- When you open the box, you’ll find:
- 1 game board
- 120 tiles
- 1 bag
- 4 racks
- 4 score boards
- 24 color pegs
- a rulebook
Getting Ready
- First, let’s start by setting up the board.
- Next, we need to shuffle the tiles and place them in the bag.
- Now, it’s time to get our score boards and pegs ready. Each player should have their own score board and place one peg of each color in the hole next to the corresponding color symbol, starting at 0 points.
- Finally, we each need to grab our rack, which goes in front of our score board. Draw 6 tiles from the bag and place them on your rack, making sure to keep them hidden from your opponents.
The Game Board
When playing with two players, only use the white spaces on the board. When playing with three players, also include the light grey spaces. And finally, when playing with four players, utilize the entire board.
Objective of the Game
Every player has six tiles on their rack, each with different colored symbols. The goal is to strategically place these tiles on the board in order to create lines of matching symbols.
By doing so, you can advance the corresponding color markers on your score board. The ultimate objective is to advance all six color markers, leaving none behind. When the board is completely filled, the player with the lowest positioned marker wins the game.
How to Play
The youngest player takes the first turn, and then the game progresses in a clockwise direction. On your turn, follow these steps:
1. Play One Tile
Select one tile from your rack and strategically place it on the board. Consider the symbols on the tile and how they align with the existing tiles on the board.
2. Score Your Tile
After placing your tile, adjust the corresponding color marker on your score board based on the symbol alignment. Make sure to keep track of the advancement of each color marker.
When you start playing, you want to focus on one of the two symbols on the tile you played. Take a look at the five lines coming out from this symbol, like the example below shows you.
When I play Ingenious, I have to keep track of the symbols on the board or on other tiles. I count the number of identical symbols in each line. But I stop counting as soon as I come across an empty space or a different symbol. I don’t count the symbol on the tile I just played. The total count becomes my score for that symbol, and I advance my respective color counter on my score board. Then, I repeat this process for the second symbol on the tile I played.
To refresh my hand, I start by swapping my
Bonus Play!
I need to remember that my counters cannot go beyond the final spaces on the score board, which have a value of 18. If any of my counters reaches the final space, I shout “Ingenious” and get an instant bonus play of one tile.
Hey there! Are you ready for a refreshing game of tiles? Let me walk you through some important steps to keep in mind.
Before refreshing, pick another tile from your rack and place it on the board. Don’t forget to score it! Once you’ve finished all your bonus plays, go ahead and refresh your rack to get 6 new tiles.
End of the Game
The game comes to an end when there are no more tiles that can be played. At that point, it’s time to determine each player’s score. To do this, find the lowest color position for each player. The color at this position is their score. The player with the highest score is the winner. In case there’s a tie, use the next lowest color as a tiebreaker, and keep going until there’s a clear winner.
In a super rare scenario where one player manages to advance all 6 counters to the end of their score board, they win instantly. Talk about impressive!
I won with a score of 10. You came in 2nd with 9. You also have a score of 9, but your tiebreakers 12 and 13 are not as good as mine, which are 12 and 14.
