Welcome to the Chutes and Ladders Sesame Street Game!
I’m here to explain the rules of the game to you, so you can start playing right away. It’s a game that’s been around for a long time, and it’s a lot of fun! The game is played on a board with squares numbered from 1 to 100, and there are pictures of different Sesame Street characters along the way.
When it’s your turn, you spin the spinner and move your game piece the number of spaces shown on the spinner. If you land on a square with a ladder, you get to climb up the ladder and move ahead. But if you land on a square with a chute, you have to slide down the chute and move back.
The goal of the game is to be the first person to reach square number 100. It sounds simple, but there’s a twist. You have to land exactly on square 100 to win. If you spin a number that would take you past square 100, you have to spin again until you get a number that allows you to land on the exact square.
There’s one more thing you need to know. The game has a few special squares that can change your fortune. For example, if you land on a square with a picture of Big Bird, you get to climb up a ladder. But if you land on a square with a picture of Oscar the Grouch, you have to slide down a chute.
So, are you ready to play? Now that you know the rules, it’s time to spin the spinner and move your game piece along the board. Good luck, and have fun!

Come along with me, Elmo, and all of our pals from Sesame Street on an exciting journey to the very top! Pick your most-loved character and give the spinner a whirl to see how many spaces you can move them forward or backward on the gameboard path.
Scale up the ladders, watch out for the slippery chutes, and who knows? Maybe you’ll be the first one to zoom all the way to square #100!
What’s Inside?
When you open the box, you’ll find a few important things:
- A gameboard
- Four characters with stands
- A spinner with a base and arrow
- Instructions to help you get started
The Goal of the Game
Ready to have some fun? The objective is simple: be the first player to reach square #100!
Getting Things Ready
Before we begin, let’s make sure everything is set up correctly. Follow these steps:
1. Spinner: First, carefully punch out the spinner board from the paper sheet. Next, assemble the spinner by following the instructions in Figure 1.
2. Characters: Now, punch out the characters from the paper sheet. Take each character and slide them into a clear character stand. To close the stand, snap the frames together as demonstrated in Figure 2.
Setting Up the Game
Let’s get ready to play by setting up the gameboard. Make sure everyone can easily move their characters around the board. Each player should choose a character to play.
If there are any extra characters, set them aside for now. The chosen characters will start off the board near square #1. Now, let the fun begin!
Discovering the Squares
Take a closer look at the gameboard. The squares are numbered from 1 to 100. Your character will move along the path on the board, counting from square #1 and moving upward. You’ll start at square #1 and make your way to square #10. From there, you’ll continue the path to square #11 and so on, up to square #20 and beyond.
However, there’s more to it than just moving up. You can climb ladders to move ahead and occasionally slide down chutes to move back. We’ll talk more about that in a moment.
Welcome to Game Play!
So, here’s the deal: We all spin the spinner. The player who gets the highest number goes first. Then we take turns in a circle, got it?
Now, let’s talk about what you do on each turn:
When it’s your turn, you spin the spinner and move your character square by square. The number you spin tells you how many spaces to move. For example, if you spin a 5 on your first turn, you count as you move each space until you reach square #5 on the board.
When it’s your next turn, try practicing your counting skills by “counting on”. So, let’s say you’re on square #5 and you spin a 3. Instead of counting “1, 2, 3” as you move, you can count “6, 7, 8” to keep track of where you’re going. Once you’ve moved your character, your turn is over.
Oh, by the way: It’s totally cool for two or more characters to be on the same space at the same time. No worries there!
Going Up a Ladder or Down a Chute
Hey, take a look at these pictures. See how the characters are going up a ladder or down a chute? Pay attention to what they’re doing.
Ladders
When I play the game, I notice something interesting: if my character lands on a picture square at the bottom of a ladder, I have to climb up to the picture square at the top of the ladder. It’s like a shortcut!
Let me give you an example. Imagine my character ends its move on square #21. Guess what? I can immediately move ahead to square #42! It feels like I’m jumping ahead in the game.
Sliding Down Chutes
Hey, have you ever played a game where you move your character around a board? Well, I’m here to tell you about a special thing called a chute. It’s like a slide that can either help you or slow you down.
Let’s say you’re playing a game and you land on a picture square at the top of a chute. Uh-oh – you don’t get to stay there! Instead, you have to slide down the chute all the way to the picture square at the bottom.
Here’s an example: imagine you land on square number 93. Yep, you guessed it – you have to immediately move back down to square number 73. It’s like going down a cool slide, but without the choice!
But wait, there’s more! If you end your turn on certain spaces, your turn is over. Those spaces really know how to ruin your fun! So make sure to watch out for them.

- Imagine a square with no picture.
- Imagine a square with no picture, just an arrow.
- Imagine a square that a ladder or chute passes through.
- Imagine a square at the top of a ladder with a picture.
- Imagine a square at the bottom of a chute with a picture.
The End of the Game
The game is won by the first player to reach square #100! You can achieve this in two ways:
- If you land right on square 100, you win. But if you spin and go over square 100, you can’t move forward and have to try again on your next turn.
- You can also reach square 100 by landing on square 80, which has a ladder that will move you ahead to square 100.
