To set up the game, follow these steps:

First, place the main game board 1 in the center of the table.

Next, shuffle the 6 starting Wreck Tiles (with a yellow buoy on the back) 2. Then, place one of these tiles face-down on each of the six square diving sites on the game board (marked with the same icon). Finally, flip them face-up.

After that, discard the empty tile.

Then, shuffle the 9 advanced Wreck Tiles (with a red buoy on the back) 3. Place one of these tiles face-down on each of the remaining diving sites on the game board.

Now, place the Dive Site Board, the Diving Bell, and a supply of Victory Points (VP) tokens next to the game board 4.

Finally, put 2 silver, 2 gold, 2 red, 2 green, and 4 purple gems on the indicated space on the game board. This area is the supply area. Then, put the remaining 19 gems (4 black, 4 blue, 7 silver, 3 gold, and 1 red) in the cloth bag.

When you play the game, start by choosing one of the 7 Captain’s Log scenario cards. Place it next to the game board, right below the supply area 6. If you’re new to the game, we recommend starting with the Troubled Waters scenario. As you become more familiar with the game, you can either pick a scenario card at random or play with your favorite one.

• A player board in your color, which goes right in front of you.

• A treasure chest. That’s all yours.

Oh, and just so you know, any unused Starting Crew Member cards are taken out of the game. Bye, bye!

Let’s get ready to play the game! First, we need to shuffle the deck of 30 extra Crew Member cards. Take the deck and place it face down below the $4 slot 9 on the game board. Now, let’s flip over the top 4 cards, one at a time, and put them face up on the row starting with the $1 spot.

These cards make up the Market. If any of them show a colored gem with a symbol that says “+1,” you get to take a matching Gem from the Supply area and add it to the bag.

Okay, now we need to choose a starting player. To do this, let’s pick someone at random. Once we have our starting player, we’ll deal out the Starting Tokens. Starting with the starting player, each player will receive a Token in clockwise order. The starting player gets 0 tokens, then the next player gets 1 token, then 1 token for the next player, then 2 tokens for the following player, and finally 2 tokens for the last player. These tokens can either be used as discounts when hiring extra crew members or as an extra movement when sailing.

How to Play

During my turn, I must choose one of four actions to take: Recruit a Crew Member, Sail, Rest, or Dive.

Note: Whenever I play a card from my hand, I’ll put it face-up to the right of my player board so that everyone else can see it.

When it’s the end of my turn or the dive I’m taking part in is finished, I’ll put those cards face-down on the “rest” area of my player board. I can see what cards are in my face-down pile, but the other players can’t.

When you’re playing the game, you get to choose one Crew Member from the Market. All you have to do is play enough cards from your hand that have the Cash icon on them, and pay the price shown on the game board above the card. The price could be anywhere from $1 to $5. Once you’ve paid, the Crew Member you just recruited becomes part of your hand.

Having Crew Members is really helpful in the game. They can help you earn bonus points when you go diving, protect you from dangers, and even let you travel farther when you use the Sail action (which I’ll explain in a bit). Some of the Crew Members have a second icon on them, either Cash or Propeller. You can play a card with either icon for its effect, but you can’t choose both at the same time.

Remember, you can only hire one new Crew Member during each turn. If you pay more than what the Crew Member costs (let’s say you play a card worth $2 for a Crew Member that costs $1), you lose the extra money.

If you want, you can pay $4 and get rid of all the cards in the market. Then, I’ll place 4 new Crew Member cards face-up, starting with the $1 spot. From these new cards, you can pick any one for free.

Remember to replace the Crew Member you hired with a new one. And don’t forget to put Gems in the bag for all the new cards you reveal. The Gems that were added by the Crew Members you got rid of will still be in the bag.

Keep in mind: There’s no limit to how many cards you can have in your hand. You can hire as many Crew Members as you want throughout the game.

Sail

When I play Crew Member cards with propeller icons, I can move my Boats on the game board following the routes. The number of spaces I move is equal to the number of revealed propeller icons.

I can choose to use some or all of my sail movement and allocate it however I want – on one Boat or split between the two. I can always move through a Wreck Tile without stopping, whether it’s hidden or revealed.

After all the sailing is finished, I need to see where my Boats ended up and then take the following actions.

• If I find myself on a faceup Wreck Tile, I can put my Boat on one of the empty colored scouting spots. This gives me an advantage when I dive in (see Dive below). If all the scouting spots are already taken, I can put my Boat in the blank space in the center of the tile.
• If I find myself on a facedown Wreck Tile, I can flip the Tile over, leave it on the board, and put my Boat on one of the colored scouting spots, as long as it’s available. It’s important to remember that I only discover a new Wreck Tile if I finish my entire move on it, not if I just pass through.
• If I find myself on a Navigational Buoy or an empty diving site, nothing happens. I just continue on with my turn.

It’s worth noting: I can place my two Boats on two different scouting spots of the same Wreck Tile, giving me the advantage of both spots.

So, here’s the deal. When you decide to Recruit or Sail, you have some options with your Starting Tokens. You can either use them as Cash or as a Propeller bonus. It’s up to you.

Now, each token is worth 1. You can use them on their own or combine them with your playing cards. Totally your call. But here’s the catch – once you’ve used the Tokens, they’re out of the game. So, make sure you use them wisely!

Rest

When I think about rest, I can’t help but wonder: what is it exactly? My mind starts to spin as I consider all the different ways people define and understand rest. When you want to refresh your crew in the game, you can shuffle all of the cards in your Resting Crew area and draw the top 5 cards into your hand.

Don’t worry if you only have a few cards in your Resting Crew area. You’re still allowed to take this action and replenish your hand.

Dive

If you have one or more of your Boats on a Wreck Tile, you can take this action. It’s not necessary to have your Boat anchored on one of the scouting spots; being present on the Tile is enough.

If you have Boats on two different Wreck Tiles, you have to decide which one you want to dive at.

When you decide to take the Dive action, you become the dive leader and start the following:

Rush to the Diving Site

To begin the dive, I take the Diving Bell pawn and place it next to the Wreck Tile I want to explore.

If your Boat(s) are on sites neighboring the dive site (i.e. exactly one move away), you can join the dive by moving your Boat(s) to the dive site for free.

Let’s begin with the dive leader. They can bring their second boat over and we’ll continue clockwise around the table. Put the fast-moving boats in the center of the tile. Keep in mind that they can’t go into scouting spots even if there are empty ones.

If you have at least one boat on the Wreck Tile, you automatically take part in the dive. And guess what? You can earn VP (Victory Points) which I’ll tell you all about below.

Go Scuba Diving to Find Treasures

So here’s what happens when I go diving: I grab the Dive Site Board and a cloth bag. I gotta make sure all the Gems from the previous dive are already in the bag.

Then, the fun begins! I start drawing Gems from the bag, one by one, but nice and slow so everyone can see what I’m getting. These Gems, I place them on the Dive Site Board.

Now, after every Gem I draw, I gotta make a decision: should I keep going or should I call it quits? See, if I end up with too many black or blue Gems, I might have to wrap things up early and lose all my precious treasures. But hey, at least I gotta draw at least one Gem before I can bail out.

But here’s the catch – the other players can’t bail out on their own. They just gotta stick with my decision. However, they can play cards to score points or protect themselves from any dangers lurking underwater. They can’t decide how far to push their luck, though.

Remember this: the Red, Gold, and Silver Gems are the real deal. They’re the treasures that divers like me can bring back to the surface for some serious loot.

Hey there, folks! Green Gems are like little treasures that hold a special power. And you know what? Purple Gems are pretty cool too! They might seem worthless, but trust me, they’re actually important. They’re all part of this amazing game where you get to be an adventurer.

When I get my hands on a Green Gem or a Purple Gem, I put it right in the middle of the Dive Site Board. It’s like the heart of the adventure, you know? It’s where all the action happens.

Now, let’s talk about the Black and Blue Gems. These gems are a whole other story! They represent some serious challenges. Like, imagine you’re diving and you come across a sea creature or you run out of oxygen. Yikes! When I draw one of these gems, I put them on the sides of the Dive Site Board that match their color.

But wait, there’s more! The first Black Gem and the first Blue Gem I draw during each dive are just a warning. They don’t actually do anything. Phew! That’s a relief, right?

Every time a blue or black Gem is drawn after the first one of that color, we all have to defend ourselves or come back up to the surface and end our participation.

If you come back up, move your Boat(s) off the Tile and put them next to it. You won’t be able to score any points for Gems anymore, and you can’t play cards when new Gems are drawn. But you’ll still get points for the cards you played up to that point.

You can defend against the dangers by:

• playing a matching blue or black Crew Member card
• using a blue or black scouting spot

If you have a Boat in a black or blue spot on the current Wreck Tile, you can use that positioning once, instead of playing a black or blue card from your hand. Then, put the Boat in the center of the Tile to show that you’ve used the ability.

When diving, I always prioritize protecting myself against dangerous creatures (black hazards) and ensuring I have enough oxygen (blue hazards). These are the most immediate threats that I need to address first. Once I have taken care of these hazards, I proceed to deal with any other potential risks in a clockwise manner, considering each one around the table.

However, it’s important to note that players have the freedom to decide whether or not they want to defend against a hazard. Even if they possess the corresponding protection card, they can choose not to use it. For instance, they might decide to take a hit on their victory points by losing the Gems instead of using a protection card, in order to save it for future use. It’s all about weighing the options and making strategic choices.

Hey there! Let’s talk about defending the blue or black Gems in a game. They’re important, and you’ve got to protect them before doing anything else. For instance, if a blue Gem is drawn as an 8th Gem, you’ll need to make sure you defend yourself against the oxygen danger first. Once you’ve successfully defended yourself, you can go ahead and play your “x8 gems” Crew Member card.

There’s another scenario to keep in mind. If the Troubled Waters scenario card is in effect on a Sunken City Tile and the dive leader draws 2 Gems, including one blue or one black, everyone has to defend against the danger before taking advantage of the second non-hazardous Gem.

Now, let’s talk about playing Crew Member Cards.

After a Gem is drawn, you have the chance to play one or more matching Crew Member cards from your hand. This is your opportunity to score some VP (that’s Victory Points) which you’ll collect at the end of the dive. And the best part? These VP are guaranteed, so no matter what happens next in the dive, you’ve got those points locked in!

When I play this game, there are different types of cards that I can use. Some of them just need one specific color of Gem, while others need multiple Gems of the same color. There are also cards that require a certain number of Gems, no matter what color they are. And there’s even a special white Gem with a question mark that can count as any color.

The interesting thing is that sometimes, when I draw a Gem, I can use it to play multiple cards and earn victory points. It’s like I’m getting more value out of that one Gem.

If you see a Crew Member with this icon, you can use them during a dive once you’ve drawn 8 gems, no matter what color they are.

When the Dive Ends

The dive ends when the leader decides to stop, and everyone still in the dive will get Victory Points (VP) for the gems they drew. The dive also ends if the leader can’t defend against a black or blue gem.

If the other players in the dive can protect themselves, they will still get VP for the gems they drew, even if the leader can’t. But the dive is over.

Every silver coin collected from a Wreck Tile is worth 1 Victory Point, and if you have a Boat on a silver scouting spot on this Wreck Tile, it’s worth 3 Victory Points.

Earning Victory Points as a Dive Leader

All Victory Points you earn are kept hidden in your Treasure Chest.

Discarding the Wreck Tile

Once you have explored a Wreck Tile for treasures, you cannot explore it again. Discard the Wreck Tile unless it is one of the 4 special Sunken City Tiles, which are placed on their dedicated areas on the game board.

Put all the Gems you collected back into the cloth bag.

End of the Game

The game ends immediately when you place the fourth and final Sunken City Tile on its designated area on the map.

In the game, we count up the VP from our treasure chests and compare our scores. It’s a friendly competition where the player with the highest total VP wins.

If two or more players have the same highest VP, we look to see who has the most Crew Member cards. That person becomes the winner. But if it’s still a tie, we all celebrate the victory together and promise to outshine each other in future dives.
