Okay, so here’s the deal. First, make a list of stuff in a certain category. Got that? Good. Now, roll the HIT or MISS die. If you get a HIT, you score points for picking something on your list that you think other people also wrote.

If you roll a MISS, you get points for choosing something that you think only you wrote. Easy enough, right? The player with the most points wins the game.

Setting Up

Each player gets a pad of paper, a pencil, and a HIT or MISS card. Put the categories card box, the die, and the timer in the middle of the playing area. Choose one player to be the scorekeeper and write everyone’s names on the left side of the score pad.

Playing the Game

Hit or Miss comes in rounds equal to the number of players.

A new person becomes the Leader for every turn. The Leader takes a card from the categories box and reads it out loud to everyone. Then, someone starts the sand timer.

Once the timer starts, all of us have to quickly write down as many things as we can think of that fit into that category. We have to stop writing as soon as the timer runs out.

Now, let’s talk about how we score each round. The Leader goes first, and then we move to the person on their left. Each player takes a turn rolling the HIT or MISS die, and there are three possible outcomes:

1. If the die lands on HIT, you score points for every item on your list that matches an item on the Leader’s list.

2. If the die lands on MISS, you don’t score any points.

3. If the die lands on HIT and MISS, you only score points for items that no one else has on their list.

Note: In a game with 3 or 4 players, each person gets two turns.

If you guess a popular item on your list during the game, mark it with a circle. Then read it out loud to everyone playing. They will show either a HIT or a MISS card in response. If they have the same item on their list, they will show a HIT card. If they don’t, they will show a MISS card. Score 1 point for each HIT card shown. Write the total next to the circled item. If you have a HIT card, circle the item and also score 1 point.

If you roll a MISS, let’s say you choose an item from your list that you think nobody else wrote down. Then, I want you to read it out loud to the rest of us. Our job is to respond by showing our cards – either HIT or MISS. If any of us have a HIT card and it matches your item, we’ll put it face up in front of us. But if we don’t have a match, we’ll put our MISS card face up. Now, for every MISS card that’s showing, you’ll score a point. Make sure to write down your total next to the item you picked. Now, here’s the twist – if any player has a HIT card showing, they’ll earn 3 points for getting a hit on a miss!

When you roll the jester, you get to pick whether to read a HIT or a MISS from your list. Let everyone know if it’s a “HIT” or a “MISS,” and then follow the instructions based on your choice. Once everyone has taken their turn, add up your scores for the round and tell the scorekeeper. The next round starts with the player to the left of the Leader becoming the new Leader. Keep playing like this.

A Few Tips

• Only read something from your list if nobody else has read it yet.

Before you start playing, it’s a good idea for everyone to decide how strict you want to be about what counts as a match. Are synonyms okay?

If you think an item doesn’t belong in the category, let’s all discuss whether or not it’s valid.

What happens at the end of the game?

The game finishes once every player has had a turn as the Leader. The player with the most points wins.

Remember: In a game with 3 or 4 players, the game ends after each player has been the Leader twice.
