1. Each of us will get a set of selection cards. The number of cards you get depends on how many players are in the game. For example, if there are three players, you’ll receive cards numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4. Any extra cards go back in the box.

To set up the game, I’ll need to create the donut deck. This deck is made up of cards, each with its own color and dots that show the minimum number of players needed to play that card.

Once I have the deck ready, I’ll shuffle it and put it face down in the center of the play area. I’ll make sure to leave some space to the left of the deck for a discard pile.

Next, I’ll draw a number of cards from the donut deck equal to the number of players plus one. I’ll place these cards face up to the right of the deck. This is called the donut row.

To keep track of the cards in the donut row, I’ll add a donut row number indicator above each card. Starting from the card closest to the deck, I’ll label them in numerical order. The first card will be card 1, the next card will be card 2, and so on. These indicators will stay in place for the whole game.

Now, let’s get into the game play!

When we play a game, it happens in different parts, which we call rounds. At the beginning of each round, we all have to pick a card from the row of donuts. But here’s the catch: we have to do it secretly. We each have a special card, called a selection card, that we use to make our choice. We pick the number on the selection card that matches the position of the card we want on the row.

Let me explain with an example. If I want to take the second card from the row, I would place my “2” selection card face down in front of me.

Once we’ve all made our choices and placed our selection cards face down, we reveal them at the same time. We start with the lowest selection number and go in order, checking if we get to take the card we want.

In the game, if multiple players select the same card, nobody receives it! Instead, we discard that card and move it to the discard pile.

But if you’re the only player to choose a card, you get to take it from the donut row and show it face up in front of you. This means that all the cards you own are visible to everyone for the entire game.

Special Cards

Hey there! Let me fill you in on a cool game feature. See that little symbol at the corners of a card’s description border? It means the card has a special power that you have to use right away when you take it from the donut row. Just read the text on the card to know what action to take.

Now, when there are multiple actions to take, we like to keep things organized. So we resolve them in numerical order. That means you start with the action in the 1 slot before moving on to the next selection number.

But wait, there’s a rule: You can only use a card’s power when you take it from the donut row. It won’t activate if you get the card from another player, draw from the deck, or take from the discard pile.

For example: I won a pastry called an eclair from the row of donuts and I use its power to take the top card from the discard pile.

I get a pastry called a french cruller and I place it face up in front of me. I don’t use the power for the french cruller, but I still get 2 points for that card at the end of the game.

Starting a New Round

Once all of the selected cards have been taken (and all special powers have been resolved), we need to refill the empty spaces in numerical order with cards from the deck of donuts.

All of us should take our selection cards back into our hands and start a new round, which plays out just like the previous one.

End of the Game

The game comes to an end when there aren’t enough donuts left in the deck to fully refill the row of donuts. At that point, each of us counts up our points and the player with the highest total becomes the winner.
