Get Ready to Play Gem Rush!
Are you excited to play Gem Rush? You’ve come to the right place! I’m here to explain all the rules of this awesome game. So, let’s get started!
Objective:
In Gem Rush, your goal is to collect as many gems as possible. There are different types of gems, each with its own point value. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!
Game Setup:
To start playing, you need a game board, gems, and a dice. Place the game board in the center of your playing area. Each player should have their own set of gem tokens. Now, let’s begin!
Gameplay:
On your turn, roll the dice to determine how many spaces you can move. Then, move your game token along the numbered spaces on the game board. Each space represents a different action you can take.
When you land on a gem space, you get to collect a gem of your choice from the supply. Remember, each gem has a different point value, so choose wisely!
There are also special spaces on the game board that give you extra advantages or challenges. Pay attention to these spaces, as they can greatly impact your strategy!
End of the Game:
The game ends when all the gem tokens have been collected from the supply. At this point, each player totals up the points on their collected gems. The player with the highest score wins the game and becomes the Gem Rush champion!
Remember:
Gem Rush is a fun and exciting game that requires strategy and luck. Take your time to plan your moves and make the most of each turn. May the best gem collector win!

Getting Started
Choosing the Game Mode
You have different options to choose from:
- Beginner: 35 points
- Intermediate: 45 points
- Advanced: 55 points
- Expert: 65 points
- Master: 75 points
If you want a quick game, go for Rush Mode. In this mode, you can set a target score. We suggest 20 points for 4 players or less, and 15 points for 5 players or more. Of course, feel free to adjust the target score depending on how long you want the game to last.
Once a player reaches the target score, the round will continue until all players have taken an equal number of turns.
The Dwarves
I’m about to explain how to play the game “Gem Rush.” It’s pretty straightforward, so follow along and you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
First, let’s talk about the characters. Every player gets to be a dwarf, and each dwarf has their own set of unique skills. It’s important to note that even though the skills may vary, all dwarves play the same way. So, you can choose any dwarf you like without worrying about it affecting the gameplay.
Once everyone has chosen their dwarf, we need to decide who goes first. That player will receive the first player marker, which is basically a special token that signifies their turn.
Now let’s move on to the skills. There are different types of skills in this game, and one of them is called “Gems.” To start, we shuffle the Gem cards and give each player four cards from the deck. Any remaining cards will be set aside to form the Gem deck. Don’t forget to leave some space next to the Gem deck for a discard pile.
During the game, it’s a good idea to keep your hand face up so that your allies can see it. This way, you can work together and strategize more effectively. However, it’s important to keep your hand private from other players. We want to maintain a fair and competitive environment.
Lastly, each player will receive a set of point gems. These gems are used to keep track of your score throughout the game. They come in different colors and have specific values associated with them. Make sure to distribute these gems to each player.
Now that we have covered the basic setup, we can dive into the exciting world of Gem Rush. Get ready to embark on an adventure filled with strategy, competition, and, of course, lots of gems!
When you’re playing this game, make sure to set the point gems aside until you need them.
How to Play
Now, it’s your turn! Remember, the game continues until the end. When it’s your turn, you have to follow these steps:
- First, let’s check if the game is over.
- If not, I need to discard cards until I have only 4 left in my hand.
- Next, I can move up to 3 steps.
- Once I’m done moving, it’s time to take one action.
- Lastly, I have to burn 3 cards.
Step O: Checking for Game End
I should be on the lookout for a few things. First, if any player has reached the target number of points and I am the current player with the First Player marker, the game will end. In that case, the player with the most points will be the winner. It’s important to note that the game can only end on my turn, so everyone will have an equal number of turns.
Step 1: Discarding Down to 4 Cards
If I have more than 4 Gem cards in my hand, I have to get rid of some. I can choose which ones to discard until I’m left with only 4 cards.
It’s worth mentioning that I can’t use any of the cards I’m discarding during this phase. They just have to go.
Step 2: Moving Up to 3 Steps
Hey there! Let me tell you how you can move your dwarf in the mine. You can take up to 3 steps, or you can choose to move fewer steps or not move at all.
- If two Room tiles have doors connecting them, you can move between them in just 1 step.
- If two Room tiles have walls between them, you can’t move between them.
- If one tile has a door and the adjacent tile has a wall, you can only move from the tile with the door to the tile with the wall. You can’t go the other way around.
- If your current tile has a door leading to empty space, you can move into that space by creating a new room.
Remember, your current tile must have a door in the direction you want to move. You don’t need a matching door on the destination tile.
Let me show you an example of an empty space:
Let’s talk about the movement example.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the importance of movement, but have you ever wondered why it’s so essential for our well-being?
Movement is more than just physical exercise; it’s a way for our bodies to stay healthy and strong. When I move, I can feel my muscles working and my heart pounding. It’s a reminder that I’m alive and capable of doing amazing things.
Have you ever noticed how good you feel after going for a walk or playing a game of soccer? That’s because movement releases endorphins, which are chemicals in our brain that make us feel happy and energized. It’s like a natural high!
But movement is not only good for our physical health; it also has a positive impact on our mental well-being. When I’m feeling stressed or anxious, going for a run helps me clear my mind and feel more relaxed. It’s like a reset button for my brain.
I also find that movement allows me to connect with my body and be more present in the moment. Whether I’m practicing yoga or dancing to my favorite song, I’m fully engaged in the experience. It’s a form of self-expression that brings joy to my life.
So, the next time you’re feeling tired or stressed, remember that movement can be the answer. You don’t have to run a marathon or join a gym; simply finding activities you enjoy and incorporating them into your daily routine can make a world of difference.
Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, playing a sport, or dancing in your living room, movement is a gift we can give to ourselves. So go ahead, get moving, and experience the incredible benefits for yourself!
Step 3: Take Action
Now it’s your turn to make a move. You have two options:
- Draw a card from the Gem deck
- Use the ability on your current Room tile, which usually involves drawing Gem cards
Remember: Once you’ve taken your action, you can’t continue moving or building rooms.
If you need to draw more cards than there are in the Gem deck, start by drawing as many as you can. Then, shuffle the discard pile and continue drawing. If there still aren’t enough cards, just draw as many as possible.
Step 4: Burn Some Cards
As a group, we’ll need to get rid of 3 cards. You can choose from any player’s hand or take cards from the top of the Gem deck. If necessary, we’ll reshuffle the deck after.
Usually, you should start by burning cards from the deck, unless there are not enough cards. Burnt cards are put back in the box and cannot be used again for the rest of the game.
Here’s an important thing to remember: Discarding cards is not the same as burning them. Discarded cards are shuffled back into the deck if it runs out, but burnt cards are never used again. Players only burn cards during this part of the game.
The game is over when the last Gem card is burnt. Since there are 75 Gem cards and players have to burn 3 cards per turn, the game will go on for a total of 25 turns (unless players decide to stop after reaching their point goal).
For example, if there are 5 players in the game, each player will get 5 turns.
Building Rooms
When we come across an empty space without a Room tile, we must create a new room if we want to keep moving. This means we have to spend one movement step, just like any other move, and we end up in the room we just constructed.
To build a new room, we have to get rid of Gem cards from our hand. These cards should have all the gems shown on the door we moved through. If we don’t have enough matching gems, we can’t make that move.
Most Gem cards have two gems on them, and we can count both of them towards our requirements. But if we only need one of the gems, the other one is wasted.
Once we’ve paid the necessary gems, we earn the points indicated on the door, right below the cost we just paid. Then we draw a new tile from the Room deck and place it in the space where we entered.
Here’s an Example of Constructing Rooms:
Hey there! When you come across this door, you’ll see three types of tiles: Obsidian, Permafrost, and Electrum. The cool part is that you get to discard one card that matches Obsidian and Electrum, and another card that matches Permafrost and Soulstone. Just a heads-up, the Soulstone will be wasted. Bummer, right?
Once you’ve made the necessary sacrifices, you’ll receive the 2 points that are marked on the door. You can spot them on the black hex below the cost. Don’t forget to draw a new tile from the Room deck and play it in the space you just entered. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and open that door!
To build a new room, you need to make sure that one of its doors faces the room you just left. This means either of the edges with a green check mark can face the room you’re moving from.
You can rotate the new Room tile however you like, but you must place it in a way that the door leads back to where you came from. You don’t need to match any other adjacent doors; just focus on the one used for construction. The number of legal rotations will always match the number of doors on the new tile.
Remember: You only construct a room when you move into an empty space. If there’s already a room tile in your destination space, you don’t have to pay any gems or score points. It’s just a regular movement.
When it’s my turn, I get to place my dwarf in the new room I’ve just built. If I haven’t used up all of my moves, I can keep moving and even build more rooms in the same turn, as long as I meet the requirements for doing so.
Remember: Some doors are free, and some doors don’t give you any points.
Regular Gems (
)
There are seven kinds of regular gems, and they can be used to pay for any costs that involve them.
Special Gems – Discover Their Power!
Let’s explore the fascinating world of special gems and uncover their unique abilities!
Diamond Dust – The Mysterious Wild Gem
Get ready to be amazed by the Diamond Dust – a gem that holds incredible power! This special jewel is like a chameleon, capable of transforming into any standard gem. It’s a real game-changer! When you spend it, Diamond Dust can replace any regular gem. But when you draw it, it counts as a Diamond Dust gem. Isn’t that incredible?
Echoglass – The Master of Mirroring
Behold the magnificent Echoglass! This special gem has the unbelievable ability to mimic any standard gem you spend at the same time. It’s like having a magical mirror that reflects the powers of other gems. But there’s a catch – Echoglass can’t copy other special gems, not even the gem that Diamond Dust is simulating. It’s still an incredible gem, though!
Orichalcum – The Mystical Metal
Prepare to be enchanted by the mystical Orichalcum gem! This extraordinary jewel is known for its legendary properties. While it doesn’t imitate other gems like Echoglass, it possesses its own mesmerizing capabilities. Orichalcum is a gem with a unique power, distinct from any other. Its secrets are waiting to be unraveled!
When you’re constructing a room, using Orichalcum doesn’t help with the actual payment. However, it does give you an extra point for each Orichalcum used during construction. Keep in mind that you can only use Orichalcum if the other gem on the same card is useful for the construction.
Now, let’s talk about Warpstone
Warpstone, unlike Orichalcum, doesn’t contribute to paying for the room’s construction. Instead, it allows you to build in any location without spending any movement.
With Warpstone, you have the freedom to move any distance you want when constructing a room. You don’t even need a clear path to your desired destination. You simply appear in the new room you’re constructing, without using any movement at all (not even the usual 1 move needed for the construction itself).
But here’s the catch: I still need to connect the new room to an existing door just like if I had gone through that door myself. And that means following all the construction rules. So in the end, I end up in the fresh new room, connected to the rest of the house.
But wait, there’s another option. If I have a card with a Warpstone on it, I can simply discard it during the movement step. That lets me move to any existing room without having to construct anything at all. And the best part? It doesn’t cost me any movement points.
A Room with Abilities
Now, let’s talk about what makes each room special. Every room has a unique ability that I can use during my turn to gain Gem cards. Pretty neat, right?
Now, these abilities can take on different forms, but they usually fall into a few general categories. Let’s take a look:
Grab
Gather the cards from the Gem deck and hold them in your hand (without showing them to others).
Get Ready to Discover the Magic!
Hey there! Let’s dive into the world of wonder and uncover hidden treasures together.
Imagine this: a deck full of precious Gems, waiting to be revealed. You and I are about to embark on a journey where the possibilities are endless.
First things first. Let’s grab some cards from the Gem deck and place them face up, so we can truly appreciate their beauty. Each card holds a unique gemstone, each with its own story and enchanting properties.
As we gaze upon these shimmering crystals, let your curiosity guide you. Notice how the colors dance and sparkle, as if they were alive. Feel the energy emanating from them, beckoning you to explore further.
Now, let your imagination run wild. What do these gems represent to you? Are they symbols of strength, love, or perhaps even luck? Close your eyes and let yourself be transported to a realm where anything is possible.
It’s fascinating how these gems can evoke different emotions in each of us. They hold the power to capture our hearts and elevate our spirits. Just like the gems themselves, we are all unique and precious in our own way.
So, my friend, are you ready to embark on this dazzling adventure with me? Let’s uncover the wonders that lie within this Gem deck, and allow the magic to awaken the hidden gems within ourselves.
Uncover
I’m going to show you an exciting way to find specific cards in a deck. We’ll go through the deck one card at a time until we find the cards we’re looking for. Any cards that don’t meet our conditions will be put aside.
Keep
Keep any cards that are revealed and match the conditions specified. If there are any revealed cards that you don’t want to keep, you can discard them after the action is over.
Put Away
Put some cards from your hand into the discard pile.
Name a Gem
Hey there! So, in this game, you get to pick one of the eleven gem types. Cool, right? And guess what? Each gem has its own special powers. Now, here’s the deal: the effect of your chosen gem will vary depending on which one you name. Pretty neat, huh?
Anytime you find yourself needing more cards – whether it’s to draw, reveal, or dig – but there aren’t enough left in the Gem deck, don’t worry. Just draw as many cards as you can, shuffle the ones you’ve already used, and keep on drawing. If there still aren’t enough cards, just draw as many as you can. Simple, right?
Symbols that show an “X”
Now, pay attention to this. When you come across a symbol with an “X” instead of a number, you get to choose any number you want. But, here’s the catch: you can only choose a number that allows you to fully use the ability of that room. And no cheating! You can’t discard more cards than you actually have in your hand. Oh, and by the way, if there are multiple “X”s in the same room, they all have the same value. For example, if the room says “Discard X, Reveal X,” and you choose “2,” then you discard 2 cards and reveal 2 cards. Simple as that.
What Do the Symbols on Room Effects Mean?
Have you ever walked into a room and noticed a bunch of symbols on the walls or furniture? They might look like hieroglyphics or ancient runes, but they actually have a specific meaning. These symbols are known as “room effects symbols” and they can have a big impact on the way a room feels.
The symbols themselves are simple and abstract, which makes them easy to understand at a glance. They’re designed to convey complex ideas in a visual way, so you can quickly understand the vibe of a room without having to read paragraphs of text.
For example, one common symbol is a swirl, which represents energy and movement. When you see this symbol in a room, you can expect that the space will feel lively and dynamic. On the other hand, a symbol that looks like a branch with leaves represents nature and tranquility. If you see this symbol, you can expect the room to have a calming and peaceful atmosphere.
By understanding what these symbols mean, you can make better choices when it comes to decorating your space. Each symbol evokes a different mood or feeling, so you can use them strategically to create the ambiance you desire. For example, if you want your living room to feel cozy and intimate, choosing symbols that represent warmth and comfort can help you achieve that. On the other hand, if you want your office to feel energetic and productive, symbols that represent movement and growth might be more appropriate.
So, next time you find yourself in a room with mysterious symbols, take a moment to decipher their meaning. You might be surprised at how much they can tell you about the space and how they can help you create the atmosphere you’re looking for.
When it comes to using room effect symbols, it’s important to remember that they are always executed from left to right. Let’s dive into this concept and see how it works.
In this pairing of symbols, I would start by drawing and revealing Gem cards from the Gem deck. I will keep doing this until I have revealed three cards that either have a Star Tear, a Fire Ruby, or both. If I come across any cards that do not meet the “Dig” condition, I will discard them.
After revealing the cards, I get to choose two out of those three cards to keep and put into my hand. The remaining card will be discarded. This way, I can strategically select the cards that will benefit me the most in the game.
Understanding the order and process of room effect symbols can really elevate your gameplay. By following these steps, you’ll be able to make the most out of the cards you draw and increase your chances of success. So, next time you play, keep these rules in mind and see how they can enhance your experience.
Let me tell you about this interesting game mechanic that involves three symbols. First, I would name a gem. Then, I would reveal three Gem cards from the top of the Gem deck. Finally, I would keep any of those cards that had a gem matching the one I named, and discard the rest. It’s a simple but exciting process that adds an extra layer of strategy to the game.
Rooms for Taking Action
If a room in the game has an orange anvil symbol below its name, you can use that room’s effect during your turn as your action.
Rooms that can be used during the movement phase
If you see a blue arrow symbol under a room’s title, you can use its effect during your Movement Phase by spending one movement step.
You can also use the effect as your action if you prefer.
For example: When you’re on the Warped Mirror Room tile, you can swap locations with another player by spending one movement step. Afterward, you can continue moving from your new location.
If a room has a gray headlamp symbol under it, that means it’s a Free action.
You can use the effect of that room during your Movement Phase as many times as you want, and it won’t cost you anything.
For example: Let’s say you’re on the Mystic Elevator Room tile. You have the power to move the entire room, along with everyone inside it (including yourself), to a new location. And the best part? You can do this without spending a single penny. After you’re done moving the room, you can still continue moving as usual.
Mine Carts
Mine Carts are a bit different from the other rooms. The first Mine Cart doesn’t have any special abilities. But once there are at least two Mine Carts, something interesting happens. You can now travel from one Mine Cart to another without any cost during your Movement Phase.
Tunnels
Tunnels are like no other room. You can’t stop in a tunnel. Once you enter a tunnel, you have to keep moving along the path until it leads you out in a different direction.
Entering tunnels does not require any additional movement. You only need to spend 1 movement point to enter the tunnel and travel to the other side, as if the two rooms were right next to each other.
Remember, tunnel tiles have four doors, but they don’t all connect to each other. They only form pairs of connections. You have to exit through the door that connects to the entrance.
If you come across multiple tunnel tiles that are connected in a line, keep moving along the path until you reach a space that is not a tunnel. However, this still costs a total of 1 movement point.
Tunnels and Construction
When I come across a tunnel tile while building, I place it in the spot where I’m constructing. Then, I continue through the tunnel and come out on the other side. If I end up in an empty space again, I go ahead and construct another room there. It doesn’t cost me any extra gems, and I don’t earn any extra points for this additional construction.
If the new room is also a tunnel, I repeat the process. However, if the tunnel leads me into a room that has already been built, I simply stop in that room. I still have to pay the original construction cost and score the points, even if the only new tile was a tunnel.
But wait! What if you stumble upon a tunnel that’s already there, and it leads you into an empty area? Well, in that case, you get to create a brand new room. The cool part is, you get to do it without using the cost or points of the tunnel itself! Instead, you’ll use the cost and points of the door that brought you into the tunnel.
So basically, you can build your new room as if the tunnel didn’t even exist, with one difference. The new Room tile will be placed at the very end of the tunnel.
Different Types of Skill Cards
In the game, Skill cards are like secret weapons that give me special powers to bend the rules a little. There are a bunch of ways I can use them to my advantage.
Normal Skill
This is the basic type of Skill card. I can play it whenever I want, as long as it’s my turn. It gives me an extra boost to help me win!
Choice of Skills
Some Skill cards let me choose what power I want to use. I can pick the one that will help me the most in the game. It’s like having my own superpower!
With a Shared Skill card, I can use it to help a friend in the game. It’s like passing on my superpower to them so we can both be awesome!
Chaos Magic
Chaos Magic is a special type of Skill card. It’s super powerful, but it’s also a bit unpredictable. I never know exactly what will happen when I use it. It adds a twist of excitement to the game!
Magic Circle
The Magic Circle Skill card is like a secret spell that I can use to protect myself. It shields me from certain effects in the game, making me even more invincible!
Let’s start by dealing a Skill card to every player. However, instead of using the card we receive, we’ll place it between ourselves and the player on our left. This means that we can use both the Skill card on our left and the one on our right. Now, here’s the important part: when we use two skills at the same time, we can’t use gems from one skill to fulfill the requirements of another skill. For example, if we use Harmonization to turn a card into 2 Echoglass, we can’t then use Transmutation to turn those 2 Echoglass into one Diamond Dust. Keep that in mind!
Now, let’s talk about Evocation. When Evocation gives us an extra gem in our player color, we can’t use Permeation on a card that doesn’t normally have our color. However, we can use both skills on the same card if that card already has our color. It’s all about using our skills wisely!
Note: If you want to score higher in Crisis Mode, you might want to increase your point target by 5-10 points to make up for the extra power skills give you.
