Dixit: Odyssey Game Rules
Hey there! Welcome to the wonderful world of Dixit: Odyssey! I’m here to guide you through the game and explain all the important rules. So let’s get started!
First off, let me tell you a bit about Dixit: Odyssey. It’s a fantastic party game where your imagination takes center stage. The goal of the game is simple – to inspire and be inspired. Each player takes turns being the storyteller, and the other players must guess which card the storyteller is describing.
Now, let’s dive into the rules. The game begins with each player receiving a hand of cards. These cards are beautifully illustrated with all sorts of colorful and enchanting images. These images will play a key role in the game, so keep an eye on them!
When it’s your turn to be the storyteller, you’ll choose one of your cards and give a clue related to the image on it. But here’s the twist – your clue should be ambiguous, something that could apply to multiple cards. This is where your creativity comes into play! You want to give a clue that’s neither too easy nor too difficult. It’s all about striking that perfect balance.
After you’ve given your clue, the other players will select a card from their own hands that they think matches the clue. These chosen cards, along with your card, are shuffled and laid out on the table for everyone to see. Now comes the exciting part – it’s time for everyone to vote on which card they think is yours!
Once the votes are in, the cards are revealed, and points are awarded. If everyone or no one guesses correctly, you get no points. But if some players guess correctly without everyone getting it right, you and those players earn points. And here’s the catch – if everyone guesses your card, you get no points again. So, it’s not just about giving the perfect clue, but also about understanding the minds of your fellow players.
The game continues with each player taking turns as the storyteller, describing their cards with clues, and everyone else trying to guess. As the game progresses, the points add up, and the player with the most points at the end wins the game!
Dixit: Odyssey is all about creativity, imagination, and a dash of strategy. It’s a game that will have you pondering, laughing, and marveling at the beautiful artwork. So gather your friends, unleash your inner storyteller, and let the enchanting world of Dixit: Odyssey captivate you. Have fun and may your imagination run wild!
Hey there! Let’s get started with the game. First, unfold the scoreboard and place it in the center of the table. Now, each player needs to choose a voting board and place their rabbit token on the 0 space of the scoreboard, using the color that matches their voting board. The 84 image cards should be shuffled, and each player is dealt 6 cards. The remaining image cards form the draw pile.
- If there are 3 to 6 players, each player should take only 1 voting token, regardless of the color.
- If there are 7 to 12 players, each player should take 2 voting tokens, regardless of the color.
Note: Make sure that the image cards in your hand are not visible to the other players.
It’s time to play!
The Storyteller
When we play this game, one person becomes the storyteller. It’s their job to look at the 6 image cards in their hand and choose one to use. They can say anything they want about the image, without showing it to anyone else.
Their words can be short or long, real or made up. It could be a sound or a phrase, or even a line from a poem or a movie. There are so many possibilities!
Now, let’s talk about how we decide who goes first. The first player who comes up with something to say gets to be the storyteller for the first turn.
And now, it’s time for the storyteller to see the image cards…
When we play the game, each of us picks an image card from our set. We choose the card that we think best represents what the storyteller just said. We have to be careful not to let the others see the card we chose.
Then, the storyteller takes the image cards we gave them and mixes them with their own. Finally, they randomly reveal the cards on the scoreboard, placing them on the numbered spaces from 1 to 12.
How do we find the storyteller’s image? We vote!
The task at hand is to uncover the image that belongs to the storyteller. Everyone playing will privately select the image they think is the storyteller’s by using their voting board. It’s important to note that the storyteller does not participate in this voting process. So if I believe image number 3 is the storyteller’s, I’ll place my voting token on space number 3 of my tablet. Once everyone is done voting, we all reveal our voting boards, and the storyteller shares which image is actually theirs.
Remember, players cannot vote for their own image. That’s a big no-no!
If there are 7 or more players, something interesting happens. Each player has the option to cast a second vote for a different image. This way, they can increase their chances of picking the storyteller’s image. They just need to use their second voting token to choose from the remaining exposed images.
Once we’re done with the voting, it’s time to tally up the scores and find out who got it right!
If I manage to find the storyteller’s image, or if no one finds it, the storyteller won’t get any points and everyone else will get 2 points each. On the other hand, if someone else finds the storyteller’s image, both the storyteller and that player will get 3 points. Additionally, each player, apart from the storyteller, will earn 1 bonus point for every vote their image receives, up to a maximum of 3 bonus points.
To keep track of the scores, we move our rabbit token on the score track according to the number of points we’ve earned.
When there are 7 or more players, the scoring rules remain the same. If nobody finds the storyteller’s image, the storyteller doesn’t get any points, and everyone else gets 2 points each. Likewise, if someone finds the storyteller’s image, both the storyteller and that player will score 3 points.
- When I play the game, each player (except for me, the storyteller) gets one bonus point for every vote their image receives, but they can only earn a maximum of 3 bonus points, even if their image gets more than 3 votes.
- If someone only votes for one image and they manage to find the storyteller’s image, they get an extra point.
At the End of the Turn
After each turn, I refill my hand with up to 6 new image cards. If there aren’t enough image cards left in the deck, I shuffle the discarded cards to make a new draw pile.
The next storyteller for the next turn is the player to my left. The rotation goes clockwise for the rest of the game.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player reaches 30 points. The player with the most points overall at the end of the turn wins the game.
3 Player Game
Instead of having six image cards in your hand, you should have seven. As a player (except for the storyteller), you need to submit two image cards instead of just one. This means that five image cards are always displayed, and your task remains the same – to identify the storyteller’s image.
Dixit Party – for 6 to 12 players
Getting Ready
Here’s what you need to do: unfold the scoreboard and put it in the middle of the table. Choose a voting board and put your rabbit on the 0 space on the scoreboard. The dealer will shuffle the 84 image cards and give each player 5 cards.
The rest of the image cards make up the draw pile. Each player gets a green voting token. One player, who will be the storyteller for the first turn, gets a red voting token along with their green token. Now, let’s get into the details of the game.
Being the Storyteller
When we play this game, one of us becomes the storyteller for that turn. Before I even look at the image cards in my hand, I have to say something out loud to all of you.
But here’s the twist – what I say doesn’t actually have anything to do with the pictures I have.
Now, let me explain how we decide who gets to be the first storyteller. The player who comes up with something to say first is the one who will be the storyteller for the first round.
Giving the image cards to the storyteller
When we play the game, each of us, including me, the storyteller, will choose an image from our hand that we think best represents what I’ve said.
Then, we pass our chosen images to me, the storyteller. I’ll shuffle them together with my own images and randomly reveal them on the scoreboard in the numbered image spaces from 1 to 12.
Choosing the Most Popular Image: The Vote
Now, each of us (including me, the storyteller) has to secretly vote using our green vote token for the image that we think best matches what I said. If more people vote for the same image, they’ll score more points.
But here’s the twist! I, the storyteller, will also secretly vote for one of the images, but this time using my red vote token. However, any votes that image gets won’t count towards the score.
So, as the storyteller, I need to carefully consider which image to vote for to deny points to as many opponents as possible. And the rest of you should keep this in mind when you vote too! After we’ve all voted, we’ll reveal our voting boards.
As the storyteller, I’ll have used both my green vote token and my red vote token. And by the way, you can vote for your own image if you want!
Scoring
- When we play this game, we all get to vote for the images we like or think are the best. And guess what? Each time someone votes for the same image as me, I get points! I get one point for each person who votes like me, and I can earn up to 5 points in total.
- But here’s the catch: if I vote for the same image that the person who is telling the story picked, I don’t get any points.
- If I’m the only one who voted for a particular image, I don’t score any points either.
End Of The Turn
After we finish a turn, it’s time to get some new image cards. Each player gets to fill their hand with 5 new image cards, and then we pass our hands to the player sitting on our left. The image cards we used in the previous round go in the discard pile.
If there aren’t enough image cards left in the pile for us to refill our hands, we shuffle the discarded image cards to make a new draw pile. And guess who becomes the new storyteller? It’s the player who’s sitting on the left of the previous storyteller.
How the Game Ends
The game will come to a close once every player has had the opportunity to be the storyteller once. The player who has accumulated the most points throughout the game will be declared the winner.
If you prefer a longer game, you have the option to require each player to act as the storyteller multiple times.
Playing with Team Dixit
If you have a larger group of 6, 8, 10, or 12 players, here’s how you can adjust the game:
Getting Set Up
First, let’s set up the game. Unfold the scoreboard and place it in the center of the table. Next, we’ll need to form teams of 2 players. Each team should sit across from each other so they can easily communicate.
Now, each team will need a voting board. Take a voting board and place the rabbit token that matches your team’s color on the 0 space of the scoreboard. Finally, shuffle the 84 image cards and deal 4 cards to each player. The rest of the image cards will be used as the draw pile.
The Role of the Storyteller
The storyteller plays an important role in the game. They will take turns being the storyteller throughout the game. The storyteller will choose an image card from their hand and give a clue or description that relates to the card. They will then place the card face down in front of them.
Passing the Image Cards to the Storyteller
Once I’ve heard the storyteller’s tale, my teammate will give me an image that best captures what was said.
Then, the two of us on each team will decide who will hand over the image to the storyteller. We can discuss our choices, but we have to do it in front of everyone else and we can’t show or describe our own image cards.
Next, the storyteller will mix up the received image cards and reveal them randomly in the numbered spaces on the scoreboard.
Voting and Scoring
When it’s time to vote in the game of Dixit, there’s a rule that neither the player who gave the clue nor the storyteller can participate in the voting process. This rule is in place to keep things fair and balanced. The voting itself follows the basic rules, and it’s important to note that the scoring rules for games with seven or more players do not apply here.
It’s worth mentioning that the storyteller’s teammate is also not allowed to take part in the vote. The idea is to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute and guess the correct answer.
Wrapping Up the Round
When the turn is over, we all get to replenish our hand with up to four new image cards. Now, if there aren’t enough image cards left in the draw pile for us to refill our hand, well, no worries! We just have to shuffle the discarded image cards and create a brand new draw pile.
Oh, and here’s an interesting tidbit for you: the next person to be the storyteller is actually the person sitting on the left-hand side of the previous storyteller. Cool, huh?
The Game’s Grand Finale
Guess what? The game officially ends when every single person has had a turn at being the storyteller. Then the fun begins! The team with the most points, well, they’re declared the big winner!
But hey, if you want to make the game even more epic and have a marathon session, you can totally increase the number of times each player has to step into the storyteller’s shoes. Ultimate bragging rights, am I right?
