Getting Started

1. First, each player picks a folding Item Shop Board and puts it in their play area.
2. Next, grab 5 tokens from the supply for each player.
3. The player who most recently paid for something in cash gets to claim the quest token. Put it next to your shop.
4. Lastly, shuffle the item deck and place it where everyone can easily reach it.

I’m going to create a deck of 3 monster cards. To do this, I’ll randomly choose 1 monster from each rank: Rank III, Rank II, and Rank I. If this is your first game, we’ll use the Bandit Captain, Orc Warlord, and Vampire Queen.

Playing the game is as easy as 1-2-3! There are six steps to follow in each round, and you can find them listed in order from left to right at the bottom of your shop board.

Step 1 – Supply

Let’s get started by flipping the top card of the monster deck faceup. This will reveal the current monster we’ll be dealing with.

The monsters in this game have different abilities that can affect the game in various ways. Some abilities are triggered at specific times, while others are always active.

Now, each player will be dealt 4 item cards from the item deck. These cards will be placed facedown, so keep them hidden from the other players.

From these cards, you will choose 1 that you want to add to your collection. Place that card facedown on your shop board.

Once everyone has chosen a card, pass the remaining cards to the player on your left. They will choose a card and the process will continue until all cards have been chosen. Now we’re ready for Step 2 – Display.

Step 2 – Display

When I start this step, I take all the cards I’ve chosen and hold them in my hand. Then, I pick one item card from my hand and put it facedown in the display area of my shop board.

I can’t sell the items I put on display this round, but they’ll help me attract heroes to my shop.

When you look at each item, you’ll notice that they have different icons and hearts on the left side. These icons show which heroes can use the item, and the hearts represent how attractive the item looks.

Some items may not have any hearts at all, but they can still be useful in the game.

Aside from the icons and hearts, items also have special abilities and stat bonuses that are applied when you use them.

Once everyone is done setting up their displays, we all reveal our items. Now we can move on to Step 3 – Shopping!

Step 3 – Shopping

When we start the game, we begin by looking at each player’s display and finding the player with the most icons. This person gets to go first. Next, we take a look at the heroes that are available in the center of the table. Each player can choose one hero to add to their shop. They place the hero next to their board.

Now, once a hero is in a shop, that shop is considered occupied. This means that no other heroes can enter that shop during this round. It’s important to remember this rule.

So, here’s how it works: the player with the most total icons in their display gets to choose a hero for their shop first. Makes sense, right?

But here’s the catch: when you’re picking a hero, you have to make sure they’ve got at least 1 class icon that matches an item in your display. Gotta keep things interesting!

Now, if you’re one of those unlucky players who can’t find a hero that matches any of their items, don’t worry. Just hang tight while the other players make their choices. Your turn will come soon enough.

So, here’s the deal. If none of us heroes in town have the right class for an item in a shop, we have to figure out who gets to go in first. It’s pretty simple, really. The shop with the most total class icons gets to choose a hero to come in. Then, we just keep going until all the shops are filled up.

When it comes to deciding who gets to choose first in a shop where multiple players have the same number of icons, there are a few rules to follow.

The player who has the highest total price of all the items in their display gets to choose first. If there are still multiple players tied for the highest total price, then they choose in clockwise order starting from the player with the quest token.

Once the last hero has entered a shop, the player who owns that shop gets to claim the quest token.

When all the shops are full, I can start selling item cards from my hand to the hero in my shop. Selling to a hero is a pretty straightforward process. I can sell as many items as I want, as long as the item card has a symbol that matches the hero’s class.

When you want to sell an item, you need to take tokens from the hero card. The number of tokens should be equal to the price of the item card. Then, place the item under the hero card, making sure to display its bonuses and abilities.

Once you have done that, the item is considered equipped. But don’t forget, you can’t sell any items that are already in your display.

After selling items to your hero, you should move the hero card in front of your shop board. Along with the hero, any equipped items and any unspent tokens on that hero should also be moved. This hero will now represent your shop during the Adventure Step.

Once all the shops are done selling items, the Shopping Step ends. You should return all the item cards in your display back to your hand. Then, it’s time to proceed to Step 4 – Adventure.

Note that each hero possesses a unique power that can influence the choices you make in this part. These powers are activated according to the instructions on the hero card.

Moving on to Step 4, the Adventure phase.

When we reach this step, it’s time for us heroes to face the monster. Each hero gets a card from the adventure deck. This card can change our attack and defense values, and it may have special effects too.

Starting with the player who has the quest token, we take turns clockwise and do the following:

1. If your hero’s total attack value, including all bonuses, is equal to or greater than the monster’s toughness value, you successfully wound the monster! Put one wound token on the monster and gain one reward.

If you’re playing Bargain Quest, here’s an important rule to keep in mind. When your hero’s total Defense value, including all bonuses, is equal to or greater than the monster’s total Strength value, your hero survives the encounter and you earn 1 point. But if your hero’s Defense value falls short, the hero is defeated. In that case, you must discard the hero card, all items equipped to that hero, and any remaining hearts on its card. Remember, it’s all about ensuring your hero’s survival and making smart strategic choices in this game. Good luck!

When none of us heroes can hurt the monster, we still come together to deal a little bit of damage. We place 1 wound token on the monster, hoping it will make a difference.

Once all of us heroes have finished attacking and defending, we check if the monster has enough wound tokens. If the number of wound tokens is equal to or greater than the total number of players, we’ve defeated the monster! It’s time to celebrate and get rid of it for good.

Imagine this: you find yourself in a thrilling game, facing monsters and treasures in an epic adventure. But what happens when the monsters run out? That’s when the game comes to an end, and it’s time to tally up your score.

If you managed to survive the encounter, each hero still standing gets rewarded with the number of points indicated by the treasure chest icon located on the bottom right corner of the monster card. So, the more treasure, the higher your score!

Once the scoring is done, it’s time to get ready for the next round. How? By shuffling all the adventure cards back into the adventure deck, of course.

Now, here’s something interesting: if we don’t manage to defeat the monster, each of us heroes who make it out alive gets a reward equal to the value in the little coin symbol in the bottom left corner of the monster card.

Alright, let’s get rid of all the stuff we have from our previous adventure. Any items and adventure cards that the surviving heroes have collected, we’ll just toss them out. But don’t worry, we’re not done yet!

For every hero that got defeated, we’re going to draw another hero card from the deck and put it right in the middle of the table with the rest of the heroes. Oh, and make sure to put some money, the P’s, on the new hero’s card according to its listed value.

Now, we’re ready for Step 5 – Upgrade. But wait, before we move on, I should warn you! Be careful, because there are some monster abilities that come into play right at the end of this Adventure Step, so watch out!

Now you have the chance to make your shop better with upgrades and employees. Let’s begin by taking the top two cards from the employee deck and putting them faceup next to the upgrade cards. These are the employee cards that are available for you to choose from.

Starting with the player who has the quest token and going in a circle, each player can decide whether to buy an upgrade card or an available employee card. To make the purchase, you just have to pay an amount equal to the cost shown in the upper left corner of the card. Then, return that amount to the supply.

Once you’ve purchased a card, place it faceup next to your shop board. This will be a helpful addition to your shop.

Upgrade Cards come in two different types. The Display Upgrade lets you put more item cards on display, while the Storage Upgrade lets you save more cards in storage for later rounds.

Remember, you can only have one of each type of Upgrade Card in your shop. So choose wisely and make your shop the best it can be!

Upgrade cards come in two levels: +1 and +2. If you don’t want to buy a new card during the Upgrade Step, you can choose to spend 10 to flip an upgrade card instead!

Employee Cards have special abilities that make them unique. You can use these abilities during specific steps, which are indicated in the bottom right corner of each card. But remember, using an employee card is always optional.

When you purchase an available employee card, replace it with a new card from the top of the employee deck right away. However, if the employee deck is empty, no new employees can be added.

It’s important to note that your shop cannot have more than one employee card with the same name. So choose wisely!

Once everyone has had the chance to purchase a card, shuffle the remaining available employee cards back into the employee deck. Then move on to Step 6 – Storage.

Step 6 – Storage

When playing the game, you need to choose one item card from your hand and put it in storage. To do this, simply place the card facedown on your shop board. Any other item cards that you didn’t put in storage should be discarded.

When I put item cards in storage, they stay facedown on the shop board during the Supply Step. They don’t count as part of the draft, and I’ll add them to my hand at the end of the Supply Step. If I have the Storage Upgrade, I can even place more cards in storage during the Closing Step.

We’ve reached the end of the round! Now we move on to the next round, starting with Step 1 – Supply!

Running Out Of Cards

If there’s a tie, the player with the most P win. And if there’s still a tie, the tied players share victory.

If the item deck is empty when I need to draw or deal a card, I shuffle the discard pile to make a new item deck. But if the hero deck is empty and I should draw a new hero, the game ends right away – check it out below.

End of the Game

When the Adventure Step comes to an end, the game is over if there are no more monsters left. At that point, it’s time to move on to Scoring. However, if the hero deck is empty and a new hero is supposed to be drawn, the game ends immediately. This is bad news because it means the monsters have taken over the town and all players have lost the game.

Scoring

Now it’s time to calculate your final score. For each you’ve collected, you earn 1 point. On top of that, you gain 1 point for every 10 you have (rounding down).

The player who ends up with the highest total score is the winner!

If multiple players have the same score in a game, the player with the highest score is declared the winner. However, if there is still a tie after determining the highest score, the tied players will share the victory and be considered winners together.

Playing with a Larger Group

If you’re playing with 5 or 6 players, here are some extra rules to keep in mind:

When it’s the Adventure Step, and none of the heroes are able to successfully wound the monster, you need to add 2 wound tokens to the monster instead of just 1. On the other hand, if only 1 hero is able to wound the monster, you still need to add an additional wound token.

During the Supply Step, when there’s a Rank II monster card in play, all players will pass their cards in a counter-clockwise direction while doing the draft.

Let’s Take It Up a Notch! – Advanced 2 Player Variant

If you want to make the game longer and more strategic when playing with two players, you can try these rule changes:

When setting up the game, place 4 heroes in the middle of the table instead of 2. During the Supply Step, give each player 6 cards instead of 4. And during the Upgrade Step, each player can buy 2 cards.

In the Shopping Step, after both players have chosen a hero for their shops, each player picks another hero. The player with the most R icons in their display goes first. You can sell items to both heroes in your shop, and both heroes will represent your shop in the Adventure Step.

In the Adventure Step, the monster is defeated when it receives 4 wounds instead of 2.
