When we play the game, the person with the longest tongue gets to go first. So, if that’s me, I’ll start by placing a number 1 card from my hand face up next to the draw pile.

This card will be the beginning of the play pile. The next player has to play a 2 card or a special card called the King Toad card (I’ll explain what that does in a bit). And this pattern keeps going – the next player will play a 3 card, and then a 4 card. After the 4 card, we start over again, with the next player playing a number 1 card, and so on.

But here’s the thing – if you don’t have either the next number card in sequence or a King Toad card, you have to draw a card from the draw pile. You can play it right away if it’s the right number (or a King Toad card). But if it’s not, you have to keep it in your hand and the turn passes to the left.

If you don’t have the next number card in sequence or you don’t want to play it, you can play a King Toad card instead.

Put the card on top of the play pile and say, “King Toad!” Now you’re King Toad and you get to decide which number card should be played next. To get everyone’s attention, start by saying, “Ribbit!”

Then, stick out your tongue one to four times to show the number card you want to be played next. The other players should count out loud each time you stick out your tongue. (Make sure you stick out your tongue clearly so they can count).

To let everyone know you’re done, say, “Ribbit!” again. At that moment, all the players (except you) try to be the first to play the matching number card from their hands on top of the play pile. (Everyone else has to take back their cards).

When it’s your turn to play a card, I want you to pay attention to the player on your left. If they played a card successfully, you have to play a card as well. But, if no one can play a card, you’re in luck! You get an extra turn, and you can choose any number card from your hand to play.

This is where it gets interesting. Once you’ve played your card, it’s time for everyone else to get involved. Let’s say you’re the proud King Toad, and you want a 3 card to be played next. You start by saying “Ribbit,” and then you stick out your tongue three times while saying “Ribbit” again. As you do this, all the other players should count together out loud, saying “1, 2, 3.”

Now, the race is on! Everyone (except you) will try to be the first player to play a 3 card on top of the pile. The player who succeeds in playing the 3 card gets to take the next turn. And just like that, the game keeps going in a clockwise direction, with each player taking their turn when it’s their chance.

Ending a Round

When I run out of cards, I win the round and get a King Toad-ken. To start a new round, we gather all the cards, shuffle them, and deal them again.

Note: I can’t play a King Toad as my last card.

End of the Game

To win the game, I need to collect three King Toad-kens. We keep playing rounds as described above until someone earns three King Toad-kens.
