Hey there! Welcome to the thrilling world of animal tracking in the beautiful Costa Rican forest. Get ready for an exciting adventure as we explore the streams, forests, and highlands of this tropical wonderland. Our mission is to count as many animals as we can while enjoying the stunning scenery.
As the leader of our expedition, you get to make the decisions on which path we take. But here’s the catch – if you choose to move forward, your fellow explorers might try to steal the credit for the animals you’ve discovered. And be careful! If we encounter too many dangers along the way, our journey may come to an abrupt end.
What’s Inside
- 72 tiles from the rainforest
- 30 explorer markers (in five different colors)
- 1 expedition marker
- Rulebook
What’s the Goal
Your objective is to earn points by discovering animals in the rainforest. The more animals you find, the more points you’ll get. Make sure to find at least one of each kind of animal. The player with the highest score wins!
Getting Started
Okay, listen up! Here’s what we’re gonna do:
I want you to shuffle all those little tiles up and make sure they’re all facing down – you know, the animal side.
Next, we’re gonna build ourselves a hexagonal board using those tiles. You’ll need five tiles for each side. Oh, and don’t forget, we won’t be using the extra tiles for this game, so just set them aside for now.
Let’s talk about starting a game of explorers. You’ll need a set of explorers in one color. Place one of your explorers at each of the six points of the hexagon. So, at the beginning of the game, you have six groups of explorers, with one explorer in each group.
Now, let’s choose who will be the starting player. It could be the player who has most recently visited a rainforest, like Costa Rica. Or, you can use the explorers in one group to randomly select a player. The chosen player will be the first expedition leader and will receive the expedition leader marker.
Terrain and Threats
In the game, there are three types of terrain: mountains/highlands, coast/wetlands, and forest. Each terrain has its own types of animals.
Each terrain also has a common and a rare animal type. Some terrains have a higher chance of finding two animals instead of one. And, of course, the different terrains also have varying levels of danger you need to be aware of.
-
Mountains/plateaus: A place where you can find elegant and vibrantbirds called common toucans. These majestic creatures add a touch of magic to their surroundings. You might be lucky enough to spot a rare jaguar on your journey through the mountains. This area is teeming with diverse animal life, although it is also facing various threats.
When it comes to coastlines and wetlands, they are home to a variety of fascinating creatures. For instance, I discovered that common basilisks, which are lizards known for their ability to run on water, can be found in these habitats. I was also intrigued to learn about the existence of rare frogs in these areas, which adds to their allure.
However, it’s important to note that the number of animals in coastlines and wetlands is declining. This is concerning because these habitats play a crucial role in supporting diverse ecosystems. The decreasing population of animals can be attributed to a range of factors, including human activities and changes in the environment.
Another worrisome aspect is the decrease in threats to these animals. While it might sound beneficial at first, it can actually disrupt the delicate balance of these habitats. Animals rely on natural predators to regulate their population and prevent overpopulation. With fewer threats present, the animal population can grow unchecked, which can have negative consequences for the overall health of the ecosystem.
Understanding the complexities of coastlines and wetlands is vital in protecting these vital ecosystems. By raising awareness about the importance of these habitats and the challenges they face, we can work towards finding sustainable solutions to conserve and restore them.
So, if you’re fascinated by the wonders of nature and want to make a positive impact, consider learning more about coastlines and wetlands. By exploring these unique habitats and sharing your knowledge with others, you can contribute to the preservation of these valuable ecosystems.
Hey there! Let’s talk about forests. They’re home to some interesting creatures like common monkeys and rare beetles. It may surprise you, but forests actually have the fewest animals compared to other habitats. But here’s the catch – forests are also the least dangerous place to explore!
Now, pay attention to the threat symbol. It looks like a mosquito, right? You might think mosquitoes are harmless, but don’t be fooled! In this game, if you come across one threat, it’s not a big deal. But if you happen to stumble upon two threats in the same round, uh-oh – your exploration is over!
Game Play
So, here’s how the game works. In each round, I get to be the expedition leader. That means I get to decide which expedition goes where. It’s a tough job because I also have the first chance to claim any tiles that are revealed during the round. But, there’s a catch. If I reveal two threats, I have to take the tiles, whether I want them or not!
![]() Hey look, Red can only choose to move an expedition with one of her explorers in it |
Now, if you’re the expedition leader, you have to choose an expedition that has one of your explorers in it. It’s a rule. If you don’t have an explorer in the group, you can’t move it. And if all of your explorers are back with you, that’s it! Your game is over and the next person becomes the expedition leader.
When you’re on an expedition, the first thing you have to do is choose a tile next to where you are. At first, there’s only one tile you can go to.
As you go further into the expedition, you can move to any tile that’s next to the one you’re on. Just remember to use the expedition leader marker so that everyone knows where your expedition is.
Once you choose a tile, flip it over. On the other side, you’ll see either one or two animals, and there might be a threat.
Now it’s up to you to decide if you want to keep the tile or pass. If you decide to pass, the other players in the expedition, starting with the one next to you, also get a chance to keep the tile or pass.
Getting Your Tiles
If you decide to keep the tile, take it and your explorer from the group and put them in front of you. Everyone can see the tiles you’ve claimed.
When I’m exploring, I need to remember to always move to the space where the last revealed tile was located. It’s important to stay together as a team and not get scattered. So, in a later round, we can move onto any tile that is next to where we are currently located. This helps us to stay organized and not wander too far.
Now, if another player wants to take a tile that has been revealed, they can do that. They will take both the revealed tile and their own explorer. It’s a strategic move, and it can be a way to gain an advantage over the other players.
If anyone claims tiles, that means the round is over. The expedition leader then passes the expedition leader marker to the next player in clockwise order. This way, everyone gets a chance to be the leader and make important decisions for the group.
Now, Let’s Talk About Passing and Revealing More Tiles
If everyone in the group decides to pass, the expedition leader gets to choose another tile that is next to the last chosen tile. Then, the leader reveals it to everyone. Now, the leader has a choice to make. They can either keep all of the tiles that have been revealed so far, or they can pass, giving everyone another chance to claim them.
If the leader decides not to pass, we, the players, get another chance to make a decision. We go around in a clockwise direction, starting from the leader, and each one of us has to decide whether we want to take all the tiles that have been revealed in the expedition or if we want to pass.
Now, if one of us decides to claim the tiles, they will be taken off the board along with the explorer that was on them. They will be placed in front of the player who made the decision. As for the other explorers, they will be moved to the spot on the board where the last tile was revealed.
I decide to grab the tiles. I take away my explorer and the tiles that were uncovered. I move the remaining explorers to where the last tile was.
The Dangers
If a danger appears, we keep going, but if we uncover a second danger, the round ends. I, as the leader, discard the two tiles with danger symbols. However, I get to keep all the other tiles from this round.
The other players take their explorers out of the group and move the rest to where the last tile was uncovered. The next player in clockwise order becomes the leader. Once dangers are in your score pile, they don’t do anything.
When leading an expedition, I have a crucial task: I must carefully choose which tiles to take along and which ones to leave behind. It’s not as simple as it sounds – there are dangerous threat tiles that I need to discard. If I don’t make the right decisions, the whole expedition can come to a sudden end!
What You Need to Know about Explorers
Hey there! So, here’s the deal: if I go on an expedition and there are no other tiles next to me, I’m stuck. That means I can’t discover any new tiles or claim them. Bummer, right? In that case, we have to remove my expedition from the board.
But here’s the thing, if I’m the only one exploring, I have a special advantage. I can keep revealing tiles as long as I want, or until I stumble upon two threats. Pretty cool, huh? Being the last person on an expedition is actually really powerful!
The game goes on until all of us explorers have been removed from the board or until there are no more tiles left to explore.
Let’s Talk about Tiles and Animals
Animals
Talking About Animals
When it comes to talking about animals, there’s always something new and fascinating to learn. The world is filled with such a variety of creatures, each with their own unique characteristics and behaviors.
Animals can be found in every corner of the globe, from the depths of the ocean to the highest mountaintops. They come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny insects to massive elephants. Their diversity is truly remarkable.
One of the key aspects of studying animals is understanding their habitats. Different animals have different needs when it comes to their homes. Some animals prefer the warmth of the tropical rainforest, while others thrive in arid desert environments.
Interpreting the behavior of animals is another important skill. By observing how animals act, we can gain insight into their habits and motivations. For example, the way a bird builds its nest can tell us about its nesting habits and mating rituals.
If you’re interested in animals, there are many factors to consider. Do you prefer land animals or aquatic ones? Are you fascinated by the idea of migration or the intricate social structures of pack animals? By exploring these different areas, you can find the perfect animal to study or admire.
In conclusion, animals are a never-ending source of wonder and amazement. By taking the time to learn more about them, we can develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it. So why not start exploring today? You never know what incredible things you might discover about the animal kingdom.
Hello there! Let’s talk about the magnificent toucans. These colorful birds are quite common in Costa Rica and many other locations. When fully grown, they reach a height of about 20-22 inches (51-56 cm). Just like humans, males are generally bigger than females. Isn’t that fascinating?
Now, let’s move on to the amazing jaguars!
Did you know that the jaguar is the largest cat in the Western Hemisphere? These majestic creatures love to live near swamplands or bodies of water. They are incredibly skilled at both swimming and climbing. It’s truly amazing!
Jaguars can be found in various parts of Central and South America. However, they are currently facing some serious challenges. Their natural habitats are being destroyed, and unfortunately, they often encounter dangerous situations with humans.
Now, let’s talk about another fascinating creature – the basilisk!
Have you ever heard of the common basilisk? They are pretty fascinating creatures! Adult basilisks can reach a length of nearly 30 inches, but most of that length is their impressive tail. It’s like they have a built-in whip!
One of the coolest things about basilisks is how fast they can run. On land, these lizards can reach speeds of up to 7 miles per hour. That’s faster than most humans can run! If they ever feel scared or threatened, they have a clever trick to escape. Basilisks can sprint across the surface of water for a short distance before diving in. It’s like they have superpowers!
Meet the Red-eyed Stream Frog
Hey there! Let me introduce you to this amazing creature – the nocturnal frog. It’s got a cool talent – its call sounds just like a deep, bell-like “boop boop boop boop.” How awesome is that? But here’s the thing: these frogs are in danger. They’re on the brink of disappearing because of diseases and the destruction of their homes. That’s why people are working hard to bring tadpoles from other places and help the frogs in Costa Rica survive and thrive.
Now, meet the Capuchin Monkey
Did you know that monkeys are highly social creatures? They live in groups of around 16-20 and can even live for over 50 years in captivity. It’s pretty amazing, right? What’s even more amazing is that monkeys have the ability to make and use tools. They’re like little engineers in the animal kingdom! And when it comes to food, monkeys are quite versatile. They’ll eat all sorts of plants and insects. They’re not picky eaters at all! But here’s something really cool – monkeys actually play a vital role in rainforests. You see, their diet of plants and insects helps with seed dispersal, which is crucial for the growth and sustainability of rainforest ecosystems.
Now, let’s talk about the Rhinoceros Beetle.
Wow, check out these incredible beetles! They’re enormous, growing to a whopping 3 inches (8 cm) in length. And those horns? They look pretty intimidating, don’t they? These guys use their impressive horns to battle it out with rival males for food and to win over the ladies. Talk about a beetle showdown!
Now, here’s something fascinating: these beetles live a pretty long life. In fact, they stick around for a solid four years! However, here’s the catch – half of their lifespan is spent as grubs. Can you believe it? These little guys munch on decayed wood during this stage. It turns out that they need old forests to survive and thrive, which is part of the reason why they’re so rare.

Scoring
Alright, let’s dive into the scoring system. You earn points for each of the six types of animals:
Plus, you get a cool additional 20 points just for having at least one of each of the six animals. And guess what? You score another easy 20 bonus points for every set of six different animals you collect. It’s like a game within a game!
Game over!
The ultimate champion is the player who racks up the most points. But what happens if there’s a tie? Well, the player with the most animals of one type breaks the stalemate and snags the top spot. And if the tie persists? No worries, my friend. The victory is shared by all the tied players. It’s a celebration of excellence!
Here’s an example of how scoring works:
Did you know that in this game, different animals have different point values? Let me explain. In this game, 3 jaguars are worth 6 points, 1 toucan is worth 1 point, and 5 monkeys are worth 15 points. Add them up, and you have a total of 22 points.
If You’re Playing with Two Players
Playing with just two players doesn’t require any changes to the rules or the board. But if you want a longer game, you can give each player two colors.
Here’s an interesting twist: when you end an expedition, you have the option to remove either of your colors from the expedition. Just remember that the tiles you collect must be separated by the colors used. At the end of the game, you’ll score each color separately and combine the scores for your final score.
Strategy and Tips to Help You Win
- Keep in mind that in 2- and 3-player games, you need to claim more tiles compared to 4- or 5-player games!
- As the player count increases, don’t forget about the powerful 20-point bonus you get for collecting all of the animals. It can really make a difference!
Hey there! Let me share some valuable tips to help you succeed in playing the game.
First things first, keep an eye on what the other players are collecting. It’s a smart move to grab some tiles yourself just so that others don’t gain an advantage. Remember, in games like these, strategies can be tricky!
Another thing to consider is that you might have to end an expedition early. Why? Well, this can prevent another group of explorers from getting cut off! It’s all about being one step ahead and taking control of the situation.
By following these tips and staying on top of the game, you’ll have a much better chance of coming out as the ultimate explorer! So go ahead, put your skills to the test, and let the adventure begin!
