I want to let you in on a little secret: only certain numbers matter when playing a dice game. In fact, the only time a number counts is if you roll three or more of the same number at once.

Of course, there are other combinations of numbers that can earn you points too. For instance, if you manage to roll a specific combination in a single turn, you’ll score some points.

Here’s something important to bear in mind: you can’t add up numbers from different rolls. Let’s say you rolled a 5 and set it aside for 50 points. Then, on your next roll, you get two more 5s, which would be worth 100 points. Unfortunately, you can’t combine them to make three 5s for a whopping 500 points. Each roll has to be scored individually.

Oh, and by the way, after every roll, there are some dice that you’ll need to remove from play. They won’t count towards your score in subsequent rolls.

Getting Started

Let’s start by setting up the game. First, choose someone to be the scorekeeper. They will keep track of the scores. Grab a piece of paper and a pencil to write down the scores. Now, everyone takes turns rolling one die. The player with the highest roll gets to go first, and then play continues in a clockwise direction.

How to Play the Game

• When it’s my turn, I put the 6 Dice in the Dice Cup and roll them. If any of the Dice roll off the playing area, I roll them again.
• After each roll, I set aside the Dice that are worth points and roll the rest of them. I have to take out at least one Die after each roll and keep track of the points I earn in that turn.
• If I’m lucky and manage to set aside all 6 Dice, I get to roll them all again and add to my running total.
• If I can’t set aside any Dice after a roll, that’s called a Farkle. It means I lose all the points I earned in that turn, and it’s the next player’s turn. I can Farkle on my first roll or when I roll the remaining Dice.
• To score for the first time, I need to have a running total of at least 500 points before I stop rolling.

After you roll the dice and score 500 points or more, you have the option to stop rolling and add your current points to your total score. Once your points are recorded, they are safe and cannot be taken away from you.
