In Risk, I’m competing against human opponents, and they have their own thoughts! Each player has weaknesses that I can exploit. Unlike chess, my goal in Risk is not to find the perfect move, but to find a way to control my opponent’s mind.

Conquering Continents

It’s always a good idea to aim for capturing an entire continent that doesn’t have too many borders to defend. South America and Australia are good examples of this, but every player wants to go for these continents. Europe and North America may seem difficult to conquer at first, but it’s not impossible. If I find myself in a favorable situation to do this early on, I should definitely go for it. However, never directly target Asia. That’s a suicide mission.

Once you’ve figured out which areas you have, you need to decide which continent you’ll battle for. This decision will determine where you place your armies. However, be careful not to put all your eggs in one basket. Avoid continents where other players have a strong presence. While it may seem obvious to go for a continent where you already control most of the territories, it’s not always the best choice.

Regardless of which continent you choose, you’ll have to hold onto it for several rounds. The sooner you can do this, the better. Always keep a sufficient number of armies to defend your borders. Otherwise, another player may attack your continent to prevent you from gaining the extra bonus armies.

When it’s my turn in the game, I always make sure to place my new armies on the border regions. Those armies in the middle of a continent? Useless, I tell you. So, I move them to the borders because an extra army can be a great deterrent.

A Game of Surprise

My opponents are definitely plotting their strategic moves. If they succeed, I’ll be in big trouble.

Make them think they’re in control

When it comes to Risk, aggressive players dominate, and diplomacy won’t help you with them. But don’t worry about those opponents because what really matters is who has the actual control of the game.

An extremely aggressive player won’t end up with many allies or friends. Behind the scenes, you should seek out allies and plan an action to teach the aggressive player a lesson.

It also doesn’t matter if the other players think you’re weak. Use this as an advantage to strengthen your position and stay out of the spotlight.

Carefully Plan Your Route

Players should always keep their armies together as much as possible, especially when planning an attack.

It’s important to determine the route carefully so that you don’t have to leave any troops behind unnecessarily during the attacks.

Let’s say you have more than 30 armies in the Middle East and you want to conquer the entire continent of Africa. Well, the best strategy is to start by attacking East Africa. After that, you should go for Madagascar, South Africa, Congo, North Africa, and finally Egypt. When you move into Egypt, it is a good idea to leave about one-third of your armies in North Africa for defense. And don’t forget, you can also send another third of your armies back to the Middle East for reinforcements.

By doing this, you make sure that all the border areas of Africa are well protected, increasing your chances of holding onto the continent. Of course, if a bigger threat arises from Brazil, for example, you can always leave more troops in North Africa or even launch an attack on Brazil.

It’s all about diplomacy and finding the right balance between offense and defense. The key is to think strategically and adapt to the ever-changing circumstances of the game. Good luck!

If a player owns more than half of the armies, they need to be careful not to be attacked by all their opponents. The weaker players have no other option because otherwise they will lose.

For example, if a player owns North and South America, they will receive enough extra armies each turn to eliminate their opponents one by one. This is the best approach because for each eliminated player, they will have to fight against 3 fewer armies in each turn.

The strong player should play the strategy of “divide and conquer,” while the weaker players should think, “together we are strong.”

Of course, weaker players will end their collaboration once the power of the strong player diminishes. At any moment, you should consider which relationships you will maintain with your opponents and use diplomacy to survive.

If you can get another player to do things that are in your best interest, it can really lead to victory in the game.

Start in Asia

At the beginning of the game, almost all players will ignore Asia because this continent is so difficult to hold. So, place all of your armies in one central area on this continent, but don’t intend to conquer the entire continent.

Each turn, the goal is to reinforce your large army and conquer one extra territory to receive additional cards.

Forget about the other players fighting over continents, especially in Africa and Australia. In that struggle, they’ll lose many armies while you increase the power of yours.

Move your army slowly but surely towards the continent you hope to conquer. And when one player manages to conquer the entire continent, that’s when you strike. Usually, the player is weakened after having to eliminate an opponent. So, take advantage of their temporary weakness.

Timing is crucial in this situation. If you move too quickly towards the target continent, your opponents will catch on.

Usually, the perfect time to launch your major attack is right after you’ve exchanged some good cards. That way, you’ll have enough armies to completely take over a continent in one turn without losing too many armies in the process.
