Getting Famous
As I go on more adventures and complete quests, something else can happen – I can become famous! Fame is like a way of measuring how well known I am to the public and how much they like me as a hero. Having a high fame means that people really know who I am and think I’m great.
- I keep a record of my fame on the story tracking sheet.
Introduction
Hi there! I’m here to tell you all about the exciting world of Dragonholt. In this magical world, fame, gold, heroism, and items play a vital role. Let’s dive in and explore what each of these elements means for your adventure.
Fame
Fame is like a shining star that everyone can see. As you embark on your journey, you’ll gain fame for your heroic deeds. You can think of fame as a special kind of progress that shows the world how amazing you are.
- Fame is recorded on the story tracking sheet.
- All players share the fame they earn.
Gold
Gold is an essential currency in Dragonholt that you’ll come across during your adventures. It can be used to buy valuable items and even pay for training. So, keep an eye out for opportunities to collect gold!
- Your gold amount is kept track of on the story tracking sheet.
- Just like fame, gold is shared among all players. It’s a team effort!
Heroism
Heroism represents your incredible feats in Dragonholt and the surrounding areas. It’s a specific type of progress that shows the world how heroic you are becoming. You can think of it like a badge of honor.
When you reach certain heroism milestones, amazing things happen! You’ll gain experience, earn more fame, and even increase your maximum stamina. It’s all recorded on the “Dragonholt Village” tracking sheet.
Items
Now, let’s talk about items! Throughout your adventure, you’ll come across mystical items that can aid you on your journey. These items are special cards that you keep in a hidden deck.
- Whenever I come across an effect that tells me to get an item, I make sure to jot down the name of that item on my character sheet. Then, I search for the specific item card and keep it face up alongside my character sheet. When I’m looking for the card, I only look at the backs of the cards so I can find the one I need.
- If I want to, I can give some of my items to another hero whenever I feel like it. But there’s a catch – I can only do this if my activation token isn’t used up. Thankfully, giving items to someone doesn’t use up my activation token, so I can keep on playing!
- There are certain items, like potions, that I can have more than one of. But keep in mind that there’s only one copy of each item card. We all share it as a reference, so we can make sure we’re on the same page.
- If I happen to lose an item, I simply remove it from my character sheet. And if no one else has more of that same item, I return the item card to the deck. It’s important to keep things fair and balanced!
Location: A Place in Dragonholt
A location is simply a physical place within the village of Dragonholt.
- Every location in Dragonholt is assigned a unique four-digit number that corresponds to an entry in the “Dragonholt Village” book.
- As you read through the “Dragonholt Village” book, you’ll come across different encounters. After each encounter, you can use the map of Dragonholt to choose a new location to visit.
Map of Dragonholt: Find Your Way
So, after I finish reading each new part of the “Dragonholt Village” book, I can take a look at the map and pick a new place to explore! It’s really exciting to see all the different locations I can visit.
- Whenever I want to explore a location in the “Dragonholt Village” book, I look for a four-digit number that corresponds to that location. Once I find it, I read the entry for that location to discover what awaits me.
- If I’m already engrossed in another quest or encounter, I can’t choose a new location. I have to finish what I’m currently doing first.
Playing with Friends
If I’m playing alone, I’m in charge of making all the decisions. But if I’m playing with friends, we take turns making decisions. These rules only apply when there are two or more players.
- Each player has an activation token. It helps us keep track of whose turn it is to make decisions.
- Whenever we reach a point where we have to make a decision, we decide as a group who will be the one to make it.
When I want to make a decision, I have to use my activation token by turning it facedown. This means that I can’t make any more decisions until my activation token is refreshed. It’s important to remember that all players have to exhaust their activation tokens before they can refresh them by turning them faceup again.
Being the active player means that I have made a decision and I am in control. I will remain the active player until another player makes a decision. It’s like being the leader of the game for a little while.
In the game of Dragonholt Village, these rules are followed. It’s a fun and exciting game that requires strategic thinking and teamwork. If you enjoy making decisions and being in control, then you’ll love this game. Just make sure to keep these rules in mind and have fun playing!
The rules I just mentioned need to be followed when reading any of the quest books. These rules also apply to the “Dragonholt Village” book, but there are a few differences:
– In this book, each of us takes turns choosing a location to visit. We decide together who gets to choose.
– When you choose a location, use up your activation token by turning it facedown. You can’t choose another location until your token is refreshed.
– When you choose a location, you become the active player and you stay active until you finish the corresponding encounter.
– During an encounter, we should make decisions as a group. Making a decision doesn’t use up your activation token, and any of us can fulfill the requirements for options.
Now, let’s move on to something else. I want to talk about potions.
Hey there! Did you know that you can drink a potion anytime you want? It’s pretty awesome! When you drink a potion, you get all the cool benefits that are listed on the potion item card.
- If you’re playing with two or more heroes, you can drink a potion as long as your activation token isn’t already used up. Drinking a potion won’t exhaust your activation token, so you can keep on doing your thing!
- Now, here’s the important part: you need to have at least one potion of a certain type written down on your character sheet in order to drink that type of potion. Makes sense, right?
- Whenever you drink a potion, just remember to decrease the number of that potion type you have written down on your character sheet by one. It’s like a friendly reminder to keep track of your stash!
Progress
Let’s talk about progress, shall we? Progress is a way for us to keep track of the awesome things we’re doing. It’s like a record of the little steps we take towards achieving big goals. We can write it down on the “Dragonholt Village” tracking sheet or on the tracking sheet for the quest we’re currently on.
- When you are told to make progress, find the type of progress on the tracking sheet for the current quest and mark the corresponding number of boxes.
- Progress is mentioned throughout your journeys.
Skills: Unleashing Your Inner Talent
I want to talk to you about something important: skills. They’re like the secret superpowers we all possess. But what exactly are skills? Let me break it down for you:
Skills are the things you’re really good at, the things you’ve trained for. Think of them as your hidden talents, waiting to be discovered. Skills give you an edge in life, making it easier to do certain tasks and helping you succeed.
When Skills Take a Break
Sometimes, our energy runs out. We get tired, and that can make our skills take a break. But it’s not all bad news. We can choose one skill to rest, and in return, we get a burst of energy back. Here’s what happens:
- When a skill is resting, it’s like you don’t have it anymore. So you have to figure out another way to get things done.
- But don’t worry! When you’re ready, you can recover a skill. Just pick a resting skill, and poof! It’s back. You’re back in action.
Unlocking New Skills
As you continue on your journey, you’ll acquire experience points that you can use to learn new abilities.
There are a few effects on the “Dragonholt Village” tracker that let you spend experience points to learn new skills, but only if you’ve made enough progress in your training.
Stamina
Stamina measures how much you can push yourself or endure strain or damage. Doing too much physical work, being exposed to harsh conditions for a long time, or getting hurt in combat will all reduce your stamina.
- You determine your maximum stamina when creating your character.
- Whenever you lose stamina, subtract that amount from your current stamina. Keep track of your current stamina separately from your maximum stamina.
Whenever I regain stamina, my current stamina increases by the amount specified by the effect that causes the stamina recovery. I should keep in mind that my current stamina cannot exceed my maximum stamina, and it also can’t drop below zero. If my current stamina would be reduced below zero, it simply goes down to zero instead.
When my current stamina reaches zero, I have to choose one of my skills to disable. This means I won’t be able to use that skill until further notice. However, I do regain one stamina point as compensation.
While a skill is disabled, it’s as if I never had that skill in the first place. But if I come across an effect that allows me to recover a skill, I can choose one of my disabled skills and it will become enabled again.
Let’s not forget about Story Points. They play a crucial role in our adventures.
Let me tell you about story points. They’re like little markers that keep track of all the choices I make during my adventures. These choices shape the story and determine how it unfolds. And you know what? Every decision I make gets logged onto a special tracking sheet, so I can keep track of my progress.
- When you’re told to mark one or more story points, find the story point on the story tracking sheet using its letter and number, then mark that box.
- Story points are mentioned in your adventures.
- Each story point is either marked or not marked. Marking a story point more than once doesn’t do anything extra.
Time
Each unit of time represents a vague amount of time, which could be a little or a lot, depending on the current quest. It’s used to keep track of how long your actions take. Time is recorded on the tracking sheet for the current quest.
- Time is mentioned in your adventures.
- When one or more units of time have passed, mark that many time boxes on the tracking sheet for the current quest.
