How to play Abyss Official Rules

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to the Abyss Game!

In this exciting adventure, I will guide you through the rules and mechanics of the game. So grab your imagination and let’s dive in!

Objective

The objective of the Abyss Game is to explore the mysterious depths of the ocean and collect as many treasures as you can. You’ll encounter fascinating creatures along the way, all while avoiding dangerous obstacles.

Setup

Before we begin, let’s set up the game. You will need a game board depicting the ocean floor, a set of treasure cards, a deck of creature cards, and a pawn to represent you on the board.

Gameplay

To start the game, shuffle the deck of creature cards and place it face down. Each player takes turns drawing a creature card and following the instructions on the card. These instructions could lead you to find a treasure, encounter a creature, or face a challenge.

Throughout the game, you’ll need to make strategic decisions. Should you risk facing a dangerous creature for the chance to find a rare treasure? Or should you play it safe and collect smaller treasures? The choice is yours.

As you progress through the Abyss, you’ll accumulate treasures. Each treasure is worth a certain number of points, so try to collect as many high-value treasures as you can.

Winning the Game

The game ends when all the creature cards have been drawn. Add up the points from your collected treasures and the player with the most points wins!

Remember, the Abyss is full of surprises and challenges. Keep your wits about you and make strategic choices to come out on top. Good luck and happy exploring!

Let me tell you about the awesome stuff you’ll find in the game box:

– There are 20 location tiles that you can use to build the game board.

– The game also includes 35 big size Lords cards that are 65x100mm in size.

– You’ll find 71 small size Allies cards that measure 42x63mm.

– We’ve included 50 plastic pearls that you can use during gameplay.

– There are also 20 Monster tokens for you to use.

– Keep an eye out for the 10 Key tokens.

– Of course, the game comes with a game board.

– You’ll also find a score pad to keep track of your progress.

– We’ve even included 5 Shell plastic cups.

– Don’t forget about the Threat Track and Threat Token.

– And lastly, there’s a rulebook to guide you through the game.

Now that you know what’s inside the box, let’s talk about how to set up the game.

Okay, here’s what you need to do:

1. Put the game board right in the middle of the table.

2. Take the Exploration cards and mix them up. Put the deck face down on the Exploration Track.

3. Take the Lord cards and mix them up too. Put the deck face down on the spot for Lords. Then, flip over the top six cards and put them in the Court.

4. Take the Location tiles and mix them up. Make a stack of them next to the game board. Then, flip over the top tile from the stack.

5. Take the Monster tokens and put them face down next to the game board.

6. Put the Threat token on the Threat Track exactly as shown.

Here’s what you need to do: put the ten Key tokens in a pile close to the board.

8. I take one Pearl from the supply and put it in my cup. The rest of the Pearls go in the other cups next to the board to make a “Treasury”.

9. We randomly decide who goes first.

Object of the Game

To become the King of Abyss, I need to have the most Influence Points (“IP”) by the end of the game.

I gain Influence Points by making alliances, recruiting Lords, and controlling Locations. Defeating Monsters also earns me Influence Points and the admiration of my peers.

Game Play

We take turns, going in a circle. On my turn, I follow these steps:

1. Plotting at Court (Optional): I can spend one or more Pearls to bring new Lords to Court.

Important Actions to Consider:

  1. Explore The Depths: Dive deep into the unknown and uncover hidden treasures!
  2. Request Support From The Council: Seek guidance and assistance from the wise council members.
  3. Recruit A Lord: Expand your influence by recruiting powerful lords to your side.

1. Plot at Court

Every turn, you have the option to pay one Pearl to the Treasury in exchange for adding a Lord to the Court. The Lord will occupy the furthest empty space available. This action can be repeated multiple times as long as you have enough Pearls and there are empty spaces in the Court. It’s a great way to strengthen your position and gain more allies.

However, there are a few conditions to keep in mind. If there are no empty spaces in the Court or if the Lord deck is empty, you won’t be able to Plot at Court. So make sure you plan ahead and seize the opportunity when it arises.

Step 2: Make a Move

When it’s my turn, I have to make a move. There are a few different actions I can choose from:

A. Dive into the Unknown

The first option is to explore the depths. I can dive down into the unknown, searching for new discoveries and treasures. This is an exciting choice, but it can also be risky. Who knows what I might find? It’s a mystery waiting to be solved.

B. Gather My Resources

Another option is to gather my resources. This means taking a moment to rest and replenish my energy. I can gather supplies, check my equipment, and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. It’s important to take care of myself and make sure I’m ready for anything.

C. Make a Plan

The third choice is to make a plan. I can strategize and come up with a game plan for the next phase of my adventure. This involves thinking ahead, considering different scenarios, and deciding on the best course of action. It’s like solving a puzzle and finding the most efficient way to progress.

Each of these actions has its own advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to me to weigh the risks and rewards and make the best decision based on the information I have. Sometimes it’s a tough choice, but that’s all part of the thrill and challenge of the game.

The Exploration card deck is composed of the following:

  • The Five Allied Races: Blue Squids, Green Shellfish, Red Crabs, Yellow Seahorses, and Purple Jellyfish.

Every Race consists of 13 cards. These cards are divided into different values: there’s one card with a value of 5, two cards with a value of 4, three cards with a value of 3, three cards with a value of 2, and four cards with a value of 1. Additionally, there are 6 Monsters!

When you go exploring, you reveal cards one at a time from the Exploration deck, placing them on the Exploration Track on the game board. Start from the space nearest to the deck and continue to the right. Here’s what you do when you reveal a card:

If the card is an Ally:

I’ll ask each player, one by one starting from me, if they want to buy this Ally from me. They can choose to pass or make a purchase.

The first player who decides to buy the card will pay me its cost and add the Ally card to their hand.

When you’re playing the game, the cost to get an Ally goes up each time you buy one. The first Ally you buy costs 1 Pearl. The second Ally costs 2 Pearls, and the third Ally costs 3 Pearls. It doesn’t matter who buys the Allies.

Here’s an important thing to remember: your opponents can only buy one Ally during your turn. If no one else wants to buy the Ally, you have two options. You can add it to your hand for free, which means your turn is over. Or you can leave it on the board and reveal the next card. Then you have to offer the new card for sale.

If all the spots on the Exploration Track have Allies on them, and no one wants to buy the last Ally you revealed, you have to add it to your hand. You also get one Pearl.

Now, let’s talk about what happens if the card you reveal is a Monster.

You have two options: fight the monster or continue exploring.

If you choose to fight, you automatically win and the monster is gone. You’ll receive a reward based on the Threat Track. This could include pearls taken from the Treasury, Influence Points from a randomly drawn Monster token (which you keep face down), or keys.

Certain spaces on the Threat Track give you a choice between different rewards. Once you defeat the monster, put the Threat token back on the first space. Your turn is over.

If you want to keep going, just move the Threat token up one space and keep showing cards. But wait! If a Monster shows up on the last space, you have to fight it! You’ll get a reward from the Threat Track, and you’ll also get a Pearl.

Depending on where the Threat token is on the Threat track, you’ll get different rewards when you battle the Monster:

If the Threat token is on the 1st space, you can choose between winning 1 Pearl or 1 Monster token.

If the Threat token is on the 2nd space, you have more options. You can win 2 Pearls or 1 Monster token and 1 Pearl or 2 Monster tokens.

If the Threat token is on the 3rd space, you win 1 Key token.

If the Threat token is on the 4th space, you have a choice. You can win 1 Key token and 1 Pearl or 1 Key token and 1 Monster token.

If the Threat token is on the 5th space, you have even more options. You can win 1 Key token and 2 Pearls or 2 Key tokens and 1 Pearl and 1 Monster token or 1 Key token and 2 Monster tokens.

If the Threat token is on the 6th space, you win 2 Key tokens.

When I’m playing the game, the first thing I do is show everyone the first card. I give it to the other players to see if they want to buy it. If they don’t, I have the option to take it for myself. But honestly, I’d rather keep looking and see what else is out there.

So here’s what happens next: I flip over another card. This time, the two players after me decide to pass, but the third player is willing to pay me a Pearl to take this ally card for themselves.

So here’s what happened: I, the active player, had to reveal another card for my exploration. And guess what? It turned out to be a Monster! But instead of fighting it, I decided to keep on exploring. The cool thing is, even though I didn’t fight the Monster, the Threat tracker still went up by one space. And yep, you guessed it, the Monster stayed right where it was.

So, here’s the deal. I start a game with three other players. We each have a deck of cards, and we take turns drawing cards and playing them. Each turn, we draw a card from the top of our deck and add it to our hand. Then, we reveal a fourth card, which is up for grabs.

But here’s the twist: the first person to buy an Ally card this turn gets that fourth card. And guess what? The cost to buy it is just 2 Peals. It’s like a special bonus for being the fastest to snatch it up. And it’s even cooler because it’s the second Ally purchased this turn.

Isn’t that neat? It adds an extra layer of strategy to the game. You have to decide if you want to go for that fourth card or focus on something else. It’s a tough call sometimes. But hey, that’s part of the fun!

When it’s my turn to play, I reveal three cards that my opponents can’t afford or aren’t interested in. I also don’t want those cards. However, the seventh card I reveal goes on the last space of the board.

I don’t have a choice – I have to take that card and add it to my hand. As a bonus, I get to take a Pearl from the Treasury. Then, my turn is over.

Exploration Ends

Once I decide whether to add an Ally to my hand or fight a Monster, my turn is done. If there are any Allies left on the Exploration Track, I place them face down in the “Council” area of the board, according to their Race. Any Monsters go in the Exploration discard pile.

Note: If the Exploration card deck runs out, create a new deck by shuffling all the cards in the discard pile.

B. Seek Help From The Council

When you seek assistance from the Council, you get to take all the cards from one stack in the Council without knowing what they are beforehand! Then, you can add them to your hand.

Recruit A Lord

Guess what? I just learned about an amazing game called “Recruit A Lord”! It’s super intriguing because it lets you recruit powerful Lords from different races. These Lords are incredibly skilled and belong to one of the 6 unique guilds, each with its own area of expertise.

Soldiers are somewhat unpopular and have a lower value in terms of Influence Points, but they possess abilities that can be advantageous when facing off against your adversaries.

Mages have a special talent for getting help from the Allied Races.

As a farmer, I may not possess any superpowers, but my role is undoubtedly significant. I hold the ability to accumulate numerous Influence Points by cultivating the Sargasso, a coveted and nurturing algae that everyone desires.

Politicians, love them or hate them, they play a crucial role in our society. They are the individuals we entrust with the power to make decisions that impact our lives. And while they may sometimes be seen as untrustworthy or self-serving, it is important to remember that they have the ability to elevate and regenerate society’s response to various challenges.

When someone takes on the role of a politician, they are tasked with the responsibility of representing the interests and concerns of their constituents. This means being well-versed in a wide range of issues, from education and healthcare to the economy and the environment. It is no easy feat, and politicians often find themselves in the position of having to make difficult decisions that can impact the lives of many.

But despite the challenges they face, politicians have an important role to play in our democracy. They provide a platform for individuals to have their voices heard and their concerns addressed. They have the power to shape policies and laws that can make a real difference in the lives of everyday people.

Furthermore, politicians are crucial in holding the government accountable. They are the ones who ask the tough questions and ensure transparency and fairness in the decision-making process. They act as a check against corruption and abuse of power.

Without politicians, our system of government would be incomplete. They act as the intermediaries between the people and the policies that govern their lives. They are the ones who bridge the gap between citizens and the institutions that shape our society.

So, while it is true that politicians are widely disliked and often subject to scrutiny, it is important to recognize the vital role they play in our society. They may not always be perfect, but their presence is a necessary part of our democratic system.

Ambassadors are an incredible asset that can help you gain control of the most desirable Locations with ease. They are like your secret weapon when it comes to expanding your influence.

Hey there! Let me break down the info on the Lord cards for you:

First off, you’ll see the name of the Lord. Simple enough, right?

Next up, we’ve got the recruitment cost. This tells you how much you need to bring this Lord into your team.

But here’s where it gets interesting! There are these bubbles on the card that give you more details:

  • Check out the total number of bubbles. It shows you how many different Race types you need. Each bubble represents one type.
  • The big bubble? That’s the mandatory Race. You gotta have this one.
  • Now, the smaller bubbles are for you to choose. They give you options for the other Race types you can include.
  • And lastly, the number below the bubbles. That’s the total Allies value you need to recruit that Lord. Keep an eye on it!

C. The Power of the Lord:

If you see an arrow next to the Power, it means that the Power is only used once when you recruit the Lord. If there is no arrow, the Power is semi-permanent and will last until you use the Lord to control a Location (in that case, the Power is hidden by the Location).

D. Some Lords have a Key symbol that allows them to control a Location.

E.Finally, each Lord you recruit will give you a certain number of Influence Points!

On your turn, you can choose to recruit one of the Lords available at Court. To recruit a Lord, you need to play enough Allies from your hand to pay the costs shown on the Lord card (see inset).

  • You must play the exact number of different Races required (no more and no less).
  • You can play multiple Allies from the same Race.

I’ve got some important tips about playing the game Allies. Let me break it down for you:

1. The value of the Allies you play can be more than what you need, but you won’t get any “change” back. Those extra points are just lost.

2. If you need more points to recruit Allies, you can spend Pearls. You still have to play at least one Ally from each required Race, but if the total value of your cards isn’t high enough, you can spend a Pearl for each missing point. Remember, Pearls are paid to the Treasury.

When you recruit a Lord, all of the Ally cards you used are placed in the Exploration discard pile, except for the one with the lowest value. That Ally becomes “affiliated” with your cause and is placed face up in front of you. If you discard multiple Allies with the same lowest value, you get to choose which one to keep.

These affiliated Allies stay in front of you for the entire game. You can’t use them to recruit Lords, but they do count towards your final tally of Influence Points.

Lord Powers:

Once you pay the recruitment fees, you can place the Lord in front of you, and they become available for use

Most Lords have a special ability that is triggered immediately when you recruit them, but it can only be used once. You can identify these abilities by the arrow symbol.

Some Lords have a “semi-permanent” ability that remains in effect until you use them to control a Location. These abilities do not have the arrow symbol.

Note: When you control a Lord, you get to decide when to activate their semi-permanent ability during your turn.

Refill The Court:

After you recruit a Lord, move the remaining Lords in the Court to the right. Try to keep any empty spaces as close to the deck as possible. If there are at least three Lords left in the Court, the recruited Lord will not be immediately replaced.

It’s a bit perplexing, but let me explain. You see, when there are only two Lords remaining in the game, something special happens. You actually get two Pearls! Pretty cool, huh? And not only that, but all the empty spaces in the Court need to be filled up too. How do you do that? Well, you simply turn over Lord cards from the top of the deck until all the empty spaces are gone. Easy peasy, right? So even though it may seem a bit strange, this rule adds a burst of excitement to the game. It’s like getting a little bonus for reaching the end. Pretty neat, if you ask me!

I’m going to give you a step-by-step guide on how to win the game of Monopoly. It’s important to note that each player has their own unique style and strategy, so what works for one person may not work for another. That being said, here are some tips to help you come out on top:

1. Making Powerful Allies: When it comes to choosing your Allies, there are a few factors you should take into account. Look for Allies that have high value, and make sure to have a mix of different Races. For example, let’s say I am playing as the Master of Magic. I would choose to use my jellyfish Ally with a value of 3, my crab Ally with a value of 2, and my shell Ally with a value of 5. This gives me a total value of 10 with 3 different Races, with at least one of them being from the jellyfish Race. I would then align my crab Ally with a value of 2.

2. Master the Slaver: Another strategy you can use is to focus on the Slaver character. With this character, you can use two shell Allies with a total value of 6. You can also complete the game by using two Pearls. Afterward, you can align your shell Ally with a value of 1.

3. Take Control of Locations: Once you have collected three Keys, you should immediately take control of a Location. Remember, you can gain Keys by recruiting a Lord with a Key symbol or by fighting a Monster during Exploration. Once you have the Keys, make sure to secure your control over a Location.

By following these strategies, you will have a better chance of winning the game. Just remember to adapt your gameplay based on your opponents and always stay one step ahead. Good luck!

When I come across a Location, I’m always on the lookout for three things: The name, a symbol, and Influence Points.

The name tells me where I am, giving me a sense of direction and purpose.

The symbol provides a clue, a little hint on how to gain influence points with this Location. It’s like a secret code waiting to be deciphered.

And the influence points? Well, they’re the golden tickets of the game. The more influence points I collect, the closer I get to victory.

So, when I seize control of a Location, I have the power to make things happen. I can shape the game, mold it like clay in my hands. It’s an exhilarating feeling, knowing that I have the ability to alter the course of the game.

I can’t help but wonder, what will this Location bring? What secrets does it hold? What strategies can I employ to gather influence points? It’s like diving into a treasure chest full of possibilities, eager to uncover the hidden gems.

And that’s the beauty of the game. Each Location is a new adventure, an untapped well of excitement. With every move, I’m one step closer to victory. Each decision I make, each move I take, it all counts towards my ultimate goal – winning the game.

  • You can pick one of the face up Locations or draw 1, 2, 3, or 4 Locations and choose one from the cards you drew. The remaining cards are placed face up next to the board for future turns. Remember, giving yourself more options means giving more choices to your opponents!
  • Place the Location you chose in front of you. Slide any Lords used to control that Location underneath it, so their Powers are covered and cannot be used for the rest of the game.

Also, the Key(s) on that Lord is used, and cannot be used again.

When a Location is occupied by a Lord, it loses its “freedom” and cannot be targeted by any other Lord’s Power. However, these occupied Locations still hold value, as indicated by the Influence Points on their cards at the end of the game.

If you used any Key tokens acquired from fighting Monsters, they are simply returned to the pile and discarded. In the event that you acquire multiple Key tokens simultaneously and end up with more than three Keys in your possession (including those given by Lords), you can choose which Keys you want to use to gain control of a Location.

Note: Some Lords, known as Ambassadors, have 3 Keys which enable them to independently control a Location. In this case, remember to hide the power of the Ambassador by placing it underneath the Location.

Wrapping Up Your Turn

Once you’ve finished your required tasks, your turn is done. The person sitting to your left then starts their turn, going through the same steps. We keep taking turns until one of the game-ending conditions is met.

Game End

The game comes to an end when one of the following things happens:

  • Any player recruits their 7th Lord; Or
  • Any player recruits a Lord and there aren’t enough Lord cards left to fully refill the Court.

In either case, the player whose turn it is completes their turn as usual. Then, each of the other players gets to take one final turn.

Lastly, each player must put down (affiliates) their lowest-value Ally from any remaining Races in their hand. If they have any other Allies in hand, they have to get rid of them.

Now it’s time for everyone to add up their Influence Points. You earn points from:

When it comes to winning the game, there are a few factors to consider. First, the locations you control play a crucial role. By strategically controlling certain areas, you can gain an advantage over your opponents. Next, the lords you have recruited also contribute to your chances of success. Choose your lords wisely, as they can greatly impact your gameplay. Another important factor is the strongest affiliated ally from each race. Aligning yourself with powerful allies can give you the edge you need to come out on top. And finally, don’t forget about the monster tokens you hold. These tokens can be used strategically to gain an advantage over your opponents.

Ultimately, the player with the highest influence point total will be crowned the winner. But in the event of a tie, the tied player with the most pearls will take the lead. And if there’s still a tie after that, the player with the highest value lord will be the ultimate victor. So, keep these factors in mind as you strategize your way to victory. Good luck!

Good luck!
