Getting Set Up

First things first, everyone gets a score sheet. Put it right in front of you. Grab a pencil and get those dice ready.

How to Play

Let’s get started! The youngest player goes first, and then we take turns clockwise. If you’re the youngest player, go ahead and roll all six dice. You have two more chances to re-roll if you want.

When we play this game, we get to make choices after every roll. Do we keep some dice and roll the others again? Or do we keep all the dice and wait for the next round? It’s up to us!

Let’s take a look at the dice and see what our options are:

Colors

Let’s start by choosing one color. Whenever a die shows this color, put a cross in the corresponding color row on your score sheet. You have to use all the dice of that color.

For example: Let’s say that after the third roll, Sami’s dice show 3 orange, 2 green, and 1 pink. Sami decides to choose the color orange. For each of the three orange dice, Sami will make a cross in a box in the orange color row on the score sheet.

The Joker

If you rolled one or more Jokers, you have a special power. You can use the Jokers as any color you want. But there are some rules you need to follow. You can choose a color that is already on your dice, but you can’t use the Jokers to make a combination with a color that is already on your dice. You have to decide if you want to use all the Jokers or all the dice of a color that is already on your dice.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say you roll your dice and you get 3 Jokers, 2 orange dice, and 1 pink die. You decide to use the Jokers and you choose the color orange. For each Joker, you make a mark in the orange color row on your score sheet. But you can’t use the 2 orange dice anymore.

But sometimes, luck is not on your side. Sometimes, luck is in the hands of the players. And that’s when you roll La Calavera – the skull:

Skull

If you rolled at least one skull, you have to set aside any dice that show a skull when they’re rolled. You can’t roll them again on your turn, and they have to stay in the middle of the table until your turn is over.

And that’s not all! The skull also affects your opponents. They have to make crosses on their score sheets, whether they like it or not. But you get to choose the color or joker first from the remaining dice, and you can enter a corresponding number of crosses in the right color row.

Now it’s their turn. They have to choose one of the remaining colors or jokers and enter the correct number of crosses. If multiple players want to use the same color, no problem – they’re allowed to. They just can’t use the dice you’ve already entered.

The Curse of the Dead Skull:

Did you roll three or more skulls? Oh no! You’re out of luck, and you can’t write anything on your score sheet.

The rest of us will use your dice result. Just pick a color (or Joker) and mark a cross for each die on your score sheet. It’s okay if multiple players use the same color again. Then, it’s your neighbor’s turn to roll the dice.

Exception: If you’ve already filled in a color row and can’t choose another color, you don’t have to do anything.

This also applies if you don’t get anything, even with the skulls.

Example: Let’s say Sami rolls 2 skulls and 4 orange dice. He puts down 4 crosses in the orange row. The rest of us don’t write anything since we can’t use Sami’s color.

Welcome to the Bonus Hunt!

Take a look at your score sheet. Every third box is marked by a vertical bonus line. There are three of these lines in total, and they each lead to bonus points. To earn these bonus points, you must fill all four color rows up to the bonus line.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already marked crosses in one or more color rows beyond the bonus line. What matters is if you were the first to fill all four color rows up to the bonus line. If you were, then you’ll receive bonus points based on the bonus line you reached:

• 1st Bonus line: 4 points
• 2nd Bonus line: 5 points
• 3rd Bonus line: 6 points

Circle the corresponding bonus points on your score sheet. The other players will cancel out this bonus line, but don’t worry, your opponents still have a consolation:

First, you need to fill all four color rows up to the bonus line. Once you do that, you’ll receive some bonus points. The amount of bonus points you get depends on which bonus line you reach:

• If you reach the 1st bonus line, you’ll get 2 points.
• For the 2nd bonus line, you’ll earn 3 points.
• And if you make it to the 3rd bonus line, you’ll get a whopping 4 points!

Now, here’s the trick to saving your points and avoiding trouble.

On your score sheet, there’s a gray shaded area right below the guitar player. That’s the death zone, and you really don’t want to end up there. Why? Well, you only get a few points or even negative points if you make a wrong move in the death zone. So, it’s best to steer clear of it by following this strategy:

Right before the death zone, there’s a special area called the score area. It’s marked with yellow hatches. In the score area, each color is worth between 4 and 10 points. The higher the score, the better! But here’s the catch – once you decide to freeze a row by coloring it, you can no longer make any more crosses on your score sheet. So, it’s a bit of a trade-off between earning more points and preserving what you already have.

So remember, in Color Rows, it’s all about filling the color rows and reaching the bonus line to earn valuable bonus points. But be careful not to end up in the death zone and lose points. Freeze your row wisely and secure your hard-earned points in the score area!

Let me tell you, it all boils down to how good you are at rolling those dice. If you want to lock in your score for a specific color, you’ll need to roll a certain number of Jokers during your turn. And that number depends on how many points you’ve got:

If you rolled a specific number of Jokers, you have the chance to freeze the points in a color row. To do this, gather all the Jokers and locate the last cross in that row. Circle it to mark it as frozen. Don’t forget to enter the corresponding points in the points field at the end of the same row. Once you’ve done this, you won’t be able to make any more crosses in that color row. Keep in mind that only you can freeze that specific color row. Your opponents, unless they’ve frozen it themselves, can continue to make crosses in that row.

Quick note: There is a special scenario when you roll 3 skulls and at least two jokers. In this case, since you rolled 3 skulls, you can’t use the jokers and therefore can’t freeze anything.

Oh, are you in the Death Zone?

So, you’ve placed your crosses in a row of colors and landed in the danger zone? Well, don’t panic just yet.

All you have to do now is circle the last cross in this color sequence and see what happens next. Will you get pluses, minuses, or no points at all? Mark your result in the points field located at the end of the color row.

End of the Game

The game comes to an end when one of the players manages to freeze points in all four color rows. If your last cross is in the points zone of any color row, congratulations! You now have the chance to score the points indicated in the corresponding column.

Simply enter your score in the points field of the respective color row. Then, add up all your points in the points rows, including any bonus points you may have earned. Finally, write down the grand total in the lower right corner of the board, in the “Total” field.

And here’s the clincher: the player with the highest number of points wins the game. It’s that simple!

In the unlikely event of a tie, don’t worry. It’s considered a shared victory. How awesome is that?
