Here’s What You Need

To play Fanorona, you’ll need a game board with a grid that’s 5 by 9. You also need 22 counters in two different colors, like white and black. And of course, you’ll need the instructions to learn how to play.

What’s the Goal?

The objective of Fanorona is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces. It’s like a battle between the two players to see who can conquer the most.

How to Play

So, how do you play this awesome game? Well, it’s pretty simple. The players take turns, starting with the player who controls the White pieces. There are two types of moves you can make: non-capturing moves, called “paika,” and capturing moves. Can you use strategy and skill to outsmart your opponent?

  • A paika move involves moving a piece to any adjacent point along a drawn line.
  • A capturing move requires the removal of one or more pieces from the opponent. It is mandatory to capture if the player has the opportunity.

There are two types of capturing moves: approach and withdrawal.

Approach: If a player moves one of their pieces to a point, and the next point on the same line is occupied by an opponent’s piece, that piece is captured. Additionally, all subsequent opponent pieces on the same line are also captured (as long as there is no interruption by an empty point or one of the player’s own stones).

Capturing opponent’s pieces

If I can perform both an approach and a withdrawal at once, I have to decide which one to play.

After capturing a piece, I have the option (but not the obligation) to continue making more captures. However, there are some limitations:

  • I am not allowed to visit the same spot twice during my turn.
  • I am not allowed to make two consecutive moves in one direction. This situation can arise if I perform an approach followed by a withdrawal.
