The Basics

In Azul: Joker Tiles, your goal is to create a beautiful pattern on your game board using colorful tiles. You can think of it as a puzzle where you get to be the artist!

Here’s how it works:

1. Setup: Each player starts with a game board and a tile storage area.
2. Tile Placement: On your turn, you may take tiles of the same color from the central factory display or from the broken tiles row. Then, you must place them on one of five pattern lines on your board. The goal is to fill complete rows or columns with tiles of the same color.
3. Joker Tiles: There are special joker tiles in the game that can be used as any color. They can be a real lifesaver when you’re in a tight spot!
4. Scoring: After placing tiles, you score points based on completed rows and columns. The more tiles you can place in one go, the more points you earn!
5. End of Round: The round ends when all tiles have been taken from the central factory display and the broken tiles row. The next round begins with new tiles being placed in the central factory display.

Strategy Tips

Now that you know the basics, let’s talk strategy:

• Plan Ahead: It’s important to think ahead and strategize your moves. Look for opportunities to complete multiple rows or columns with one placement.
• Keep an Eye on Other Players: Pay attention to what other players are doing. If you see that someone is close to completing a row or column, you might want to adjust your strategy to block them.
• Use Joker Tiles Wisely: The joker tiles can be a game-changer. Use them strategically to fill gaps and complete rows or columns.
• Don’t Forget About Scoring: Scoring points is crucial to winning the game. Make sure to keep track of your points and plan your moves accordingly.

Now that you have a good understanding of the rules and some strategy tips, it’s time to jump into the world of Azul: Joker Tiles. Have fun and may the best artist win!

In a game with 3 or 4 players, I take out 2 tiles of every color and add in 10 joker tiles. But in a game with just 2 players, I remove 1 tile of every color and put in 5 joker tiles.

Playing the Game

When it’s your turn, you have the choice to select tiles. You can either take all the joker tiles from one Factory display or the center of the table. If you choose this option, you can also pick all the tiles of another color from the same place, if there are any.

After you’ve made your selection, you must follow the regular rules and add the tiles you picked to one of your pattern lines. If there are any remaining tiles that don’t fit on the pattern line, you must place them on the floor line.

So here’s the deal: when you’re creating your pattern lines, you can use tiles of any color you want, and you can even throw in some joker tiles just to spice things up.

During the wall-tiling phase, when I have a complete pattern line that includes joker tiles, I need to rearrange the order of the tiles so that the rightmost space contains a joker tile. After that, I simply move that rightmost joker tile over to the corresponding line on the wall, just like I normally would.

Now, depending on what’s in the pattern line, I have different options for placing the joker tile on the wall. If the pattern line is made up entirely of joker tiles, I can place the joker tile onto any free space on the corresponding line on the wall. But if the pattern line includes another color, I should place the joker tile onto the space of that color, as long as I’m playing with the colored wall side.

Once the joker tile is in its new spot on the wall, I score as usual.

Now, there are a couple more rules to keep in mind. If a joker tile is already occupying a space on the wall of a certain color, I’m not allowed to place any more tiles of that color in the corresponding pattern line.

And finally, it’s important to note that any vertical or horizontal line on the wall can have multiple joker tiles in it.

Hey, did you know that when the game is over, the special joker tiles don’t count as any specific color?

Here’s an example to help you understand: let’s say you have 4 blue tiles and one joker tile in the blue spaces of your wall. Well, unfortunately, you won’t get those extra 10 points for having 5 tiles of the same color. Bummer, right?
