Welcome to the Exciting World of Dragon Farkle!
Today, I want to introduce you to the fascinating game of Dragon Farkle. In this game, you will dive into a world filled with dragons and embark on an epic adventure. So, let’s get started and learn the rules!
The Basics of Dragon Farkle
Dragon Farkle is a dice game that is both simple and thrilling. It requires luck, strategy, and a dash of bravery. The goal of the game is to accumulate the highest score possible by rolling different combinations of dice.
Here’s how it works:
To start, you will need a set of six dice. On each turn, you will roll all the dice together. The score is determined by the combinations you get.
Let’s take a closer look at the different combinations:
- Farkle: If you do not roll any combinations that score points, you have Farkled for that turn. Your turn ends, and you lose all the points you have accumulated so far.
- Single Die: If you roll a single dragon die, you earn points equal to the face value of the die. For example, if you roll a dragon die with a value of 3, you earn 3 points.
- Three of a Kind: If you roll three dice with the same value, you earn points equal to the face value of the dice multiplied by 100. For example, if you roll three dice with a value of 2, you earn 200 points.
- Three Pairs: If you roll three pairs of dice, you earn 1500 points.
- Straight: If you roll a sequence of six dice with consecutive values, you earn 1500 points.
- Four of a Kind: If you roll four dice with the same value, you earn points equal to the face value of the dice multiplied by 100. For example, if you roll four dice with a value of 4, you earn 400 points.
- Five of a Kind: If you roll five dice with the same value, you earn points equal to the face value of the dice multiplied by 1000. For example, if you roll five dice with a value of 5, you earn 5000 points.
- Six of a Kind: If you roll six dice with the same value, you earn points equal to the face value of the dice multiplied by 2000. For example, if you roll six dice with a value of 6, you earn 12000 points.
After each roll, you have a choice. You can either stop and keep the points you have earned so far or continue rolling. However, be careful! If you Farkle, you lose all the points you have accumulated during that turn. It’s a risk-reward situation that adds excitement to the game.
Playing the Game
Now that you know the rules, it’s time to start playing Dragon Farkle. Gather your friends and family, grab a set of dice, and get ready for a thrilling adventure. May the luck of the dragons be with you!
In the world of Yon, peace has always been a common theme among its races (except for a few unruly goblin raids). However, this era of tranquility came to an abrupt end when a menacing dragon appeared on the scene.
This terrifying creature wreaked havoc on the locals and their livestock, causing panic and fear to spread like wildfire. It seemed like the end of the line, until a group of unlikely heroes emerged from the most unexpected place – the muddy fields where they had toiled their days away as humble farmers.
Determined to put an end to this reign of terror, these brave souls embarked on a perilous journey, uniting fellow warriors and recruiting allies along the way. With their swords and shields at the ready, they fought their way to the legendary Dragon’s Keep, where the fearsome beast awaited its challengers.
In an epic battle that would be etched into the annals of history, one hero emerged victorious, delivering the final blow that brought down the mighty dragon. The skies cleared, and peace was restored to the land once more – along with an abundance of unmelted cheese, of course. Or so the tale goes…
Components
- 30 Soldier dice
- 1 Event die
- 10 Companion cards
- 20 Magic Item cards
- 5 Player mats
- 1 Dragon
- 5 Damage counters
- A stockpile of Soldier tokens
Object of the Game
To win the game, you need to be the first Wannabe to defeat the dragon! How can you do that, you ask? Well, it’s quite simple. All you need to do is gather an army of at least 5,000 brave soldiers who are willing to follow you on your quest to become the hero of Yon. Oh, and don’t forget, you also get all the rights to publish your heroic tale!
But before we dive into the game, let me explain a few key terms:
Farkle: This is what happens when you can’t score any points on a roll. It’s like spilling hot coffee on your fancy new suit of armor.
Wannabe noun: That’s you and the other players sitting around the table, eager to become heroes in the land of Yon.
Card Types
Recruit: These brave souls have heard about your amazing feats and want to join your cause, fighting alongside you.
You can call upon them whenever you need, except in certain situations.
Magic Item: You can use items whenever you want, unless the card says otherwise. And remember, once you’re done with them, make sure to recycle them. Yon is all about sustainability!
Remember: At the end of your turn, you can only have one Magic Item, unless you have a Sack of Holding.
Getting ready
Alright, here’s what you need to do:
First, grab six dice in your favorite color and a player mat. You’ll want to be prepared!
Now, we need to set up the game. Take the Companion cards and Magic Item cards and shuffle them separately. Put them face down in the middle of the play area to form two decks. If any deck runs out, just shuffle the discard pile and make a new deck.
Don’t forget about the Dragon! Place it near the decks along with three Damage counters. We don’t want any hiccups during the game.
Okay, now for the fun part – let’s get started with Dragon Farkle! We’ll take turns going clockwise, starting with the person who brought the most snacks. Everyone gets a Companion card, which you’ll put face up on your player mat.
Next, each player gets dealt a Magic Item card. You can either put it face down in front of you or you can hold onto it – just make sure it stays hidden from the other players.
Let the Game Begin!
When it’s my turn, I can do one of three things:
- Get more soldiers
- Fight against another player’s army
- Take on the Dragon’s Keep in a Final Battle (but I need at least 5,000 soldiers).
Before I do any of these actions, I have to roll my six Soldier dice and the Event die. If I want to keep going, I can roll again with fewer Soldier dice, but I always roll the Event die. So, what’s the Event die all about? Good question.
The Event die is a special six-sided die. It has a picture of a Dragon, a Rally sign, and four blank sides. I roll it whenever I recruit soldiers, fight other players, or take on the Final Battle.
If you see a Blank side, nothing happens – it’s as if the dice didn’t roll at all, just another everyday occurrence in Yon.
When the Dragon side shows up on the scoring dice, I need to put aside ALL scoring dice, but I don’t have to put aside any Soldier tokens. The dragon swoops in and devours any soldiers I would have earned from that roll.
After that, I can decide if I want to keep going or if I want to stop.
If the Dragon side comes up during a Farkled roll (meaning no scoring dice were rolled), I managed to escape the dragon’s clutches and can choose to ignore the Farkle and keep going, or I can choose to end my turn.
When the Rally side shows up with scoring dice, a rally occurs for our cause. This lets you pick one of two rewards:
- Double the value of all scoring dice you set aside for that roll.
- Draw a Magic Item from the deck, look at it, and then set it aside facedown.
If the Rally side appears during a roll with no scoring dice, you Farkle as usual (except during the Final Battle, but we’ll get to that later).
Adding Soldiers to the Army
But of course, we need soldiers to face the dragon! Select this action to recruit soldiers into our army. To start, roll all the dice. After each roll, you must put aside at least one scoring die, based on the Soldier table on our player mat.
Hey there! Let me walk you through the important steps of the game. It’s super easy, I promise!
First things first, you need to set aside the correct number of Soldier tokens from the stockpile. These tokens help you keep track of how many soldiers you can add to your army. Just put them in the space above your player mat.
Once you’ve done that, you have two options. You can end your turn and add the Soldier tokens from above your player mat to your army. You can also add one Magic Item that you gained from the Event die. This ends your turn, by the way. Or, you can continue rolling the remaining Soldier dice and the Event die to see if you can recruit more soldiers for your army. It’s up to you!
Now, here’s an important thing to remember. If you scored and you still have some Soldier dice left (even the ones eaten by the Dragon side), you can keep going. Just roll all six Soldier dice and the Event die again. If you’re lucky, you might add more soldiers to what you’ve already rolled. But be careful! If you Farkle, you’ll lose all your points for this turn. Yikes!
When you’re playing the game, if you can’t put aside any dice that give you points, you Farkle! That means you lose all the potential soldiers and magic items you got in that turn. You also have to put back any soldier tokens you had set aside (nobody likes being a Farkler).
Brawling
Brawling in Yon can get pretty intense sometimes, but it wouldn’t be complete without a friendly little pub fight between armies every now and then.
If you choose to brawl, you’ll have the opportunity to steal soldiers from your opponent’s army and recruit fresh soldiers who are inspired by your victory. To get started, you’ll need to pick another Wannabe to fight against.
When you brawl, you’ll roll your Soldier dice and the Event die. Just like in Recruiting, you’ll need to set aside one or more scoring dice based on the Soldier table. Your brawl attack score is determined by the number of soldiers you set aside from the stockpile above your player mat. Remember, these soldiers won’t actually join your army.
Oh, and don’t forget about the Event die! It works the same way as it does in Recruiting. You might lose some soldiers to a dragon, or you could ignore a Farkle roll. You could even double your score or draw some awesome Magic Items!
So here’s what you can do: You have the choice to either end your turn or keep going. If you decide to end it, put the Soldier tokens aside to show your Brawl attack score. Also, any Magic Items you gained should be kept aside for now. Then, it’s the defending Wannabe’s turn to roll. But, if you want to keep going, roll the rest of the dice and see if you can increase your Brawl attack score.
If you can’t set aside any scoring dice during any of your rolls, then you Farkle. That means your Brawl attack score becomes zero and you have to give up any Magic Items you had. Also, remember to put all the Soldier tokens back in the stockpile.
So, here’s the deal. When the attacker is done making their moves or Farkles, it’s time for the defending Wannabe to step up and defend themselves. They only get to roll 5 Soldier dice and the Event die. Easy enough, right? But don’t forget, all the other rules still count. So, when the defending Wannabe decides to call it quits or Farkles, we compare both scores. The one with the highest Brawl attack score is the winner of the Brawl. Simple as that!
When I win a battle, I get to take soldiers from the other army. The number of soldiers I take depends on how much higher my score is than the loser’s. If the loser has enough soldiers, I can take as many as they have left.
But that’s not all! I also get 500 new soldiers from our stockpile. It’s like an extra reward for winning.
And here’s the best part: I can keep one Magic Item that I found during the fight. Magic Items are special objects that give me special powers. But remember, I can only have one Magic Item at the end of each turn, so I have to choose wisely.
Prepare for the Ultimate Showdown
Let’s gear up to defeat the most dangerous threat in Yon.
Choose this option to go head-to-head with the mighty dragon. Victory is yours if you manage to deal three damage to the dragon on your turn.
The dragon awaits you in the lair known as the Dragon’s Keep. To gain entry, you must muster an army of at least 5,000 soldiers at the start of your turn.
In the Final Battle, the Soldier and Event dice come with a twist. The scoring dice now work against you, while only the Rally sides and the Dragon inflict damage upon it.
Farkling takes on a new meaning too. You’ll only Farkle if your roll yields no damage to the dragon and you manage to hang on to all your soldiers (meaning, you don’t roll any scoring dice).
Remember, in the Final Battle, you keep rolling until you either (a) emerge victorious against the dragon, (b) Farkle, or (c) lose your entire army who were devoured by the dragon.
So, here’s how it works: you start by rolling all the dice. What happens next is determined by what you roll on the Event die.
Dragon side – My turn to attack the dragon! I strike with all my might, dealing a single point of damage. The dragon roars in pain as a Damage counter is flipped over to the blood side. But it’s not that simple – I have to take the consequences of my actions. I consult the Soldier table and sadly set aside all my scoring dice, losing a number of soldiers from my army back to the stockpile. It’s a harsh reality, but death is an unfortunate part of battle. With that settled, I can continue my turn and press on towards victory!
Rally side: When I’m on the rally side, I deal two damage to the dragon. I also need to check the Soldier table and put all scoring dice aside. This means I lose the same number of soldiers from my army because they lost their limbs. After that, I can continue my turn.
When I roll a blank side with Scoring Dice, I consult the Soldier table and put aside ALL scoring dice. Unfortunately, this means I lose that quantity of soldiers from my army, sacrificing them to no avail. Even though it’s a bit disheartening, I can still continue my turn.
On the other hand, if I roll a blank side with No Scoring Dice, it’s called Farkle, and my turn comes to an abrupt end.
It’s a bit frustrating, but if I don’t manage to defeat the dragon during my turn, something interesting happens. Due to the dragon’s incredible healing ability, it regains all the damage it had previously received, as if it had just devoured a fresh batch of soldiers.
To reset the battle, I flip over all the Damage counters to their normal side. Interestingly, the dragon always starts a Final Battle without any damage points.
The Unique Rules of the Dragon’s Keep
When I’m in the middle of a Final Battle in the Dragon’s Keep, my turn doesn’t end there. I can try another Final Battle in my next turn, even if I have less than 5,000 soldiers.
But, if I choose to Recruit or engage in a Brawl instead of battling the dragon in my next turn, I have to leave the Dragon’s Keep. If I want to try the Final Battle again, I must gather 5,000 or more soldiers before re-entering.
If my entire army gets wiped out while I’m inside the Dragon’s Keep, something strange happens. On my next turn, I somehow come back to life outside the keep, and I get a new Companion from the deck (the old one finds a new home inside the dragon). But, I still get to keep my Magic Item, if I had one.
Did you know that it’s possible to have more than one Wannabe in the Dragon’s Keep simultaneously? How about that! The first Wannabe who manages to deal 3 damage to the dragon during their turn is the ultimate winner.
Now, here’s an interesting thing to keep in mind: while you’re hanging out in the Dragon’s Keep, your army can’t join any Brawls. Yep, they’re simply too preoccupied with trying to avoid becoming a tasty dragon snack to worry about other armies.
But hey, your Companion abilities will still be active and effective both inside and outside the Dragon’s Keep. For example, regardless of whether you’re in the Keep or not, your Wannabe can send Skree to frighten another Wannabe’s army, no matter where they may be.
A Twist of Legend: The Dragon of Legend Variant
Ever wondered what happens when a dragon is left to its own devices for too long? Well, let me tell you! It tends to turn everything into ruins. There was this one dragon, you see, who completely decimated a quaint little town called Dale. And guess what? That’s where the new variant comes in!
