Escape Plan: Two Player Rules
Introduction
Hey there! Are you ready to dive into the thrilling world of Escape Plan? If you’ve got a buddy by your side and you’re both itching for some adrenaline-fueled excitement, then you’re in the right place. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the rules specifically designed for two players. Strap in and get ready for the escape of a lifetime!
Gearing Up
First off, let’s make sure you’re all set to go. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Escape Plan base game (make sure it’s nearby!)
- Two-player character boards
- A small token to represent each character’s current location
Now that you’ve got everything ready, let’s take a closer look at how the game works when it’s just the two of you.
Playing the Game
Alright, let’s get down to business. The objective of Escape Plan is to, well, escape! You and your partner are cunning thieves trapped in a city filled with cops. Your goal is to collect as much loot as you can and find your way out before the heat is on.
The game is played over a series of rounds, and each round consists of the following phases:
Phase 1: Plan
During the Plan phase, you and your partner will have the opportunity to strategize your moves. Discuss your options, plan your route, and decide on the best course of action. Communication is key here, so make sure to keep the conversation flowing!
Phase 2: Action
Once you’ve hammered out your plan, it’s time to put it into action. Each round, you’ll take turns moving your characters through the city, searching for loot, and avoiding the ever-watchful eyes of the police. Be careful, though – one wrong move could land you in handcuffs!
Phase 3: Cleanup
After all the action, it’s time to clean up the mess. During the Cleanup phase, you’ll resolve any lingering effects, discard used cards, and prepare for the next round. This is your chance to regroup and get ready for another daring escape.
Winning the Game
To win Escape Plan, you and your partner must accumulate enough loot to retire in style. The more loot you collect, the better your chances of securing a comfortable and luxurious retirement. But remember, time is of the essence! You’ll need to plan your moves carefully and execute your heists with precision if you want to make it out before it’s too late.
Conclusion
Now that you know the basic rules for playing Escape Plan with two players, it’s time to gather your partner and embark on an epic adventure. Remember, communication and teamwork are the keys to success. So put on your disguises, grab your loot bags, and get ready for the escape of a lifetime!

When we play a 2-player game, there’s an extra character, Sandra the Police Inspector, controlled by the game itself. She adds an interesting twist to the game.
- In Phase 1, Sandra doesn’t earn any money.
- In Phase 2, each player gets to place 2 City tiles on the board. Sandra doesn’t count as a player for this.
- In Phase 4, Sandra’s turn order is determined by her Notoriety, just like any other player.
- In Phase 5, Sandra takes an Action in the normal turn order.
It’s important to note that Sandra is considered to be a Police Officer. So, if you want to avoid the Police Officers, you should consider Sandra as an additional Police Officer who can be of any type you choose.
Sandra also has the ability to visit closed businesses if the corresponding card comes out. Additionally, at night and dawn, Sandra can use her Extra Tokens if she has any.
Note: After I take a Contact card in a 2-Player game, I slide all Contact cards to the right and fill any gaps. Then, I draw a new card and place it in the leftmost position of the display. The same process applies when Sandra takes Contact cards.
Setup
When I play a 2-player game, I need to follow these additional setup instructions:
- First, I choose a player color that is not already in use for this game. Sandra, a game-controlled 3rd player, will use this color.
- Next, I place the Inspector, which represents Sandra, on the Hospital tile.
- Then, I put Sandra’s Notoriety marker on one of the bottom spaces of the Notoriety track.
- I place Sandra’s Turn order marker in position 3 on the turn order track.
- Finally, I put 4 of Sandra’s Notoriety cubes and 9 of her Income cubes next to the Game board. These will be used during the game.
Take the Inspector cards, shuffle them, and place them face down as the Inspector deck next to the Game board.
Now it’s your turn, Sandra! When it’s your turn, you always move, never rest.
Step 1: Travel
One by one, reveal cards from the Inspector deck until you find a card showing a Location that is currently in the city. Move Sandra directly to that location – she can move as much as she wants!
Exception: If you come across an Exit card for an open exit, ignore it. Sandra only moves to closed exits.
Step 2: Avoid
Since Sandra is a Police Officer herself, she doesn’t have to worry about this step. She can ignore it.
Step 3: Visit
If there are any other players at Sandra’s location, her Notoriety increases following the normal rules.
Whenever I make a notable move, I add a Notoriety cube on top of my Notoriety marker. If I lose Notoriety, I place a Notoriety cube below the marker. Simple as that.
Then, it’s time to follow the instructions on my card.
Once all the steps are completed, we remove that card from the game. I don’t like going to the same place twice. The cards that we skipped during the TRAVEL step go back to the deck and get shuffled. We don’t have a Discard Pile here.
Now, let me tell you about my cards.
The Places I Do Business:

- Hey there! I just scored 1 Notoriety point. Pretty cool, huh?
- I’m gonna put one of my cubes right over here on the white hex of this business. Oh, and if this is the second cube anyone’s put here, the building closes down.
- Guess what? I get to chuck the two Contact cards on the right (back to the game box, of course). If those cards happen to have an Extra Action disc, it’s mine!
- Oh, and if I’ve already been to a group of businesses this turn, I get an extra action. Sweet!
Safe Houses:

Let me tell you what happens to Sandra:
First, Sandra loses 1 Notoriety. It’s like her reputation gets a little hit.
Then, we put one of Sandra’s cubes in the red hex of the Safe House. It’s like she’s marked somehow.
Next, we randomly discard one key from that Safe House. We take it out of the game.
And we also randomly discard one Fixer tile. It’s like Sandra loses a useful tool.
But wait, if this turn Sandra has visited all 3 Safe Houses, she gets an extra action! It’s like a bonus for her hard work.
Now, let’s talk about the stores:
HTML Markup:
- Sandra loses 1 Notoriety.
- Place one of Sandra’s cubes in the red hex of the Safe House.
- Discard one key at random from that Safe House (return it to the box).
- Discard one Fixer tile at random (return it to the box).
- If, this turn, Sandra has now visited all 3 Safe Houses, she gets an Extra Action disc
Stores:

Let me tell you a story about Sandra and her adventures in the city. Today, I’m going to share with you the choices she made and the consequences that followed. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
In this city, people are always watching. Sandra knew that her actions could either make her popular or bring her down. It was a delicate balance.
One day, Sandra visited four different stores – A, B, C, and D. Each store had its own set of rules and consequences. Let’s see what happened.
Store A: Sandra did something that caught everyone’s attention. Her actions brought her 1 point of Notoriety. People started talking about her, and she became quite known in the area.
Store B: Sandra made a different choice here. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned. She lost 1 point of Notoriety. It seemed like her actions didn’t resonate with the people in this store.
Store C: Sandra took a risk and it paid off. Her actions gained her 1 point of Notoriety. Now she was known in both Store A and Store C.
Store D: Sandra’s actions here had some unexpected consequences. She ended up losing 1 point of Notoriety. It seemed like the people in this store didn’t appreciate what she did.
After visiting the stores, Sandra had to deal with another challenge. She had to get rid of a Locker tile without anyone seeing it. It was a nerve-wracking task. She randomly selected a tile and discarded it without hesitation. For Store D, it was even more challenging. She had to discard a tile from every stack of Locker tiles.
Next, Sandra had to make a tough decision. She had to discard the two rightmost Contact cards. These cards were important to her, but she knew she couldn’t keep them all. She said goodbye to the cards, knowing she had to let go. But there was a silver lining. If any of the discarded cards had an Extra Action disc, she got to keep it.
Closed Exits:
And that’s the story of Sandra and her adventure in the city. She made choices, experienced the consequences, and faced challenges along the way.
Remember, every decision we make has an impact. Sometimes it’s positive, and other times it’s negative. But what matters is how we learn and grow from those experiences. So, go out there and make your own choices. Who knows what adventures await?

- I lose 1 point because my Notoriety has decreased.
- I randomly remove one of the Exit tiles from this exit, making sure no one sees it, and put it back in the box.
- I discard the 2 Contact cards on the far right side of my Contact card row, returning them to the game box. If any of the discarded cards have an Extra Action disc, I get to keep that disc.
Changing My Notoriety Level
The number of cubes above and below my Notoriety marker on the Notoriety track determines if my Notoriety level changes. If there is a cube above, my marker moves up, and if there is a cube below, it moves down. If there is one cube above and one cube below, my marker stays in place. After moving my marker, I return all of my Notoriety cubes back beside the game board.
If my Notoriety level passes a certain point, any player with less Notoriety than me moves one Police Officer in my direction following the normal rules.
