Welcome to the Pearlbrook game rules!

In the enchanting land of Everdell, a new adventure awaits you in the tranquil waters of Pearlbrook. Here, I will guide you through the rules of this captivating game, so you can dive right in and start exploring its vibrant and transformative world.

Set Up

Before we embark on our journey, let’s make sure everything is set up and ready to go.

To begin, I will need the Everdell base game. Once you have that, open the box and find the Pearlbrook components. You will need to add the new Pearlbrook board to the base game board, making sure they fit together seamlessly.

Next, shuffle the event cards from both the base game and Pearlbrook expansion, and create a single deck with them. Draw four cards from this deck and place them face up on the designated area of the Pearlbrook board.

Don’t forget to give each player a Riverfolk Ambassador, a Pearl, and a Starting Location card. These location cards have important special abilities that will aid you in your quest.

Lastly, each player should have a player board, a hand of three Meadow location cards, and a deck of critter and construction cards.

Objective

The goal of Pearlbrook is to score the most points by constructing buildings, recruiting meadow and river cards, and accomplishing riverfolk objectives. As you explore the game, you will uncover the myriad of ways to earn points and strategize your path to victory.

Gameplay

Now that everything is set up, let’s dive into the gameplay.

In Pearlbrook, each player will take turns, following a specific sequence of actions. On your turn, you will have two options: take a worker or take a character card.

If you choose to take a worker, you can place one of your workers on an empty worker spot on the board. This allows you to perform various actions, such as gaining resources or drawing cards.

Alternatively, you can take a character card from the main deck or the Pearlbrook deck. These cards have unique abilities and will enhance your strategy as you progress through the game.

During the game, you will also have the opportunity to travel to Pearlbrook, where you can recruit river cards, obtain pearls, and construct wondrous buildings. These actions will not only earn you points but also unlock new possibilities and opportunities.

Once you have completed your turn, play passes to the next player, and the cycle continues.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You now have a solid understanding of the rules and mechanics of Everdell: Pearlbrook. From here, the adventure is yours to explore and discover. So gather your friends, dive into the magical world of Everdell, and may your journey through Pearlbrook be as enchanting as the realm itself!

Deep below the shiny surface of the Pearlbrook River, there is a secret community of water creatures patiently waiting. You will be sending your own amphibious Ambassador on important missions to establish connections and trade valuable information and resources with these river dwellers.

In return for your efforts, you will have the opportunity to collect a new and precious resource: pearls. By gathering enough pearls, you can create magnificent Wonders and Adornments that will make your city the pride of Everdell!

To start the game, you will have a frog Ambassador that you can use to visit one of the 4 River Destinations on the River board. However, before you can visit a destination, make sure your city meets the requirements listed for that particular location. The first player who visits a destination and unveils it will immediately receive 1 pearl. Additionally, if they fulfill the requirements of the revealed card, they may earn an extra pearl.

Hey there! So, when you start the game, you’ll have 2 Adornment cards. These cards are pretty cool because they cost 1 pearl to play and give you a special ability right away. But that’s not all! Each Adornment also comes with a unique end game bonus that’s based on different things in your city.

Now, here’s something to keep in mind: Pearlbrook is an expansion that adds more cards and complexity to Everdell. If you’re playing with Pearlbrook, it’s best to leave out the Legends Expansion, any Extra! Extra! cards, Rugwort cards, or any other expansion stuff. That way, you’ll get the most out of your Pearlbrook experience.

1. Place the River board to the side of the main board. Oh, and don’t forget to put those captivating pearl tokens on the Shoal spot on the board. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on those!

There you have it! The alluring expansion pack that will elevate your Everdell experience. Get ready to embark on a journey like no other. Your adventure awaits!

In the game, we start by shuffling the River Destination Citizen cards and setting aside 2 of them, without looking. We do the same with the Location River cards. Then we shuffle the 4 cards together, without looking, and place 1 facedown on each of the 4 spots on the River board. We also put 1 pearl on top of each of these facedown River Destination cards. The rest of the River cards go back in the box.

Next, we shuffle the Adornment cards and deal 2 facedown to each player. The rest of the cards go back to the box, without looking. Players can look at these cards anytime. They don’t count towards the card hand limit.

When we set up the Special Events, we make sure to include at least 1 Pearlbrook Special Event.

Finally, we give each player a frog Ambassador that matches the color of their workers.

The Mysterious River

Imagine exploring underwater realms and connecting with the fascinating waterfolk of Pearlbrook as an amphibious Ambassador. You can dive deep into the river and unlock amazing opportunities, including the highly coveted pearls. These precious treasures will empower you to craft exquisite Adornments and construct magnificent Wonders in your flourishing city.

But how do you embark on this watery adventure? Let me show you!

A Journey to the River

In order to access the River and uncover its secrets, you need to meet certain requirements within your city. Here’s what you need:

  • At least 3 green Production cards must be part of your city. These cards are essential for your expedition to the River.

This River Destination is a prestigious location, available exclusively to those who meet the green Production card threshold. It’s time to take the plunge and embrace the mysteries that await you beneath the surface!

Shoal

If you want something different for your next adventure, you should check out the Shoal instead of going to a River Destination. It’s like a hidden gem that not everyone knows about. The best part is, all it takes is 2 resources and getting rid of 2 cards to get a shiny pearl. It’s a secret spot that everyone can enjoy.

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that any location with this super special symbol can only be visited by an Ambassador, not a worker like me. But here’s the cool part: if you visit a River Destination card, your Ambassador will be deployed there, just like a worker! How awesome is that?

Remember to bring back your Ambassador when we prepare for Season action with the workers. Oh, and by the way, your Ambassador can’t be used as a regular worker. They have a special mission!

All About River Destination Cards

Listen up! The first time you visit a River Destination card, you get to take the pearl that’s on top and then flip the card over. Exciting, right? And guess what? If you meet the requirements on the card, you can go ahead and do what it says to get some awesome rewards!

You can visit any River Destination card, whether it’s already revealed or still a mystery, as long as you meet the requirements and no other player’s Ambassador is already there. It’s like a race to explore new places!

When we play River Citizens, we have to make some tough decisions. In order to score points and collect pearls, I’ll have to get rid of some cards from my hand. It’s a sacrifice I’ll have to make.

And then there are the River Locations. They offer great rewards, but to access them, I have to spend a point token and a specific resource. It’s like a trade-off, giving something up to get something better.

Adornments

When it’s your turn, you can choose to play one of the Adornment cards that you received when the game started. This will be your action for the turn. Each Adornment card requires 1 pearl to play and doesn’t take up a spot in your city.

As soon as you play an Adornment card, its ability on the top half takes effect right away. The bottom half of the card shows how many points the Adornment is worth at the end of the game, based on different aspects of your city.

Adornment cards don’t count towards the limit of cards you can hold in your hand. After playing a card, you don’t draw a new one. You have the option to play both Adornment cards that you received, but not on the same turn.

Wonders

When it’s my turn, I can choose to build one of the Wonders by placing one of my workers on a Wonder spot. To build the Wonder, I need to pay the specified amount of resources and pearls, as well as discard a certain number of cards from my hand. I can’t use any special abilities from my cards to help me build the Wonders.

Once I’ve paid the cost, I take the model of the Wonder and place it next to my city. When the season changes, I’ll get my worker back.

At the end of the game, any Wonders I’ve built will earn me points based on their listed value. I can build more than one Wonder, but each Wonder can only be built by one player.

Pearls

If I have any pearls left at the end of the game, each pearl is worth 2 points.

Solo Rules

Guess what? Rugwort is back again! Yup, you heard it right. Just when we thought we had chased away that troublemaker, he’s returned to Everdell with a vengeance. Rumor has it that he’s after the riches and beauty of Pearlbrook this time. But fear not, because I’m here to tell you how we can stop him.

Alright, let’s talk about the solo version of the Pearlbrook expansion. First things first, we’ll be using the same rules as the base game, including the three levels of difficulty over the course of three years. But there are a few extra rules we need to be aware of.

The Setup

Now, in addition to setting up Rugwort’s crew, we also need to place his Ambassador. The Ambassador is a pretty big deal, so we have to be careful. During setup, we’ll roll a die to determine where the Ambassador will go. It’s a bit random, but that’s all part of the fun:

I dive headfirst into the River Destination, eager to claim the precious pearl it holds. With a swift motion, I turn the River Destination upside down and deliver another pearl to Rugwort. I’m one step closer to victory, and this River Destination is now out of play.

How to Play

To proceed with the gameplay, follow the solo rules in the base game. However, keep in mind the following additions:

  • Whenever you play an Adornment card, don’t forget to reward Rugwort with 5 point tokens.
  • During Rugwort’s Prepare for Season actions, move his Ambassador down the river. If he reaches the last destination, move him back to the first destination. As Rugwort explores a new, unrevealed destination, he gains the pearl waiting there. I flip the card over and give him an extra pearl. However, if the destination is already revealed, he only receives 1 pearl.

Once I finish the game, Rugwort will get to work on building Wonders. He needs to pay pearls to build them, and he’ll always choose the Wonder that’s worth the most points. Sometimes he might even build more than one Wonder if he has enough pearls! Let me give you an example: let’s say Rugwort has 6 pearls at the end of the game. You managed to build Starfall’s Flame, which is worth 25 points, but you didn’t build any other Wonders. Rugwort uses 3 of his pearls to build Sunblaze Bridge, which is worth 20 points, and the Mistrise Fountain, which is worth 15 points. He’ll earn those points for each Wonder he builds.

Now, if you want an extra challenge, you can try these optional rules:

1. Every Prosperity card that Rugwort plays will be worth 5 points instead of 3. So keep an eye out for those!

2. Rugwort also scores 2 points for each space in your city where you haven’t played a card. Make sure to fill up your city to prevent him from scoring too many points.

3. During Rugwort’s Prepare for Season action, he’ll immediately achieve the leftmost special Event. Pay close attention to the Events and plan accordingly.

These additional challenges will make the game even more exciting and strategic. Have fun and good luck!
