If you’re feeling creative and up for some lively debate, then let’s follow the regular rules. It’s a double-edged sword of creativity and excitement!

However, if you prefer a more guided and narrative-driven experience, then the alternate game play is for you. It’s less open to interpretation and works great, especially if there are only two players.

What’s Included?

• There are 320 cards in the game, each one featuring a different noun.
• You will also find a set of instructions to guide you through the game.

What’s the Goal?

The objective of the game is to win as many rows of cards as possible. This is done by strategically playing the noun that is considered the “largest” in a constantly changing sequence of cards.

Setting Up the Game

First, take the card holder out of the box and put it where everyone can reach it. Then, choose someone to be the dealer. The dealer will give each player five cards, but make sure to keep them hidden from everyone else.

Next, put four more cards face up in the middle of the playing area. Arrange them in a plus shape, with the arrows on the cards pointing outward from the center.

Let’s Play!

I’m ready to get this game started! To begin, the person sitting on the left side of the dealer will take the first turn. Then, we’ll proceed in a clockwise direction, each of us taking our own turn.

When it’s your turn, you’ll choose one noun card from your hand and place it face up on one of the four rows. You have two options: either the card you choose must fit inside one of the cards already in play, or it must be larger than the outermost card.

Remember, the arrow on each card shows which direction is larger. Keep that in mind when making your move.

When you have a noun on your card that is bigger than one of the outer cards, you should put it in a way that it overlaps the card that is furthest away from the center.

So here’s the deal: if the noun on your card is smaller than one of the outer cards, you just gotta slip it right under the card that’s closest to the center. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Don’t forget, you can only play a card if it’s the largest or the smallest in the row. You can’t put it between two cards.

Let your imagination run wild!

Use your creativity and make sure to announce your play as you go. For example, say “There are Thoughts in the Head”.

If you can’t play a card or you choose not to, you have the option to exchange up to three cards and skip a turn.

Take the card(s) you don’t want and put them at the bottom of one of the face-down decks. Then, draw the same number of cards from any deck and add them to your hand. This ends your turn, and it’s the next person’s turn.

At the end of each turn, draw from the deck so you always have five cards in your hand.

Tips for Playing

• When you play a card, it only has to relate to the card it’s directly touching, not the whole row. (See alternate game play for a different way to do this).
• You can add a modifier like “a”, “an”, “the”, or “my” when you play your card. But you can’t add extra nouns to make it fit.
• Sometimes a fit might be more about ideas than logic. Like, it’s unlikely but a Kangaroo could fit in a Library. Or, if you take it literally, the Universe could fit in a Dictionary (because it’s a word).

Challenges

As I said before, you should think creatively and play cards that might not “fit” in an obvious way. But other players might challenge you if they don’t agree with the logic of your fit.

If another player challenges you, you have a chance to defend your card by stating your case. For instance, you could say, “Yes, you can absolutely fit a turkey in a purse. I mean, just imagine a purse stuffed with slices of turkey.”

Give it a moment for some friendly debate (remember, we’re not in court here!), and then everyone, except for the person who was challenged, gets to vote. We use thumbs up if we agree (“okay”) and thumbs down if we disagree (“no way”).

The Power of Majority!

When we play the game, we all have a say. If more of us agree that your card fits, it stays where it is, and the game just keeps going. But if you can’t convince us, you lose your turn, and we move on without you.

If you lose the challenge, your card gets taken away and placed at the bottom of the draw pile. Don’t worry, though! You can still get back in the game by drawing a new card from the deck. Just remember, if there’s a tie in the voting, and the number of voters is even, we’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and let your card stay.

Pickle Rounds and Winning a Row of Cards

When you play the fourth card in a row, something exciting happens – a Pickle Round begins! Now, everyone wants to win that row of cards, including me, you, and every other player. It’s a real competition! But here’s the catch: in this round, you can only play a card that is bigger than the one furthest from the center. So, it’s all about finding the right card to beat the others.

The game starts with the player to your left, and then it goes around to each player in order. Each person gets one chance to show off their card-playing skills. You can either play a card that is larger than the biggest one in the row or choose to pass if you don’t have a matching card or simply don’t want to play one. Just say “pass,” and the turn goes to the next player on your left.

At the end of the round, I get one last chance to beat the last card played.

If I play the biggest card, I win the round. I take the row of cards and put them face down in front of me. Then I draw a new card from the deck and place it face up to start a new row.

(There should always be four rows in the game). Everyone gets five cards back, and we keep playing to the left of the person who started the Pickle Round until someone puts the fourth card in a new row.

Notes for the Pickle Round

During a Pickle Round, you can only play cards that are bigger than the biggest card in the row.

• Once the Pickle Round starts, we can only play cards to the row we’re playing in. We can’t play cards to other rows.

During a Pickle Round, any card that is played can be challenged by another player, just like in regular play. It’s a way to keep things interesting and add an extra layer of excitement. But remember, you can’t replenish your hand until the round is over. This rule applies to all players, including the person who started the Pickle Round. So, you’ll need to strategize and make the most of the cards you have.

When it comes to winning the game, the goal is to collect a certain number of rows of cards. The required number of rows depends on the number of players:

– If there are two players, you’ll need to collect five rows.

– For three or four players, the goal is to collect four rows.

– And if there are five or six players, you’ll need to collect three rows.

Keep in mind that there’s an alternate way to play the game as well. In this variation, every card you play must relate to all the other cards in the row, not just the one it touches. Essentially, each row should tell a “story” of sorts. It adds an extra challenge and makes the game even more engaging. Just be sure to announce the whole row to the group each time you play a card.
