Getting Ready

Just remember that when it comes to interpreting the rules, a player with two characters is treated as two players with two separate turns.
  4. Take the basic action cards, shuffle them, and create an action deck.
  5. Do the same thing with the item cards. Shuffle them and create an item deck.

Reading Entries

Hey there! When I’m playing the Adventure Book or another game that tells me to go to a page in the Adventure Book, here’s what I do: I find that page and start by reading the first entry on that page. Guess what? It’s always titled “start.” Pretty straightforward, right? Now, here’s the catch: I never read a numbered entry on a page unless I’m specifically told to. Easy peasy!

Now, let’s talk about how to read other entries:

  • #image.jpg: Whenever I visit a space that matches the symbol, I read this entry. Simple as that!
  • #image.jpg: If I visit a matching space and the #image.jpg token is there, I read this entry. Keep an eye out for that token!
  • How to play Aftermath Official Rules UltraFoodMess: Ah, the Check Threat Step. I read this entry when things are safe and there are 4 or more black (threat) action cards on the threat track. Safety first!

I want to tell you about two specific things in this game that you should pay attention to. First, there are some cards with images on them. Traveling

But hey, remember, I can only move orthogonally – that means straight up and down or side to side – never diagonally. After I’ve moved to the new space, I need to turn to the page that’s listed there.

Oh, and here’s a tip to keep in mind: always remember where my mission location is. You know, that main mission card. The only way I can complete that mission is by traveling to that specific location and exploring the Adventure Book pages over there.

Oh, one more thing to note: Usually, it’s better to take the shortest route to my mission location. If I take longer routes, it’ll cost me more time, and it could even put my colony at a bigger risk. So, be mindful of that.

Leaving a Page

Now, here’s another thing – when all the characters who haven’t been defeated leave a page, or when the Adventure Book tells me to leave, I can go ahead and turn to the next page. Simple as that!

When you reach a point in the book that instructs you to turn to a new page, there are several things you need to do before moving on:

  1. First, you must finish the current player’s turn. This includes checking for any potential threats.
  2. Next, the bookkeeper passes the campaign dashboard to the player on their left. This person will now become the new bookkeeper and take the next turn.
  3. Then, you should remove all enemy figures and cards from the game. If the situation is hostile, you’ll need to place those figures and their cards in The Hunt box and remove any wounds from them.
  4. After that, it’s time to move all character figures back to their cards. Make sure to remove any remaining tokens from play, but don’t worry about returning them to the supply. Discard all cards on the threat track and group task slot, and reset the group task dial to 0.

Returning to a Page

So, here’s the deal: if you go back to a page you’ve already visited during the same mission, you won’t find any of those annoying tokens or entries that don’t have the How to play Aftermath Official Rules UltraFoodMessthingy. Just a heads up!

What’s Safe and What’s Not

Now, pay attention ’cause this is important. When you’re exploring, there are two types of situations: safe and hostile. And trust me, you wanna know which one you’re in. Let’s start with safe situations. Basically, when things are safe, enemy figures aren’t gonna bother you. They’re just strangers minding their own business. No moving, no attacking. Got it? Good. Hostile: In a hostile situation, the enemy figures are not open to reasoning, and they will move towards and attack you. If you manage to defeat or eliminate all of the enemies during a hostile situation, the situation will become safe.

Creating an Encounter

During encounters, enemies enter the game. To create an encounter, gather the enemy cards listed and mix them together. Then, place them face up on the threat track in the next available slots that are not already occupied by enemy cards.

Take each figure or token corresponding to those cards and place them on the designated spaces on the map. If the map has more than one space, distribute the enemy figures as evenly as possible among the available spaces. The encounter can be either hostile or safe, and you can flip the situation token to reflect the current state.

When I place enemy cards on the threat track, I need to remember that if a slot already has a threat card, I should place the enemy card over it, but still leave the threat card partly visible.

Now, let’s talk about random encounters. Sometimes, the game tells me to generate a random encounter with a specific type of enemy. When that happens, I collect all the non-boss enemy cards of that type, shuffle them, and then pick the encounter from those cards.

There are also encounter cards that can generate encounters for me. When I draw an encounter card, I reveal the top card from the encounter deck and discard it. Then, I generate the encounter based on that card.

When I gather enemy cards and figures for an encounter, I need to use the cards from the supply first. If I still need more, only then should I go to The Hunt box.

Encountering Roaches: Those pesky roaches may not have figures, but they still cause trouble! Each roach token represents a roach and has a life value of 1. Once a roach takes damage, it’s out of the game. When the last roach bites the dust, their enemy card is also removed.

Discovery Deck

Throughout your adventure, you’ll encounter new ways to engage with the world around you. When adding a new card to your deck, simply place it at the bottom without mixing things up. And when you’re instructed to retrieve a card that you’ve already collected, just disregard that request.

Let’s talk about gameplay. Your turn consists of five steps that you must complete in order.

Step 1 is the Draw. Draw cards until you have five action cards in your hand. But before you draw, if you already have action cards from a previous round, feel free to discard any or all of them.

If the action deck doesn’t have enough cards to bring your hand up to five, don’t worry. Just shuffle the discard pile and create a brand new action deck. Remember, if you ever find yourself with more than five action cards in your hand, you’ll need to discard down to the limit.

Next up is Step 2: Resolve Calamity.

If you draw the card, show it immediately and get rid of it. If a problem has already been solved on the current page of the book, the card doesn’t have any effect.

If a problem hasn’t been solved yet, roll the black die and add the result to the number on the time dial. If the total is equal to or higher than the number listed next to the problem, solve it.

The Hunt: When you come across The Hunt, here’s what you need to do: shuffle all the enemy cards in The Hunt box and deal them onto the threat track. Keep dealing until all the cards are gone or there are 5 enemies on the track.

Any cards that were not dealt get returned to the Hunt Box. If there are now enemies in play, things turn hostile. Just remember, enemies from The Hunt don’t have any loot, so don’t expect any.

3. Place Threat

When you draw any threat cards (the black ones), put them on the threat track in random order. Slot them in the spaces that don’t already have threat cards. If a slot already has an enemy card, slide the threat card under it so you can still see part of the threat card (check out the example on page 4).

4. Perform Actions

When you play a board game, you have action cards that allow you to take certain actions. On your turn, you can use any of your remaining action cards to perform actions. You can perform as many actions as you want, as many times as you want, as long as you still have the right cards to do so.

Hey there! When I’m trying to do something in this game, like a move or an action, I usually have to pass a skill test. There are two types of skill tests: regular and opposed.

Resolving a Regular Skill Test: So, when I want to take on a regular skill test, I need to have a matching attribute symbol and a difficulty value. First, I’ll play a card from my hand that has a symbol that matches the attribute. Sometimes, I can even use a white card which works for any skill test. Neat, right?

Now, here’s the fun part. I can also play more cards if I have them. These extra cards should either have the same COLOR (not necessarily the same attribute) or the same NUMBER value as the first card I played. Then, I roll the white resolution die. Finally, to get my total, I add up:

  • The value of all the cards that I played
  • Any bonus that my character’s card gives me for that attribute
  • Including any bonuses from equipped item cards, I add up the bonuses to a specific action or attribute.
  • I roll a die to determine the result.

If my total is equal to or greater than the difficulty value for the skill test, I succeed. If not, I fail.

When the group task dial matches or exceeds the difficulty of the task, I succeed. I read the success instructions in the Adventure Book and move on. Once I finish a group task, I reset the group task dial to 0 and remove the card from the group task slot. There’s no fail effect for group tasks, so I can focus on my success.

What You Can Do in the Game

Making Moves

When you want to move your character in the game, you need to follow these steps. First, place one or more action cards in front of you. These cards can be of any type. The total value of the action cards you play will determine how many movement points your character has.

If all the action cards you played have the same color, your character can cross a matching solid red, blue, or green line by using just 1 movement point. However, if the action cards you played have different colors, it will cost you 3 movement points to cross one of these lines.

You should keep in mind that you can see through solid white lines, but you cannot cross them. Double solid white lines cannot be seen through or crossed at all. And remember, your character can only move in straight lines and not diagonally.

I can freely move my character in and out of spaces that have enemies without any restrictions. I stop moving when I reach #image.jpg or #image.jpg entries.

Once I finish moving for any reason, I can place my character anywhere in the destination space, and I need to discard the action cards that I used for this movement.

When I want to make an Equip/Trade action, I simply discard one of my action cards and I can then move as many items as I want between my backpack and my equipment slots. So, if I need to exchange items with someone else who happens to be on the same space as me, I can easily do that too! But here’s the catch – the items that are traded must either be equipped right away or stored in my trusty backpack.

Now, here’s something important to keep in mind – an item’s bonus and effect will only be active if it’s actually equipped. So, make sure to equip those items if you want to benefit from their goodness!

Equipment Slots: When you play the game, you’ll have 5 different places where you can put items on your character: Head, Body, Paw, Paw, and Accessory.

You need to have open slots in order to put items on your character. If you don’t have any slots available, you’ll have to put the item in your character’s backpack. Your character’s backpack can hold up to 2 items that are not currently equipped.

If you can’t put an item on your character or in your backpack because there are no open slots, you’ll have to get rid of it. If an item has a “Stash” slot, it goes back in the box when you draw it.

The Fallen Foe

If I ever manage to reduce an enemy’s health to zero or below, that enemy is considered defeated. I triumphantly remove its figure from the game board and take its card off the threat track. Any enemy cards positioned below it on the track will promptly shift up to fill the empty spot, as if the enemy was never there.

If the encounter specifies a loot reward, I’ll be the lucky scavenger if I defeat the last enemy in that encounter. I’ll follow the same rules as I would for successfully scavenging a prize.

In a hostile situation, if the final enemy on the field is defeated or somehow removed from play, the situation will become safe. It’s a sigh of relief.

Topping the Boss: Each boss’s life value is precisely the number of characters in our party. A valuable piece of information for our strategy.

The Enemy’s Turn

When it’s time for the enemy’s turn, we start with the enemy at the top of the threat track and work our way down. Each enemy gets a turn to act, one by one, until all enemies have had their turn. Here’s what happens during an enemy’s turn:

The encounter can be either hostile or safe, and you can flip the situation token to reflect the current state.
