Coup Game Rules
Hey there! Let’s talk about the exciting world of the Coup game. Have you ever played this thrilling and strategic card game? If not, I’m here to give you a crash course on the rules. Get ready for some epic fun!
In Coup, the goal is to be the last player standing, using deceit, strategy, and a little bit of luck. Each player starts with two character cards that they keep secret. These cards represent different roles, such as the Duke, the Assassin, or the Contessa. Each role has its own unique abilities.
Here’s where the fun begins. You can take different actions on your turn, and the options are quite interesting. For example, you can choose to take foreign aid and claim to be the Duke, earning coins. But watch out! Other players can challenge your claim, and if they’re right, you lose one of your cards.
Speaking of challenges, let’s dive into that a bit. If someone claims to have a certain role, you can challenge them. If they really have that role, you lose one of your cards. But if they were bluffing, they lose one of their cards instead. It’s a risky move, but it can really shake up the game.
Of course, there are special abilities that some roles have. The Assassin, for instance, can pay to assassinate another player’s character, removing them from the game. The Captain can steal coins from another player, while the Contessa can block assassination attempts. With all these abilities in play, it’s important to keep a close eye on your opponents.
Remember, you start with two cards, but they can be destroyed throughout the game. If you lose both of your cards, you’re out of the game. However, there’s a twist! You can pretend to have a card that you don’t actually have. It’s all part of the strategy. You can bluff, lie, and mislead your opponents to gain the upper hand.
The game continues until only one player remains with cards still in play. That player is the winner! It takes cunning, strategy, and a little bit of luck to come out on top. Coup is a fast-paced and exciting game that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
So, if you’re ready for a game that tests your wits and challenges your friends, Coup is the perfect choice. Grab your character cards, devise your strategy, and prepare for an epic battle of deception. May the best player win!

Setup
I’ll tell you how to set up the game. First, we need to shuffle all the character cards and deal 2 to each player. You can always look at your cards, but remember to keep them face down in front of you. The remaining cards will be placed in the middle of the play area as the Court deck.
Next, we need to give each player 2 coins. You need to keep your money visible to everyone. The leftover coins will be placed in the middle of the play area as the Treasury.
Each player will also receive one summary card. This card is just for reference, so you can understand all the actions and characters before we start the game.
The person who won the last game will be the one to start this game.
Goal of the Game
The objective is to become the last survivor by eliminating all other players.
Player Influence
In this game, each player’s facedown cards represent the people they have influence over in court. The characters on these cards indicate the individuals the player can influence and the special abilities they possess.
Whenever a player loses influence, they must turn over one of their facedown cards to reveal it. The revealed card remains face up in front of the player, visible to everyone, and no longer provides any influence.
Each player gets to choose which of their own cards they want to reveal when they lose influence.
When a player loses all of their influence, they are exiled and eliminated from the game.
Gameplay
In the game, we take turns to make our moves, going clockwise. Each turn, we can choose one action, and passing is not allowed.
Once we’ve chosen our action, the other players can challenge or counteract it. If no one challenges or counteracts, the action automatically succeeds. But challenges are resolved first, before any action or counteraction takes place.
If a player loses all their influence and both their cards are face up in front of them, they’re immediately out of the game. They leave their cards face up and return all their coins to the Treasury.
The game comes to an end when there’s only one player left.
Actions
We’re free to choose any action we want, as long as we can afford it. Some actions, called Character Actions, require having influencing characters.
When you choose a Character Action, you have to claim that one of your face-down cards is the required character. You can either tell the truth or bluff. You don’t have to reveal any of your face-down cards, unless someone challenges you. If no one challenges you, you automatically succeed.
If you start your turn with 10 coins or more, you must launch a Coup as your only action that turn.
