Game Rules for Whims of the Sultan
Welcome! If you’re here, it means you’re interested in playing Whims of the Sultan. Well, you’re in luck because I’m about to lay out the game rules for you. Let’s jump right in, shall we?
Objective
The goal of Whims of the Sultan is to win as many points as possible by making smart moves and outwitting your opponents. The game is played with a standard deck of cards and can be enjoyed by two to six players.
Setting Up
First things first, let’s get the game set up. Shuffle the deck of cards and deal seven cards to each player. Then, place the remaining cards face-down to create a draw pile. Select a player to go first, and you’re all ready to start!
Gameplay
During each turn, you have two options: play a card or draw a card.
If you choose to play a card, you must follow these rules:
- You can play a card of the same number or the next ascending or descending number of the card on top of the discard pile.
- If you don’t have a card that matches the requirements, you can play a ‘Sultan’ card or draw a card from the draw pile.
- ‘Sultan’ cards are special and can be played at any time. They allow you to change the direction of play, skip the next player’s turn, or force the next player to draw cards from the draw pile.
- The round ends when a player has no cards left in their hand.
If you choose to draw a card, simply take one card from the draw pile and add it to your hand. The next player then takes their turn, and the game continues clockwise.
Scoring
Once a round ends, it’s time to tally up the points. Here’s how it works:
- Each player counts the total point value of the cards remaining in their hand.
- Numbered cards are worth their face value.
- ‘Sultan’ cards are worth 20 points each.
- The player with the lowest score receives points equal to the difference between their score and the highest score among the players. If there is a tie for the lowest score, both players receive points.
The game continues with new rounds until a pre-determined point threshold is reached. The player with the fewest points at that time is declared the winner!
Conclusion
Now that you know the game rules for Whims of the Sultan, it’s time to gather your friends or family and start playing! Remember, the key to success is strategy and keeping a close eye on your opponents’ moves. Good luck!

Getting Ready to Play with Five Tribes Expansion
Note: Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that this expansion is all about making your Five Tribes game even better with more players! But remember, you’ll need to have one of the expansions that adds tiles to the game for this option to work. Now, let’s talk setup.
- When you’re playing with 3 to 5 players, each of you will get 8 camels and 1 turn marker in your chosen color. If it’s just 2 players, you’ll each get 11 camels and 2 turn markers in pink or blue.
- Everyone starts with 50 gold coins. That’s 9 coins worth “5” each and 5 coins worth “1” each.
- Don’t forget the bid order and turn order tracks! Make sure to switch them from the base game with the ones provided in this expansion. Oh, and everything else like Resource cards, Djinn cards (including the new ones!), gold coins, palm trees, and palaces go in the usual spots.
When we start a game of Five Tribes, we need to determine the order in which players will bid for their turn. To do this, we take the players’ turn markers and place them randomly on the bid order track. This will establish the initial bidding order.
If we are playing without the Artisans of Naqala expansion, we mix the 6 tiles from the expansion with the ones from the core game. These tiles are then placed randomly on the table, creating a 6×6 tile square, which serves as the board for the game. To make it easier to read the board, it’s a good idea to keep all the tiles oriented in the same direction.
To start the game, I’ll need to remove the three Whim of the Sultan cards that have the Artisans symbol. After that, I’ll shuffle the remaining Whim of the Sultan cards and place them face down as a draw pile near the board.
Next, I’ll draw the top five cards and place one face up on each fabulous city.
Now it’s time to mix up the meeples! I’ll take the meeples from the core game and this expansion and put them all together in a bag. Then, I’ll grab random sets of three meeples and drop them onto each tile, except for the Great Lake tile, which remains empty.
Setting up with the Artisans of Naqala expansion
To set up the game with the Artisans of Naqala expansion, I’ll mix the six tiles from the Whims of the Sultan expansion with the ones from the core game.
From this mixed stack, I’ll draw 14 tiles at random. Then, I’ll add the six tiles from the Artisans of Naqala expansion. I’ll shuffle these 20 tiles together and place them randomly on the table to form a 4×5 grid of tiles.
As I start the game, I have a 6 x 7 grid in front of me. I need to place the remaining 22 tiles on this grid. I have to be careful and make sure that all the tiles have the same orientation. If a tile is completely surrounded by mountains or cut off from the rest of the board because of the Great Lake or the Chasm, I have to start over. It’s important that all tiles remain accessible.
Next, I place the mountains on the designated spaces on the workshop tiles. These mountains will add an interesting element to the game.
Now it’s time to set up the Whim of the Sultan cards. I shuffle them well and place them face down as a draw pile near the board. I then draw the top 5 cards and put one face up on each fabulous city. These cards will influence the gameplay and add some excitement.
Finally, I mix all the meeples from the core game and the expansions in a bag. I grab random sets of 3 meeples and drop them onto each tile, except for the Great Lake and the Chasm, which remain empty. This adds some randomness and variety to the game.
And with that, I’m all set up and ready to start playing. The board is ready, the mountains are in place, the Whim of the Sultan cards are set, and the meeples are scattered across the tiles. Let’s see what adventures await me in this wondrous land!
First, I shuffle the Item markers and stack them face down next to the board. Then, each player gets their tent in their chosen color.
Let’s Play!
This guide will show us how to play with the exciting new game elements. Don’t worry, the other rules stay the same.
Introducing New Tiles
The Enigmatic Great Lake
The Great Lake is an enigmatic and mysterious tile that holds many secrets.
It is a tile that always remains untouched, its depths forever unexplored.
But its presence is not without consequence, for it holds a powerful influence over the surrounding landscape.
Once the game draws to a close, the palaces and palm trees that grace the tiles neighboring the Great Lake experience a remarkable transformation.
They become imbued with a newfound significance, their value multiplied by two.
A palace, which would normally bring 5 points, now brings 10, while a palm tree, typically worth 3 points, now brings 6.
This lake, shrouded in both mystery and splendor, casts a spell over the land, forever altering the course of the game.
The Remarkable Fabulous Cities (5 Tiles)
Controlling the fabulous cities is a major stepping stone towards victory. The more cities you control, the more points you score at the end of the game. Here’s how it works:
- If you control one city, you score 5 points.
- If you control two cities, you score 20 points.
- If you control three cities, you score 45 points.
- If you control four cities, you score 80 points.
- If you control all five cities, you score 125 points. So, be careful not to let a single player take control of them all!
Tile Action: When you finish your turn in a fabulous city, you can add the Whim of the Sultan card to your hand if there is one on the tile. However, if there is no card on the city, you don’t receive anything.
During the clean-up phase, a new face-up Whim of the Sultan card is added to cities where there are no cards.
If you’re really passionate about a particular Whim of the Sultan card, it might be worth bidding more to make sure you get it before anyone else. It can be an exciting rush to secure that special card early on!
Just a heads up: When you use the builders action or the tent effect, three Fabulous cities are considered blue tiles, while two are considered red tiles. It’s interesting how the colors can change in different situations.
Let’s Talk Whim Of The Sultan Cards
Each card represents a unique request from the sultan. If you manage to fulfill his requirements, he’ll reward you generously with gold.
When you get your hands on a Whim of the Sultan card, there are a couple of things that can happen:
First, if you already meet the card’s requirements, you can place it face up in front of you and immediately gain the value of the gold coins shown on the card. It’s like finding buried treasure right away!
If, however, you don’t meet the card’s requirements just yet, you’ll need to keep the card in your hand for a little while. But don’t worry! Later in the game, as soon as you fulfill the conditions on the card, you can reveal it, place it face up in front of you, and then collect the value of the gold coins shown. It’s like getting a reward for your hard work!
At the end of the game, any cards that you still have in your hand are simply discarded. They don’t count for anything, but they also don’t bring any penalties. So don’t stress about them too much!
If you need more information about the effects of the cards, you can always refer to the summary sheet. It has all the details you need.
New Bid and Turn Order Tracks
Note: These new tracks are only used when playing with five players.
Now, let me explain the new turn order track to you. On this track, you’ll notice that there are two spots that are each worth one, three, and five gold coins. So, if you play your cards right, there’s a chance to score some serious treasure!
When it comes to bidding for those values, it’s pretty straightforward. Think of it like the “0” spot in the core game order track. Just like with the “0” spot, the first player to bid one of those values gets to place their turn marker on the corresponding bottom spot.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The second player who wants to bid on the same value has to push the turn marker onto the top spot of that value. This makes room for their own marker, and they get to play before the first player. But here’s the catch: there are only two spots available for each value. That means each value can only have two players bidding on it.
So, if you’re looking to play strategically and secure a particular value, you’ll need to be quick and watch out for other players who might be eyeing the same value as you. It’s like a race to claim the spots before anyone else does. It adds an extra layer of excitement and competition to the game!
With this new bidding mechanic, it’s important to strategically plan your moves and consider which values you want to prioritize. The limited spots make every decision crucial, as your placement in the bidding order can greatly impact your overall strategy.
So, get ready to dive into the exhilarating experience of bidding for those values. Will you be the first to claim a spot, or will you have to chase after your opponents? The choice is yours, but remember – there can only be two players for each value. Good luck!
Hey there! Let’s talk about the turn order track. It’s this nifty little tool that keeps things organized when we’re playing games. You know that feeling when everyone is trying to take their turn at the same time and chaos breaks loose? Well, the turn order track is here to save the day!
The turn order track is a simple concept, but it can make a huge difference in how smoothly a game plays out. Basically, it’s a track that shows the order in which players take their turns. It helps to avoid confusion and arguments by clearly displaying who goes next.
When you’re playing a game, it’s important to keep things fair and give everyone a chance to shine. That’s where the turn order track comes in. It ensures that everyone gets their turn in a nice, orderly fashion. No more arguing over who goes first or forgetting whose turn it is!
Using a turn order track is super easy. All you have to do is move your marker along the track to indicate whose turn it is. Start at the beginning and go around the track clockwise until you’ve cycled through all the players. It’s a simple and effective way to keep things organized.
So, why is the turn order track so important? Well, it keeps the game running smoothly and keeps everyone on the same page. No more confusion or chaos – just a well-structured game where everyone knows when it’s their turn to shine.
Remember, the turn order track is your friend. It’s there to help you and make your gaming experience better. So next time you’re playing a game, give it a try. You’ll thank me later!
