Bananagrams Game Rules

I want to share some important rules with you for playing the game Bananagrams. It’s a fun word game that you can play with friends and family. To play, you’ll need a good vocabulary and some quick thinking skills. Let’s get started!

Setting Up the Game

First, you need to gather all the Bananagrams tiles and spread them out face-down on a table. Each player takes a certain number of tiles, depending on how many are playing. For 2 to 4 players, each player takes 21 tiles. For 5 to 6 players, each player takes 15 tiles.

Building Your Own Grid

Once everyone has their tiles, they can begin building their own personal grid, or crossword, in front of them. Flip all your tiles over, and when someone says, “Split!” you turn them over and start creating words.

To make a word, you have to connect your tiles. Each word must be connected, just like in a crossword, but the words don’t have to be connected to each other. You can rearrange your grid as often as you like.

Adding Up the Score

The score is important in Bananagrams. You want to have fewer tiles than anyone else. If you’ve used all your tiles and you’re sure all your words are real words, you call out, “Peel!” Then, every player must take one more tile from the center.

If you have a tile that you can’t use, you can say, “Dump!” and put it back in the center. But be careful – if other players see you dumping a tile, they can call out, “Bananas!” and you’ll have to take two more tiles.

The End of the Game

The game ends when there are fewer tiles left in the center than the number of players. At that point, someone might have used all their tiles and called out, “Bananas!” That’s when every player has to take one more tile. Once the center is empty, the game is over.

Now that you know the rules, it’s time to gather your friends and family and start playing Bananagrams. It’s a fast-paced and exciting game that will test your word skills. Good luck!

Okay, here’s what you need to do: Grab all 144 tiles and put them in a pile on the table, but make sure they’re facedown. We’ll call this the Bunch.

Now, each of us takes some tiles from the Bunch and puts them in front of us, also facedown. The number of tiles you take depends on how many players there are:

In the game of Bananagrams, the number of tiles each player receives depends on the number of people playing:

  • For 2-4 people: each player takes 21 letters.
  • For 5-6 people: each player takes 15 letters.
  • For 7 people: each player takes 11 letters.

How to Play

When everyone is ready, anyone can start the game by saying “SPLIT!” Then, all players turn their tiles face up and begin forming their own crossword collections of intersecting and connecting words. Remember:

Words can be horizontal or vertical, going from left to right or top to bottom. You have the flexibility to rearrange your own words as often as you like. There are no turns in Bananagrams – it’s a race to the finish! So, put on your thinking caps and let the word scramble begin!

When I’m playing a crossword game, and manage to use up all my letters, I get really excited and shout “PEEL!” Then, I grab a tile from the pile and add it to my collection of letters. It’s a fantastic feeling!

But here’s the thing: if I have a letter that’s giving me trouble, I can always give it back. I just have to say “DUMP!” and put it face-down in the pile. The best part is that I get to take three new letters to replace it. It’s like a little trade-off, and it doesn’t affect anyone else playing.

Game Over

We keep playing until there are fewer tiles in the bunch than there are players. Then the first player without any letters left shouts “BANANAS!” and wins the game!

But wait, it’s not over for the winner just yet! The other players check their hand to see if they have any misspelled or incorrect words. (Remember, you can’t use names or proper nouns. It’s only fair if we use a print or online dictionary).

If the words are okay, then that player is declared the WINNER.

If any word is not acceptable, then that player becomes the “ROTTEN BANANA” and is out of the game. They have to put their letters back face down into the bunch, and the rest of us keep playing.
