First things first, let’s understand the objective of the game. It’s all about helping Coraline defeat the dangerous Other Mother and free the trapped souls. You’ll need to explore the eerie house and gather the right objects to achieve your mission.

To start, you’ll need a game board, which represents the house where the chilling events of Coraline take place. This board is divided into different rooms, each with its own unique challenges. We’ll be moving Coraline around the house, so hold on tight!

You’ll also get some cards that will spice up the game. These cards will give you special abilities or let you perform exciting actions. Keep an eye out for the Mystery Cards, as they hold hidden surprises for you to discover.

Now, let’s talk about the gameplay. On each turn, you’ll roll the dice to move Coraline across rooms. The number you roll determines how far you travel. As you explore, you’ll encounter doors, which may lead you deeper into the house or even to a different world!

Be careful, though! The Other Mother is watching and will try to stop you in your tracks. If you land on the same room as her, uh-oh! You’ll need to use your wits and the cards in your hand to outsmart her and continue your quest.

As you progress through the game, you’ll find objects that are essential to defeating the Other Mother. Collect these objects and keep them safe, as they will enable you to unlock powerful abilities and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Remember, teamwork is key! You’re not alone in this adventure. You’ll be playing with other brave souls, and together, you can strategize and support one another to increase your chances of success.

The game ends when either Coraline successfully defeats the Other Mother, freeing the trapped souls, or the Other Mother gets the upper hand and prevents Coraline from achieving her goal. It’s a nail-biting race against time!

Your Mission

Our mission is to find the Skeleton Key, the Eyes of the Ghost Children, and the Snow Globe that hold her captive parents. And here’s the twist – we’ll either win or lose the game as a team. Let’s dive in!

The Components of the Game

Character Tokens / Plastic Stands

Get familiar with the 8 Character Tokens modeled after key figures from the Coraline movie. These tokens will move from room to room based on the guidance provided by the Coraline and Beldam Story Cards.

Room Cards

Hey there! Let me tell you about the cool Room Cards in the Pink Palace Apartments. There are 6 of them, each showing a different location from the Other World.

Now here’s the fun part. Some of these Room Cards have pictures of characters that can help Coraline. How cool is that?!

We call all the Room Cards together “the board.” You can lay them out next to each other on the fold-out map or any flat surface when you start playing the game.

Moon Cards

Hey there! Let’s talk about these awesome Moon Cards. There are 6 of them, and each card shows a different phase of a big shadowy button covering up the Other World Moon. Cool, right?

But here’s the twist: if the sixth and final Moon Card gets flipped over and reveals a full eclipse, well, that’s bad news. It means the game is over and the players lose. Bummer!

Story Cards

I’m Coraline, and the Story Cards are an important tool that helps me on my journey. They guide me as I try to collect the 5 objects that will help me escape from the Other World. With each card I find, I get closer to freedom.

But beware! The Beldam, the villain of the story, has her own cards. She uses them to try and stop me, to keep me trapped in the Other World forever. I have to be careful and outsmart her at every turn.

Button Tokens

Button Tokens are special markers that help me keep track of who’s turn it is during each round of the game. They are pretty nifty!

My Amazing Satchel Card

While I’m playing, I get to collect these really cool Object Tokens. I keep them safe on my Satchel Card.

Since we’re all working together to help me out, my Satchel Card stays right on the table where everyone can easily reach it.

Awesome Object Tokens

So here’s the deal: when Coraline starts the game, she already has 3 things in her satchel that she can see. But in order to get out of this crazy world, she needs to find 5 more hidden objects and switch them with the ones she already has.

Each of these objects is like a little token that she has to uncover and put in her satchel.

Getting Ready

Okay, let’s get started. First, arrange the Room Cards as shown in the diagram.

Now, take the 8 stand-up Character Tokens and put them in the plastic stands. Make sure to place Coraline’s token on the Kitchen Card and the Beldam’s token on the Living Room Card. You can put the remaining six tokens to the side for now.

I placed Coraline’s Satchel Card face-up on the table where everyone could reach it. I also put the Looking Stone, the Military Cap, and the Garden Shears on top of the Satchel Card, making sure their faces were visible (see right).

Next, I placed all the other Object Tokens in their assigned rooms on the game board, making sure their faces were down.

Now it’s time to deal with the Moon Cards. I stacked them face-up in ascending order, starting with Moon Card #1 on top and ending with Moon Card #6 on the bottom. I left space next to the stack for a discard pile for any face-down cards.

Each of us took a Button Token and placed it on the table in front of ourselves with the colored side facing up.

Lastly, I shuffled the Coraline Story Deck and dealt the appropriate number of cards to each player. The number of cards each of us received depended on how many players were in the game.

Hey there! Let’s get started on an exciting adventure with the Coraline Story Cards. All you gotta do is place the rest of the cards face-down in a neat stack on the table. Make sure you leave some space for a discard pile next to it, where you’ll be placing the cards face-up.

I’m going to mix up the Beldam Story Cards and put them face-down in a pile on the table. We need to have space for a discard pile next to it where we’ll put the cards we don’t need.

How to Play the Game

First, everyone looks at their own cards. Then, we all decide together who will go first. We can talk about our plans, but we can’t show each other our cards.

The game is made up of a bunch of “rounds.” In each round, every player takes a turn. We decide as a group what order we’ll play in, and it can be any order we want, until everyone has taken a turn and completed one round.

Now, let me explain the four phases of a player’s turn:

The Story Phase

  • Play 1 Story Card
  • Discard 1 card to move Coraline
  • Discard 1 card to collect 1 object in Coraline’s current room

During the game, here’s what happens:

First, pass or exchange cards with the Story Deck. This is where the game gets interesting, as you never know what card you’ll end up with.

Next, it’s time for the Draw Phase. Take turns drawing cards from the deck until everyone has the required number of cards.

Then comes the Beldam Phase. This is a crucial part of the game where you make decisions that can either help or hinder the group. Think carefully and weigh your options.

The Button Phase is up next. Here, you’ll use the buttons you’ve collected throughout the game to progress and overcome challenges. Use them wisely!

The game continues with one round after another until either the players collectively win or lose. The outcome depends on how well you work together.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the first phase of the game – the Story Phase. This is where the magic happens.

During the Story Phase, you can choose one of the following activities to perform. It’s up to you to decide which one suits your strategy best.

Activity 1: Play 1 Story Card. Take a card from your hand and reveal it to the other players. Each card has unique instructions that will guide your next moves. Once you’ve followed the instructions, discard the card face-up into the Coraline Story Deck discard pile. Remember, some cards might give you similar tasks to complete.

That’s the gist of it. Now it’s time to dive into the world of Coraline and let the story unfold. Good luck!

  • Hey there! Let’s talk about some cool things you can do in this game.
  • First, you have the option to add a new character to a specific room or move an existing character to that room.
  • Another exciting feature is the ability to reveal an Object Token by flipping it, revealing its hidden side.
  • Aha! You can also collect a revealed Object Token that’s in Coraline’s current room and place it in her Satchel Card.
  • And listen to this, if a Story Card allows you to play another card from your hand, you totally can! It’s optional, though, not required.

Alright, let’s move on to Activity 2!

Instead of doing what the Coraline Story Card says, you’ve got the option to move Coraline by discarding a card. Pretty cool, right?

When I have a Story Card in my hand, I can move Coraline to any room that is next to her on the board. It’s easy to move her in a straight line, no diagonal moves allowed!

Activity 3: Get an object by discarding a card in Coraline’s room

If there are no other characters in the room Coraline is in, I can discard a card from my hand and pick up an object that’s been revealed in that room.

Activity 4: Trade cards with the story deck

If there are cards in my hand that I don’t want to play or discard, I can choose to pass. If I pass, I can also put one or more of my cards under the Coraline Story Deck before I start the Draw Phase.

If the Coraline Story Deck is empty, I can’t trade cards in this way. After passing on the Story Phase, I still have to finish the rest of my turn.

2. Draw Phase

How to play Coraline Beware the Other Mother Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When it’s time for the Draw Phase, you’ll keep drawing cards from the Coraline Story Deck until you reach the number of cards you started with.

If there are no more cards in the Coraline Story Deck, you have to skip this phase. Unfortunately, you can’t reshuffle the discard pile and make a new Coraline Story Deck.

3. Beldam Phase

When the Beldam Phase begins, you need to draw and reveal the top card of the Beldam Story Deck. Then, you have to follow the instructions on the card. But if there are no more Beldam Cards left in the deck, the game ends and you lose immediately.

Each Beldam Story Card is different, but many of them tell you to do similar things. For example:

  • Drop 1 Object: If a card tells Coraline to “drop 1 object,” she has to take the Object Token out of her Satchel and put it face up in the room she is currently in.

The first thing I want to tell you is that discarding a card is something only you need to do when it’s your turn. This means that you don’t have to worry about what others are doing when it comes to getting rid of cards.

Now, let’s talk about advancing the Moon. When a card tells you to do this, you simply take the top card from the Moon Deck and place it face-down in the discard pile. This will reveal the next Moon Card for everyone to see. Just remember, if the final Moon Card, number 6, is revealed, the game is over and everyone loses.

4. Button Phase

How to play Coraline Beware the Other Mother Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Whenever it’s your turn, remember to flip your Button Token to the black side. We all take turns until everyone has played and all the buttons are flipped.

When the next round starts, the buttons are flipped back to their original color and we decide on a new order to play.

Closing the Game

How to play Coraline Beware the Other Mother Official Rules UltraFoodMess

To win the game, I need to be in the Living Room and have these 5 Objects in my Satchel: three Ghost Eyes, one Skeleton Key, and one Snow Globe.

Then, I have to play the final victory card (look to the right) and let Coraline escape the Other World. But, be careful!

According to the victory card, if the Beldam is in the Living Room with me, I can’t escape until the Beldam is forced out of the room.

If the final Moon Card (#6) is shown OR if none of us have any Coraline Story Cards left OR if the Beldam Story Deck is empty at the beginning of someone’s Beldam Phase, we all lose.

Solo Play is also an option. You can play Coraline: Beware the Other Mother by yourself and try to help Coraline defeat the Beldam on your own!
