Welcome to the Clank! Game Rules
Hey there! I’m here to help you understand how to play Clank! This game is an exciting adventure that will test your skills and strategy. So let’s dive right in!
Getting Started
First things first, let’s talk about the game setup. Each player will start with a deck of cards, which represents their personal abilities. You’ll also have a starting hand of cards that you can use to take actions on your turn.
Now, take a look at the game board. It’s filled with different locations and pathways. Your goal is to explore these areas, gather valuable artifacts, and make your way back to safety. But be careful, as danger lurks in the form of a fearsome dragon!
Your Turn!
When it’s your turn, you’ll draw a hand of cards from your deck. These cards will give you actions that you can take. You can do things like move to a new location, fight monsters, and collect valuable items.
As you take actions, you’ll be making noise, represented by Clank cubes. The more noise you make, the more likely it is that the dragon will come after you. So be strategic and try not to make too much noise!
Exploring the depths of the dungeon is risky, but the rewards are great. You’ll find treasures, secrets, and powerful artifacts that will aid you on your journey. But remember, the deeper you go, the more difficult it becomes to escape.
Escaping with your Loot
Once you’ve gathered your treasures, it’s time to make your way back to the surface. But be careful! The dragon is still on the hunt, and if you’re not quick enough, you might get caught in its clutches.
As you make your way back, the game will become even more challenging. The dragon will be more active, and you’ll have to be clever and quick to avoid its wrath.
Game Over
When all players have made their escape, or if a player gets eliminated by the dragon, the game is over. The player with the most points from their collected artifacts is the winner!
Clank! is a thrilling adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat. So gather your friends, prepare your deck, and embark on a daring quest. Good luck!

Setting Up the Game
Alright, let’s get this show on the road! First things first, each of us is going to need 30 Clank! cubes. Take them and put them in your own personal supply, right in front of you. These cubes are going to come in handy later on.
Next, you’ll need to grab a pawn that matches your color. This will be your little game piece that you’ll move around the board. Make sure it matches your style!
Now, let’s talk about your 10-card deck. This deck is the key to your success in the game, so pay close attention. It’s made up of the following cards:
- 6 Burgles
- 2 Stumbles
- 1 Sidestep
- 1 Scramble
Make sure you shuffle your deck and keep it close by. You’ll be drawing cards from it throughout the game.
Finally, let’s set up the game board. Grab the tokens and place them in the following spots:
Hey there! Let me explain to you how to set up the game. We’ll start by placing the seven Artifacts, which have different values ranging from 5 to 30, face up on the spaces that match their numbers.
Now, if you’re playing with less than four players, we need to do something extra. Before putting the Artifacts on the spaces, shuffle them face down. Then, choose a few random ones to remove from the game. This adds a little extra challenge to your adventure!
- If we’re playing with 3 players, I will need to put one Artifact back in the box.
- If we’re playing with 2 players, I will have to put two Artifacts back.
First, let’s shuffle the Major Secrets and place one randomly on each Major Secret space.
There might be some extra Major Secrets. I’ll put them back in the box without looking at them.
Next, shuffle the Minor Secrets and place two randomly on each Minor Secret space.
Now, let’s put the Market Items in the Market area:
- #image.jpgWe’ll need two Master Keys
- #image.jpgWe’ll need two Backpacks
- #image.jpgWe’ll need three Crowns, valued at 10, 9, and 8
Hey there! Wanna know a secret? I’ll let you in on it. Just between you and me, you need to put the three Monkey Idols in the Monkey Shrine room. Genius, right? But hold your horses, let me break it down for you in simpler terms.
When setting up the game, here’s what you need to do:
First, grab the Mastery tokens and place one near the top left corner of the board for each player. This way, everyone has their own token.
Next, get the Gold tokens. These come in two values – 1 and 5. Put them in a Bank next to the game board. You’ll need them later!
Now it’s time for the Dragon marker. It’s black and goes on the Rage Track. Where it should start depends on the number of players in the game:
- In a 4-player game, start the Dragon marker on the first space of the Rage Track.
- In a 3-player game, start it on the second space.
- In a 2-player game, place it on the third space.
Don’t forget about the Dragon Bag! Put all 24 black dragon cubes inside and set the bag next to the game board. Keep it handy, you’ll be using it later on.
Last but not least, there are a few more cards to place. Place the Goblin monster card in Reserve, right next to the game board. You’ll also want to have piles of Mercenary, Explore, and Secret Tome cards nearby.
Hey there! Let’s get started on the game of Shuffle Dungeon. It’s super easy, I promise!
First things first, we need to set up the dungeon. Shuffle the Dungeon Deck and deal six cards face up on the table. This forms the Dungeon Row. But watch out for any cards with the Dragon Attack symbol on the right edge. If you see any, replace them with different cards until none of them show the symbol. Don’t worry, we’ll shuffle the replaced cards back into the Dungeon Deck.
Next, make some room next to the Dungeon Deck because we’ll use it to form a discard pile. It’s important to keep things organized as we play the game.
Now, let’s get your pawn into position! Each player places their pawn just outside the dungeon, at the top of the game board. Don’t forget to shuffle your 10-card deck and draw five cards from it. This will be your starting hand.
When it comes to deciding who goes first, we have some options. The sneakiest player can go first, or you can randomly choose. After that, the game will proceed clockwise. The first player places 3 Clank! cubes in the Clank! Area. The second player places 2 cubes, while the third and fourth players (if there are any) place 1 and 0 cubes, respectively.
Now, let the game begin!
Hey there! So, have you heard of CLANK!? It’s this really cool game where you get to build your own deck of cards. I mean, how awesome is that? You start off with five cards in your hand, and during your turn, you can play them in any way you want. It’s all up to you!
Now, here’s the fun part. These cards you play will generate resources for you. And get this, there are three different kinds of resources in the game. Talk about variety!
Skill: The Power to Expand Your Deck
Skill is an incredible asset that empowers me by providing an opportunity to obtain new cards for my deck. It’s like a key that unlocks the door to a whole world of possibilities.
With skill, you can broaden your horizons and enhance your potential. Think of it as your secret weapon, tucked safely in your arsenal, always ready at your command.
When I tap into my skill, I open myself up to a universe of opportunity. The more skill I possess, the more cards I can add to my deck, thereby increasing my chances of victory. It’s a continuous cycle of growth and progress.
By refining and honing my skill, I can actively shape the course of my journey. Skill allows me to discover new paths, explore uncharted territories, and overcome any obstacles that come my way.
With skill, every decision I make becomes crucial. The cards I choose to obtain will directly impact my strategy and the overall strength of my deck. It’s a responsibility that I relish, knowing that every move I make will shape the future of my battles.
So, embrace your skill with open arms. Nurture it, develop it, and let it guide you towards greatness. The power to expand your deck lies within you. Harness it, and unlock the door to victory.

Swords
Swords are crucial tools for battling the vile creatures that lurk within the dark depths of the dungeon.
Boots
Boots are what you use to move around the board.
Whenever you get a new card, you put it face up in your discard pile. When you need to draw a card but have no more left in your deck, you mix up your discard pile and turn it face down to create a new deck. Each time you do this, your newest cards become part of a bigger and better deck!
Everyone starts with the same cards in their deck, but as the game goes on, you’ll get different cards. Since cards can do many different things, each player’s deck and strategy will become more unique as the game unfolds.
Step 1: the Target
The rules of this thieving challenge are simple: we all have to go into the dungeon and steal an Artifact. Technically, you don’t have to escape with your life, but it’s definitely better if you do.
During the game, you have two goals:
- If you want to become the greatest thief in the realm, all you have to do is collect enough points using your Artifact and other loot. It’s a fun and exciting challenge that will keep you on your toes!
Imagine this: you’re trapped in a dungeon, and your only way out is to retrieve an Artifact token and escape. But there’s a catch – once you pick up an Artifact, there’s no going back. You’re stuck with it. So, you better choose wisely!
So, here’s the deal. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find that Artifact and make your way back to where you started. Only then will you be free from the clutches of the dragon that dwells in this treacherous dungeon.
Your Artifact won’t earn you a lot of points, but it’s a good starting point. To stay ahead of the competition, make sure to gather more loot along the way!
#image.jpg
Alright, listen up! We’ve got quite an adventure ahead of us, but the rewards will be worth it. Just remember, the artifact we’re after is super valuable, but getting there won’t be a walk in the park. We need to be prepared to make a quick exit once we’ve snatched it!
Step 2: Let’s Make a Plan
Sneaking past a dragon and stealing its treasure is no easy task, my friend. We’re gonna have to navigate some dangerous ruins, face off against scary monsters, and grab valuable loot along the way.
Now, here’s the deal. When it’s your turn, you’ve got some resources at your disposal-Skill, Swords, and Boots. You can use these to take different actions. And here’s the best part: you can take each action as many times as you want, as long as you have the resources for it. You can either wait and take your actions after playing all your cards or squeeze in some actions between cards if you feel like it.
Add a New Card to Your Deck
You can use Skill to get cards with blue banners from the Dungeon Row or cards with yellow banners from the Reserve. The Skill Cost is shown in the lower right corner of each card. When you pay the cost, the card goes into your discard pile and becomes part of your deck.
Now let’s talk about Devices. Devices are the cards with purple banners in the Dungeon Row. You can acquire them with Skill, but they don’t go into your deck. Instead, you use them according to the instructions on the card and then put them in the Dungeon discard pile.
Remember, the Skill Cost of a Device is shown in its lower-right corner.
And finally, let’s discuss fighting monsters.
When I venture into the Dungeon Row, I come across these formidable creatures known as Monsters. You can easily spot them by their red banners. These cards don’t require any particular Skill to acquire; instead, you have to rely on your trusty Swords to engage in combat with them.
Hey there! I wanted to talk to you about something pretty cool I discovered while playing this game called Swords And Monsters. You see, in order to defeat a monster, you need to find the swords hidden in its lower right corner. It’s kind of like a secret stash!
So, when you’re in the Dungeon Row and you decide to fight a monster, you actually get a reward! It’s right there in the DEFEAT text. And here’s the interesting part: the monster card doesn’t go to your discard pile; instead, it goes to the Dungeon discard pile. Isn’t that neat?
But hold on, there’s more! There’s this special monster called the Goblin that you can find in the Reserve. And get this: you can fight the Goblin as many times as you want in a single turn! And guess what? Each time you defeat it, you earn a reward. Talk about a generous Goblin!
Now let’s talk about buying stuff from the Market.
Welcome to the Market! It’s a special place where merchants set up their shops to cater to the brave adventurers exploring the dungeon. When you find yourself in a Market room, you have the opportunity to buy something cool.
Here’s the deal: everything in the Market costs 7 Gold. It’s a fair price for some awesome stuff. Once you buy an item, place it right in front of you, in your play area. You’ll find a list of all the items available at the Market on the back of the rule book.
But wait, how do you get to the Market in the first place? Well, it’s simple. Just move through a tunnel, and you’ll find yourself there. Easy peasy!
So, next time you stumble upon a Market room, take a break from your dungeon adventures and treat yourself to something nice. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
When it comes to exploring the dungeon, boots are your trusty companions. They help you navigate through the winding tunnels, allowing you to move from one room to the next.
As you make your way through the dungeon, it’s important to keep in mind that some tunnels have special rules. Let me explain:
- If a tunnel has Footprint icons, it means you’ll need two boots instead of one to traverse it.
- If a tunnel has Monster icons, moving through it will cause you damage. However, you can reduce the damage by using swords. Each sword you use will protect you from one point of damage. But remember, using swords is optional when moving through a tunnel with monsters.
- If you come across a tunnel with a lock icon, you won’t be able to pass through unless you have a Master Key token. You can get this special key from the Market.
- Tunnels shaped like arrows can only be used in the direction indicated by the arrow. You can’t move through them in the opposite direction.
Hey there! So, when you walk into a room, you have a choice. You can grab one of the tokens that are there – the Minor Secret, the Major Secret, the Monkey Idol, or the Artifact – and keep it for yourself.
- Every time you take a special item, the Dragon marker moves up one notch on the Rage Track.
- When you enter a room, you can only take one item. If there are multiple items in the room, you must leave and re-enter to pick up another.
- If you already have a special item, you cannot take another one.
- You have the option to not take an item if you don’t want to. Sometimes, it’s better to skip a less valuable item and go for a more valuable one somewhere else.
- When you take a Minor or Major Secret item, you have to reveal it. When you enter a Crystal Cave room, you become exhausted and cannot use Boots for the rest of your turn. You might still be able to move by Teleporting (described in Advanced Moves), but you won’t be able to use Boots until your next turn.
Hey there! Let’s talk about two other cool things that can happen with your cards:
1. Gettin’ that sweet Gold.
So, when you get Gold, you take it from the Bank and put it in front of you. Each Gold is worth 1 point when the game ends. But that’s not all! You can also use it to buy things from the Market or for other reasons during the game.
II. Clank!
Some cards make you gain Clank! When this happens, you add cubes from your personal supply to the Clank! Area on the game board. Sneaky, right? But don’t worry, there are also cards that let you remove Clank!.
For each negative Clank! you get, you remove one of your Clank! from the Clank! Area. If you don’t have enough Clank! there, you can avoid adding Clank! later in your turn if something makes you do so. And any leftover negative Clank! is lost when your turn ends.
When you finish playing all of your cards and using up all the resources you want to, your turn is over. You need to put all the cards you played into your discard pile and draw five new cards for your next turn. It’s important not to waste any Skill, Swords, or Boots you have left, so make sure to use them wisely!
Now it’s the green player’s turn, and she plays the following cards:
When I play my green player cards, I have to follow the instructions right away. Each time I play a card, I add 1 Clank! to the Clank! Area because of the Stumble action. But if I play Move Silently, I can remove 1 Clank! instead.
Luckily, I still have -1 Clank! left from Move Silently, so I can use it later if I need to make more noise. I have two Boots, which means I can move through two tunnels. This turn, I end up in a Crystal Cave room. Even if I had more Boots, I couldn’t have moved any farther.
I have two Swords, which I use to Fight an Orc Grunt in the Dungeon Row. When I defeat the Orc Grunt, it says I gain 3 Gold. I take the monster card and put it in the Dungeon discard pile.
When I use my total of 3 Skill, I can acquire a Kobold Merchant from the Dungeon Row. I place the card in my own discard pile, but I won’t get any gold or additional skill from it until I reshuffle my discard pile, draw the card, and play it.
Once I’ve played all the cards in my hand and used up all the resources available to me, it’s time to end my turn.
Step 3: Confronting the Mark
The queen of Dragon Keep is Nictotraxian, but we affectionately call her “Nicki”. She’s definitely not going to be happy if she finds out that we’ve been sneaking around her lair and taking her things.
After I finish my turn, I always check if there are any empty spaces in the Dungeon Row. If there are, I refill them with new cards from the Dungeon Deck. But here’s the tricky part – if any of the cards I draw have a Dragon Attack symbol, the dragon attacks! And it’s not a multiple attack; it only happens once, no matter how many Dragon Attack symbols I reveal.
Now, let’s talk about how the dragon attack works. To initiate the attack, I gather all the Clank! in my Clank! Area and put it in the Dragon Bag. Then, I give the bag a good shake and draw a certain number of cubes from it. The number of cubes I draw is based on the Dragon marker’s current space on the Rage Track.
Any black cube that I draw is kept aside, but colored cubes represent the damage I receive. The cubes that I don’t draw remain in the bag, so there’s still a chance for them to come out in the future. It’s important to note that the more noise I make by generating Clank!, the higher the chance of the dragon noticing me and attacking. So, managing my noise level is crucial for my survival!
The dragon gets angrier as we play. Each time we find an Artifact or discover a Dragon Egg, we move the Dragon marker one space further along the Rage Track. This means that more cubes will be drawn during the next attack. The more cubes that get drawn, the more dangerous the game becomes. We need to be cautious!
When it’s the yellow player’s turn, there are only three cards left in the Dungeon Row. In order to fill the empty spaces, we reveal three cards from the top of the Dungeon Deck. Unfortunately, two of these cards have the Dragon Attack symbol, so an attack will happen this turn.
All of the cubes in the Clank! Area go into the Dragon Bag. The Dragon marker is currently on the fifth space of the Rage Track, so we draw four cubes from the bag.
There are four cubes that play a role in the game I’m about to explain. One of them is black and doesn’t affect anyone. It’s set aside and not really important. The second cube is green, and if you have it, you’ll take 1 damage. Now, the last two cubes are both yellow. If you have either one of them, you’ll take 2 damage. So be careful with those yellow cubes!
Step 4: Let’s Get Away
Delving into dungeons can be quite risky, my friend. As a master thief, you need to be smart about managing your health. You see, staying alive and having money to spend are the two most important things.
You can keep track of your health on the Health Meter at the bottom of the game board. Whenever you take damage during the game, and trust me, you will take damage, stack your cubes on the Health Meter of your color, starting from the left.
- If a dragon attacked and caused damage, use the cubes taken from the Dragon Bag.
- If you decide to take damage by going through a Monster tunnel without a Sword, take the cubes from your personal supply. However, you can’t choose this option if it would completely fill your Health Meter!
Some effects can heal the damage you’ve taken. When you heal, take one of your own colored cubes from your Health Meter and put it back in your personal supply. This cube can be used later for more Clank!
If your Health Meter ever gets full, you’ll be knocked out. What happens next is determined by your performance so far:
So, you’re in the Depths area of the dungeon, huh? Well, don’t worry – I’m here to help you figure out what happens next.
If you managed to find an Artifact and successfully escaped the Depths, then you’re in luck! The townsfolk will come to your rescue, and you’ll be able to tally up all the points you’ve earned. It’s like a little victory dance for making it out alive.
But what if you haven’t found an Artifact yet or if you’re still stuck down there? Well, I hate to break it to you, but you can’t be rescued just yet. You’re still in the game, but things aren’t looking too good for you, my friend. You’ll have to keep pushing forward and hoping for the best.
Now, here’s the thing – once you do find an Artifact, there’s a way to potentially boost your score even more. You have the option to make your way back to where you started, outside of the dungeon. It’s no easy feat, but if you can make it all the way back without getting knocked out, you’ll be rewarded with a coveted Mastery token. This little gem is worth an additional 20 points, so it’s definitely something to strive for!
Oh, and one more thing – if you haven’t found an Artifact yet, you can’t leave the dungeon or even be rescued. Your only focus should be on finding that precious item and making your great escape.
Step 5: the End of the Line
Timing is everything when it comes to pulling off this heist – getting caught by a dragon is way worse than getting caught by the authorities! But like in any heist, there’s no harm in leaving your rivals behind once you’ve made your escape.
If you leave the dungeon or get knocked out, things change for you. You won’t take your regular turns anymore. You won’t add any more Clank! to the Clank! Area. Any cards that affect everyone won’t affect you either. And if any cubes of your color come out of the Dragon Bag, don’t worry – they won’t hurt you, they’re treated like black cubes.
Let me tell you something important. When you’re playing the game, the first time anyone leaves the dungeon or gets knocked out, they have to go back to the entrance. You know, that leftmost space on the Countdown Track.
And here’s the thing. On their next turn, instead of doing the usual stuff, they gotta move their pawn forward one space on that Countdown Track. Then, they gotta do whatever the space says. But hey, don’t worry – the other players who leave the dungeon or get knocked out after that don’t have to bother with the Countdown Track.
- Now, on the second, third, and fourth spaces, there’s trouble. There’s gonna be a Dragon Attack. And here’s the kicker: for each of these attacks, we gotta draw extra cubes from the Dragon Bag. It’s one extra for the second space, two extra for the third, and three extra for the fourth. Watch out!
- But wait, it gets worse. On the fifth space, guess what happens? The dragon goes all out and knocks out everyone who’s still stuck in the dungeon. We don’t want to end up there, that’s for sure.
So, what happens when the adventure ends?
Well, once all of us are out of the dungeon or we’re knocked out, the game finally comes to a close. It’s time to tally up our scores and see who came out on top!
Here’s what we need to count:
- The value of our Artifact. (Check it out, it’s pretty important!)
- The points we earned from any other cool tokens we managed to snatch.
- The points we get from the pile of Gold we amassed – yeah, it’s good to be rich!
- And finally, the points earned from the awesome cards in our deck. See that number in the top right corner? That’s how much it’s worth!
Now that’s how you put an end to an epic dungeon crawl! Time to see who’s (literally) raking in the most treasure!
