But here’s the catch: they aren’t the only ones in on the secrets. Other barons also have access to inside information, creating a dynamic game of strategy and intuition. They must carefully analyze the investments of their rivals, while also considering their own knowledge, in order to outsmart and outmaneuver their opponents at every turn.

However, it’s not simply about accumulating personal riches. These barons also have a reputation to uphold. To gain respect and admiration from their peers, they must demonstrate their generosity by donating a significant portion of their hard-earned wealth to charity. The baron who is selfish and fails to contribute enough will find themselves disqualified from the race to become the top baron, regardless of their personal fortune.

Let’s Get Set Up!

1. First things first, place the Game Board in the center of the table.
2. Take the Price Markers and put them on the “40” space of each commodity track.
3. Time to get the commodities set up! The commodities in this game are Coal (black), Wheat (yellow), Coffee (red), Rubber (brown), Tea (green), and Salt (white).
4. Next, set up the Card Holders. Make sure you have enough holders for each player.
5. Place the holders between each player, so everyone can see the cards in the holders to their left and right.

Now, let’s dive into how the game works. The game board consists of various sectors, each with different types of resources. It’s your job to explore these sectors to gather as many resources as possible. But be careful, because your opponents are trying to do the same thing!

To start the game, each player places their explorer token in one of the sectors. These tokens represent your presence in the sector and can be moved from one sector to another during the game. Keep an eye on where your opponents are, because you might need to make some strategic moves to outmaneuver them.

Once everyone has placed their explorers, you’ll take turns. On your turn, you can do one of three things: move your explorer token, gather resources, or play an event card. It’s up to you to decide which action will give you the best advantage. Remember, the key to success in Hab Gut is carefully thinking through your choices!

Moving your explorer token is easy. Just choose a direction and move to the next sector in that direction. You can move as far as there are connected sectors in that direction. And don’t worry, you won’t get lost in space – the game board clearly shows which sectors are connected.

Now comes the exciting part – gathering resources. When you have your explorer token in a sector with resources, you can collect them. The type and amount of resources available in each sector are indicated on the game board. Be greedy, but don’t get too greedy – you might alert your opponents to your presence!

Lastly, event cards. These cards can spice things up during the game. They can give you an advantage or throw a wrench in your opponent’s plans. There are many different event cards, each with its own unique effect. So, choose wisely when to play them!

The game continues in this way until one player reaches the victory point threshold. Yes, that’s right – you need to earn victory points to win the game. First, we need to shuffle the 54 Market Cards. Everyone gets 8 cards, which they’ll put into the card holder on their left. To make things easier, sorting the cards by commodity type is a good idea. And don’t forget, you should be able to see the cards on both sides of you. The rest of the market cards are set aside for now, but keep them handy because we’ll need them later.

Next, each player takes a Charity Board and puts it in front of themselves. This board helps us keep track of our charitable donations during the game. It has four spaces for share cards and a space for money. This way, we can keep our charitable donations separate from our own money and investments.

Now, let’s sort the 60 Share Cards by type and place them near the game board. This will make it easier for us to access and use them during the game.

Let’s get started with the game! First, organize your money by separating it into different amounts, like one-dollar bills, five-dollar bills, and so on. Keep it close to the game board. Next, choose a player to be the banker. The banker will give each player 300 dollars to start. Now, let’s determine who goes first. The youngest player gets to be the start player and receives the Start Player Marker. Great! Now we know the basics. Let’s move on to the objective of the game.

The goal of the game is to end up with the most money. However, there’s a twist. Before we can determine the winner, we need to find out who donated the least money to charity. Even if a player has made a lot of money during the game, they will be eliminated if they didn’t donate enough. So, keep that in mind while strategizing.

Now, let’s talk about how the game is played. There are two rounds in total, and each round has four turns. Each turn is made up of two phases: the Stock Phase and the Market Manipulation Phase.

During the Stock Phase, players will do some stock trading. This is where you can buy and sell stocks to try and earn some money. Pay attention to the stock market trends and make your moves wisely.

In the Market Manipulation Phase, players can use special cards and take actions to affect the stock market. This is the time to use your strategies and try to manipulate the market in your favor. Keep in mind that other players will be doing the same, so be prepared for surprises.

When it’s my turn to play, I have some choices. I can do one thing, both things, or nothing at all. It’s up to me!

The first choice I have is to buy or sell shares. I can decide to buy some shares or sell the ones I already have. But I can’t do both things at the same time.

The second choice I have is to place one of my shares on my charity board. This is a special board just for my shares. It’s a nice way to show off my collection!

Let’s talk about buying shares. I can choose to buy 1, 2, or 3 share cards. I take them from the supply and pay the bank for them. I have to pay the current value, which is how much they cost right now. After I buy them, I keep them facedown next to me.

But there’s one thing I need to keep in mind. I can’t buy shares of wares that are in the “0” spot on the game board. Those shares aren’t available for purchase.

Selling Share Cards: You can sell any number of share cards that you have, up to a maximum of three. When you sell a share card, it goes back to its original pile. In return, you receive money from the bank based on the current value of the corresponding goods. The value is determined by the position of the price markers on the game board. So, the higher the price markers are, the more money you’ll get when you sell your share cards.

Let’s say I want to buy some share cards. I choose to buy one coal share for 80 and two rubber shares for 70 each. To get these share cards, I have to pay the bank a total of 220.

Now, imagine someone else wants to sell their share cards. They decide to sell a salt share for 150 and a tea share for 130. The person puts these shares back into the supply and the bank pays them 280.

Then, there’s another player who doesn’t want to buy or sell any shares during their turn.

If I want to do a good deed, I can place one of my share cards face down on my charity board.

Listen up: You can’t sell any charity board shares until the round is over, and they won’t count towards your victory pile either. These shares are bought solely for donation purposes, got it?

When the game wraps up, the player who coughed up the least cash for charity gets booted out, plain and simple. It doesn’t matter how much money they raked in for themselves.

Example:

So here’s the deal: I’m Player A, and I’ve made a decision. I want to contribute to my charity hoard this turn, so I choose one of my share cards and put it face-down on my charity hoard. It could even be a share card that I just bought!

Now, here’s the important part: at the end of the round, this card will be sold, but the money it generates won’t go into my personal wealth. Instead, it stays on my charity board, helping out a good cause.

The Phase of Shaping the Market

When it’s my turn, I have to make a decision. I can choose a market card from the card holder on my left or the one on my right. But here’s the thing – I can’t pick both cards from the same card holder. I have to mix it up!

Now, let’s talk about what happens when I play a card. First, I reveal the card I’ve chosen. Then, I move the marker of the corresponding ware a number of squares equal to the number on the card. After that, I throw the card away.

But wait, there’s more! I can also choose to halve a card. This means I reveal the card I’ve chosen and move the marker of the corresponding ware only half the number on the card. Then, I discard the card as well.

So, there you have it. It’s my job to make smart choices and strategically use my market cards to move the marker and advance in the game. It’s all about finding the right balance and making the most of my opportunities!

Note: It’s important to remember that the value of a ware can never be more or less than what is listed on the stock exchange board. If a card would require the marker to be moved beyond either end of the board, just move it as far as you can.

When the market manipulation phase is finished, the turn is over. Pass the start player pawn to the person on your left and start a new turn.

Example: Now it’s my turn to manipulate the market. I currently have 2 shares of salt, so I’m going to choose the +6 salt market card to raise the price of salt and hopefully make a big profit when I sell it on my next turn.

But I also want to keep the price of coffee from going up too much, so I’m going to lower the value of the +6 coffee market card by half.

The First Round Ends

The round comes to an end once all the players have played their cards. Then, we all reveal the shares on our charity boards and receive money based on the current value of the goods.

After that, the shares go back to the bank, and the money we earned from selling them is added to our charity boards.

Important: You cannot use this money until the game is over. This phase helps you see who might be in danger of being eliminated.

We shuffle the entire market deck and each player draws 8 cards, just like in the first round. Arrange the cards in the card holder to your left. The price markers stay where they are. Now, let’s move on to the second turn.

The Game Ends

After the second round, all players sell the shares on their charity board and get money based on their current value.

This money is added to the charity money earned in the first round. If you have the least charity money, you’re out of the game. If there’s a tie, all tied players are eliminated. The bank takes back all the charity money.
