The Rules of the Everdell Game

Setting up the Game

First things first, let’s get the game set up. Take out the game board and place it in the middle of your playing area. Shuffle the Event Cards deck and reveal four of them face-up. Put the remaining Event Cards back in the box – we’ll come back to those later.

Next, shuffle the Special Event mini-cards and place them, face-up, next to the Event Cards. Then, draw the top five Forest mini-cards and place them, face-up, on the first five spaces of the play area. These Forest cards will be available for players to explore and gather resources from.

Each player now chooses a color and takes the matching Critter cards, Occupation cards, and Construction cards. They also receive the corresponding Resource tokens and a player aid card. Lastly, they place their player marker on the “0” space of the initiative track, which determines the turn order.

Playing the Game

Now we’re ready to dive into the gameplay! The object of Everdell is to score the most points by constructing buildings and inviting adorable Critters to your city. The game is played over four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

During each season, you will take turns performing actions. On your turn, you have two options: either place a Critter or Occupation card from your hand onto your player tableau, or retrieve all your workers from the field. To play a card, you’ll need to pay the required resources shown on the card.

As the game progresses, you can construct new buildings and gather more Critters and Occupations. Some cards have special abilities that can give you extra resources, victory points, or other advantages.

Throughout the game, you’ll want to keep an eye on the Event Cards and Special Event mini-cards. These cards provide additional goals and objectives that can earn you extra points, so it’s important to plan your moves accordingly.

Scoring and Final Thoughts

After the Winter season ends, it’s time to tally up your points and determine the winner. Each player receives points for their constructed buildings, Critters, and Occupations. You also score extra points for completing Special Events and meeting certain conditions on the Event Cards.

But remember, building a successful city requires both strategy and a bit of luck. While planning your moves and gathering resources, keep an eye on your opponents’ progress. Is there a card they desperately need? Consider taking it first to hinder their plans.

First, let’s get started setting up the game. I’ll guide you through each step. It’s really simple!

Step 1: Place the board on the table. After that, take the Ever Tree and place it on the stump at the top of the board.

Step 2: Time to organize! Take the twigs, resin, pebbles, and berries and make piles along the bank of the river. Then, grab the point tokens and occupied tokens and place them beside the board.

Step 3: Now, let’s make things interesting. Shuffle the Forest cards and put them on the forest clearings. If you have two players, use 3 cards. For three or four players, use 4 cards. Any leftover cards can go back in the box.

Step 4: It’s time to mix things up a bit with the Event tiles. Place the 4 basic Event tiles along the river. Then, shuffle the special Event cards and place 4 of them on the lower branches of the Ever Tree. The rest of the special Events can go back in the box.

Step 5: Almost there! Shuffle the main deck of cards and randomly choose 8 of them. Place these cards faceup in the Meadow. Finally, put the deck inside the Ever Tree.

Okay, so here’s how the game works. First, we all pick a color and get two workers of that color. Simple enough, right? Now, the first player grabs 5 cards from the deck, the second player takes 6, the third player gets 7, and the fourth player gets 8.

Next, we each put four more workers on the Ever Tree. One worker goes on spring, another on summer, and two on autumn. Make sure your workers are on the upper branches, okay?

Now, before we start playing, we need to figure out who goes first. It’s actually the player who’s the most humble! Who would’ve thought? So, let’s see who that is and get this game going.

Alright, let’s jump into the game. We’ll take turns going clockwise and each turn, you get to choose one action from the following options. You can do them in any order, but remember, only one action per turn!

1. Place a Worker

Now, here’s where your workers come into play. They’re super important for building up your city and making it thrive.

You can send them to different spots in Everdell to gather resources, get more cards, host events, or maybe even go on an adventure! The locations in Everdell can be divided into two types: exclusive spots and shared spots (you’ll see a ring around them). Only one worker can visit an exclusive spot, but multiple workers, even if they have the same color, can visit a shared spot.

When I want to go to a place, I simply put one of my workers on any symbol that’s available. This way, I can get the resources or do the action that’s listed there. The best part is that once I place my worker, it stays there until I decide to bring them back by using the Prepare for Season action.

Example: When I put one of my workers on the second basic action space, I get two twigs and draw a card from the deck.

You can either place it on a Destination card in your own city or on a Destination card in another city with the same symbol. If you choose the latter, the owner of that Destination will get a point token from the supply. Sounds simple, right?

Events

You can also assign one of your workers to any available basic or special Event to complete it. To complete an Event, you need to fulfill all the requirements listed on the Event card and pay any necessary resources when you assign your worker there. Keep in mind that only one player can complete each Event. You can only assign a worker to an Event if you’re able to complete it.

Once you complete an Event, place it next to your city for scoring at the end of the game.

Now let’s talk about the Haven.

Hey there! The Haven is a pretty cool place. It’s like a big clubhouse where everyone can hang out and work together. You can bring as many friends as you want, even if they have the same favorite color.

When you go to the Haven, you have the power to decide what cards you want to get rid of from your hand. You can toss away as many as you like. But here’s the best part: for every 2 cards you toss, you get to pick 1 resource of your choice. It’s like getting a reward for decluttering your hand!

The Adventure Begins

In the fall, you can send a worker on a journey. But first, you have to get rid of cards equal to the points shown on the Journey location you choose. The 5-point, 4-point, and 3-point locations are separate, while the 2-point location is shared. The worker you send out will be worth the listed points at the end of the game.

Next, you can play a card. It costs you the requirements listed on the card from the general supply. You can play a card from the Meadow or from your hand.

You’ll be placing these cards in front of you to build your city. The cards in the game come in two types: Critters and Constructions. You can have multiple copies of any Common card in your city, but you can only have one copy of each Unique card.

Now, let’s talk about Constructions.

When playing the Critter card, you have two options. First, you can pay the cost in berries to play the card. Alternatively, if you already have the Construction listed on the top left of the Critter card in your city, you can play the Critter card without spending any berries.

It’s important to note: If you choose to play a Critter card for free by using the related Construction, you must place an “occupied” token on the Construction. Remember, you can only do this once per Construction.

City

Hey there! Let’s talk about your city. It’s like your personal little playground with 15 special spaces for cards. Yep, that’s right! Each card takes up one of those spaces. Now, here’s a tip for you: it’s best to arrange your cards in three rows, with five cards in each row. That way, your city will look super organized and ready for action! Oh, and don’t worry about event cards – they don’t count towards your 15 card limit. So go ahead and make your city a vibrant and bustling place!

If you’re entitled to draw more cards and you’re already at the maximum, you’ll have to settle for eight and no more. And if you find yourself in a position where you need to give cards to an opponent but their hands are full, ditch the cards instead.

When a Meadow card is played, we have a little ritual to follow. As soon as it hits the table, replace it with a fresh card from the draw pile. But here’s some food for thought: if an ability grants you the power to draw cards from the Meadow, first draw all the cards you’re entitled to, and only then replenish the Meadow with new ones.

Oh, and one more thing – if the deck ever empties out, don’t panic! Just mix up the discarded cards and make a brand new deck. That way, the game can keep going.

Here’s the deal: You can collect specific resources or points from the supply when you ‘Gain.’ However, if you want to get those resources, you’ll have to ‘Pay’ by returning some of your own resources to the supply.

Pay: You need to put the specified resources from your own supply back into the general supply.

Get Ready for the Changing Seasons

Imagine a game that captures the essence of the changing seasons, starting from the tail end of winter and ending as the next winter rolls around. That’s exactly what you’ll find in this captivating game.

Before you can dive into the delights of each new season, there’s a crucial step you must take: preparing for what’s to come. This is where the Prepare for Season action comes into play, serving as the perfect transition from one season to the next.

But when exactly can you perform the Prepare for Season action? Well, it’s simple. You can only do so once you’ve finished placing all your hardworking population of workers.

Now, let’s dive deeper into the mechanics of this action. When you choose to Prepare for Season, it’s all about you. You bring back all your deployed workers, giving you a chance to regroup and strategize for the upcoming trials and triumphs of the next season.

When spring arrives, you get an exciting boost: a new worker joins your team and all of your green Production cards come to life in your city.

Hey there! Guess what? When summer rolls around, the gang gains a new member! Pretty cool, right? Unfortunately, we won’t be producing anything during this season, but don’t worry, those green cards you’ve been eyeing will still work their magic right away if you play them. Plus, here’s a little bonus for you – when you’re getting ready for summer, you can grab up to 2 Meadow cards to add to your collection. How’s that for a sweet deal?

In autumn, I get 2 more workers and all my green Production cards in my city become active.

When I’m getting ready for the next season, new workers from the Ever Tree join my growing city. I get a worker that matches my city and activate the bonus listed for the next season.

The Game Ends

When I can’t do any more actions or simply don’t want to, that’s it, the game is finished for me and I have to pass. Once I’ve passed, I can’t receive any more cards or resources. If there are cards or resources that need to be given to me and all other players have passed, those cards or resources are discarded instead.

If any players haven’t finished yet, they keep playing until all the players have passed. Then we add up all the points to figure out the winner.

The easiest way to do this is by adding up the base value of each card first, and then coming back to add up the point tokens, bonuses from the purple Prosperity cards, Journey points, and Events.
