Filler Game Rules

Introduction

Welcome to the exciting world of Filler! In this game, I’ll guide you through the rules and help you understand how to play. Filler is a strategic game that requires quick thinking and careful planning. Are you ready to dive in?

The Goal

The ultimate goal in Filler is to fill the game board with as many of your colored tiles as possible. You’ll be competing against another player, so you’ll need to use your cunning and strategy to outsmart them. The player with the most tiles on the board at the end of the game wins!

The Game Board

The game board in Filler is a grid made up of squares. Each player will have their own colored tiles that they can place on the board. The board starts off empty, and as the game progresses, it will start to fill up with tiles.

Starting the Game

To start the game, each player will take turns placing one tile on the board. You can place your tile on any empty square on the board. The first player will place their tile, then it will be the second player’s turn, and so on.

Expanding Your Territory

When it’s your turn, you have two options: you can either place a new tile on the board or expand your existing territory. To expand your territory, you can place a tile next to one of your existing tiles. The new tile must be adjacent to your existing tile, either horizontally or vertically.

Blocking Your Opponent

One of the key strategies in Filler is blocking your opponent. If you can strategically place your tiles to block your opponent from expanding their territory, you’ll have an advantage. By blocking your opponent, you can limit their options and force them to make suboptimal moves.

End of the Game

The game ends when there are no more empty squares on the board or when neither player can place any more tiles. At this point, the player with the most tiles on the board wins the game. If both players have the same number of tiles, it’s a tie!

Conclusion

Now that you understand the rules of Filler, it’s time to start playing! Remember to use your strategy and cunning to outsmart your opponent. Good luck and have fun!

  • Setting Up the Game

Introducing the Chefs: Each player will receive a set of 3 chef cards and a reference card, all featuring the same border color. Any extra cards can be put aside in the box.

Let’s get started with creating the Recipe Deck. First, I’ll need to gather the 10 advanced recipe cards, which have a red border, and return them to the box. If everyone has played before or we have 6 players, we can skip this step. Next, I’ll shuffle the remaining recipe cards and give each player 10 cards. Any extra cards can be put back in the box for now.

Now, it’s time to create the Recipe Book. I’ll take the deck of recipe cards and reveal as many cards as there are players, plus one. These revealed cards will be placed in a row in the center of the table. This will be our Recipe Book, where we can find inspiration for our culinary creations.

Discover the World of Recipe Cards

Have you ever experienced that magical feeling of holding a recipe card in your hand? Each recipe card is like a little world of culinary wonders waiting to be explored. And the best part? It’s all right there at your fingertips.

When you glance at the left side of the card, you’ll find a neat column of information that instantly grabs your attention. It’s like a secret code, decipherable only by the lucky ones who hold it. This treasure trove holds vital details that will guide you through your culinary journey.

But the card doesn’t stop there – oh no! Flip it over, and a whole new realm opens up before your eyes. You’ll be captivated by the rest of the card, a world reserved only for the recipe book. Here, you’ll dive deeper into the ingredients and methods, unraveling the mysteries of culinary perfection.

    Introducing the Language of Icons

As you embark on your culinary adventures, you’ll encounter a magical symbol known as the Ingredients icon. This symbol represents the key players in every recipe – the ingredients that bring it to life. They are the building blocks of deliciousness, waiting to be combined in perfect harmony.

Requirements tells you what you need to make this recipe.

Victory Points are what you need to win the game.

But how do you get these Victory Points? Well, there are many ways to earn them. You can gain Victory Points by completing objectives, achieving goals, or acquiring certain items. The more Victory Points you have, the closer you are to victory.

Now, you might be wondering why Victory Points are so important. The reason is that they represent your progress in the game. Each Victory Point you earn is a step towards winning. It’s like a measurement of your success.

So, the key to winning is to focus on earning Victory Points. You need to strategize and make decisions that will help you accumulate these points. You have to think ahead, plan your moves, and consider the consequences of your actions.

Remember, every decision you make can have an impact on your Victory Points total. It’s all about making the right choices and taking calculated risks.

So, what are you waiting for? Start earning those Victory Points and aim for victory!

Special Abilities are like magical bonuses that unlock when you complete a recipe. They’re like having a secret superpower!

So, here’s the deal: when you’re following a recipe and you get all the ingredients and steps just right, something special happens. It’s like a surprise reward for your hard work!

Imagine this: you’re making a batch of chocolate chip cookies. You gather all the ingredients, mix them together, and pop the dough into the oven. As they bake, a magical aroma fills the air. You can practically taste the warm, gooey goodness already!

And then it happens – the special ability kicks in. As you open the oven door, you’re greeted with a batch of cookies that are perfectly golden brown, with just the right amount of crispy edges and chewy centers. It’s like they’ve been infused with a touch of culinary enchantment!

But here’s the best part: special abilities aren’t just limited to cookies. They can happen with all sorts of recipes. Imagine making a pizza from scratch, and when you take it out of the oven, the cheese is perfectly bubbly and golden. Or making a cake, and when you slice into it, the layers are moist and full of flavor.

Special abilities are a way to take your cooking skills to the next level. They’re like little surprises that elevate your dishes from ordinary to extraordinary. And the best part is, they’re within your reach, waiting to be unlocked!

    How to Play the Game

So, here’s what you do. The game has different rounds called days. Each day, you have a card in your hand. This card determines the order in which you get to play for that day.

On your turn, you have two options: you can either choose a new card for your recipe or pick up cards that you discarded earlier to restock your pantry. Finally, you refill the recipe book.

    The Order of Turns

Now, at the start of each day, you have to select one card from your hand and place it face-down in front of you. This card is your time card for the day. Once everyone has done that, we all turn our time cards over at the same time.

The numbers printed on these cards decide the order of turns for the day. The player with the earliest time goes first, and the player with the latest time goes last. You can also use visual cues, like turn order cards, to help with the order.

Note: Hey there! Just so you know, the recipe book doesn’t get restocked after you take your turn, which means that players who go first will have more options than those who go later.

Alright, so on your turn, here’s what you gotta do: first, you have to get rid of your time card by putting it in your discard pile. After that, you can choose to either fill or restock.

    Fill

If you decide to fill, you need to play one or more cards from your hand. The ingredients shown on the left side of those cards have to match all the requirements listed on one of the recipe cards in the recipe book.

Once you’ve done that, you have to put all the cards you played into the discard pile and grab the fulfilled recipe card and put it in your hand.

Note: Just a heads up, you can’t use the time card anymore once you discard it. It can’t be used to fulfill a recipe.

Have you ever noticed that some recipes have a unique icon? It’s pretty cool because it means that there’s something special about those recipes. These special abilities are explained in the rulebook’s Special Abilities section.

    Restock

When you choose to restock, you get to pick up all of the cards in your discard pile and put them back into your hand. It’s like getting a second chance with those cards!

But that’s not all – you also get to reserve one of the cards in the recipe book. By putting it back on top of the deck, you prevent other players from using that recipe today. It’s a clever move to gain a competitive edge!

    Special Abilities

Some cards have special ability icons on them. These icons come into play as soon as you fill the recipe on that card. It adds a whole new dimension to the game and can give you an exciting advantage!

Bonus fill. If you want, you can make another recipe to get an extra card. Just remember, you can only use ingredients from the cards you just played.

Bonus restock. When you use this action, you get all of your discarded cards back into your hand.

Note: This action is different from a regular restock because you can’t choose a recipe to reserve.

    Advanced Cards

Once you know how to play the game, you can add the 10 advanced recipe cards to the deck. These cards have two new special abilities.

Something’s wrong. Once you get this card, you have to make a decision right away. Take one of your cards and get rid of it. It can be any card – from your hand or from the pile of cards you’ve already played.

Arrive early, and you’ll have an advantage. It’s not like other special abilities that give an immediate boost. This one replaces the time on the card you claim. During the turn order phase, you can choose this card along with your time card and subtract one hour from the total time.

When all players have finished their turns, it’s time to replenish the recipe book. Take cards from the top of the recipe deck until there are enough cards for each player, plus one more.

If there aren’t enough cards to fill the recipe book by the end of the day, the game ends. But if there are enough cards left, a new day starts with the turn order phase.

At the end of the game, points are awarded in the following manner:

    • To start, gather all the cards you currently have in your hand and discard pile.
    • Next, take a look at each card and pay attention to the victory point symbol located at the bottom left. For each symbol you find, you earn 1 point.
    • But here’s where things get even more interesting. If you happen to have a complete set of 3 different victory point symbols, you score an additional 2 points. It’s like a bonus for having a diverse collection of symbols!

Picture this: I’m Claire, and I’m racking up 9 points for winning those coveted victory point symbols. And that’s not all! I’ve also managed to complete 2 sets, giving me an extra 4 points. So, in total, I’ve got an impressive 13 points!

Guess what happens next? Well, the player with the most points gets crowned as the Star Baker! Imagine the glory!

But, hey, what if there’s a tie? Well, in that case, the player who has the most total cards in their collection becomes the winner. And if there’s still a tie? Well, then, my friend, it’s a shared victory. Teamwork makes the dream work!

    But wait, there’s more!

Okay, so picture this worst-case scenario: none of us can (or wants to) complete any of the recipes in the recipe book. Yikes! In that case, we have a fallback plan. If everyone chooses the restock action for two consecutive days, we’ll collect all the cards in the recipe book and shuffle them back into the recipe deck. It’s a reset button!

Now, what if there’s a tie for turn order?

Well, that’s a rarity, but it can happen if multiple players use those crafty arrive early cards. In that scenario, the player who played the most arrive early cards takes their turn first. Talk about strategy!

Have you ever wondered what happens when a player doesn’t have any cards to play for turn order? Well, don’t worry, because even if a player finds themselves in this situation, they will always have at least one card in their hand. This is thanks to the previous turn’s fill or restock action.

However, if a player only has arrive early cards left in their hand, things change a bit. In this case, they will reveal this card as their time card, which means they will play last. They will also be required to take a restock action.
