The game board I’m talking about here looks like the table of a captain on a medieval merchant ship. It’s really cool! What you’ll notice right away are nine cities of the Mediterranean, all laid out for us to explore. Now, let’s take a closer look at them.
Each city has a top row that’s made up of two harbor spaces and two building sites for fortresses. Those harbor spaces come with a cost, by the way. They tell us how much it’ll take to build a warehouse in that city. As for the fortress spaces, they also have a number, but this time it’s the cost to build a fortress in that city.
Now let’s move onto the other spaces. You’ll see that they make a U-shape around the picture of the city. These spaces right here are the building sites for the warehouses – except for the very last space on the right. All of these sites have a number, too. And this time, the number represents the money you’ll make on each payday if you have a warehouse there.
But wait, there’s more! On the right side of the game board, we have two banking spaces. One is the bank harbor and the other is the proliferation chart. We’ll put the loan cards on those spaces. And speaking of the proliferation chart, it’s really important. It shows us how much money we’ll get on payday based on how many cities we have warehouses in. The chart is split into two columns. The left column tells us the number of cities we have warehouses in, while the right column shows the money we’ll make from those warehouses on each payday.
Isn’t it all quite fascinating? It’s like we’re diving into a whole new world of merchant ships and bustling cities. I can’t wait to explore it all!
Example: I just finished the first phase of the game and I did something pretty awesome. I built warehouses in four different cities! So now it’s payday and guess what? I get to earn 10 Florin from my warehouses. How cool is that?
Welcome to the world of Tanger! In this game, you’ll have the chance to explore and conquer new cities. Let me show you what you’ll find on your journey.
A) Destination Cards: These cards will guide you on your quest. They contain information about the cities you need to visit and the rewards you’ll receive for completing your travels.
B) Face Down Deck: This is where your supply of destination cards is kept. Draw cards from here to add to your collection.
C) Discard Pile: After you visit a city and complete your task, place your destination cards here. Don’t worry; you’ll get new ones to replace them.
D) Proliferation Bonus Cards: These cards provide additional benefits when you complete certain tasks. Keep an eye out for them along your journey.
E) Coins: In Tanger, you’ll need coins to fund your adventures. Use them wisely to achieve your goals.
F) Tanger: This is one of the nine cities awaiting your exploration. Seek it out and see what it has to offer.
G) Proliferation Chart: Keep track of your progress on this chart. Each city you conquer will bring you closer to victory.
H) Loan Cards: In desperate times, you may need a little financial help. These cards can provide you with a loan to keep you going.
I) Bank Harbor Space: This is where you can trade in your coins for additional benefits. Make sure you utilize this space wisely.
J) City Interconnection Cards: These cards represent the different paths you can take between cities. Choose your route carefully to maximize your efficiency.
K) Face Down Deck: Draw cards from here to expand the city you’re visiting. Who knows what secrets lie within?
L) Discard Pile: After you’ve used a card, place it here. Don’t worry; you’ll find new cards to replenish your collection.
Prepare yourself, brave explorer, and embark on this thrilling adventure through the cities of Tanger. The paths await, and the rewards are within your grasp. Good luck!
A Harbor:
These are the two spaces where ships are docked. If you want to build a warehouse or a fortress in this city, you need to park your ship in one of these two harbor spaces. The number on each space shows the cost of building a warehouse in that particular city. If your ship is in the first harbor space, you have to pay 4 Florin for each warehouse. If your ship is in the second harbor space, the cost is 5 Florin per warehouse.
B Fortress:
To build a fortress, you must have your ship on one of the harbor spaces. At least one of the two fortress spaces must be empty. If you build on the first fortress space, it will cost you 8 Florin. Once you’ve paid, you can place your fortress there. This space is then blocked for the rest of the game. Building on the second fortress space costs 10 Florin.
C First Two Warehouses:
These two spaces are where the first two warehouses are built. The player who builds the first warehouse gets to choose whether to build it on the first or second space.
D Shutdown Space:
In a 2 or 3-player game, the space with the darker triangle is an additional shutdown space. However, it doesn’t have any meaning in a 4 or 5-player game.
E Shutdown Spaces:
The dark-colored spaces are known as shutdown spaces. When you build your warehouse on one of these spaces, it shuts down the first warehouse in the warehouse chain. The shut down warehouse is then placed in the center picture of the city. On payday, this warehouse no longer counts towards proliferation or majority.
F Last Building Site:
This is the last space where you can build a warehouse.
G Restricted Building Space:
No warehouse can be placed on this space.
Sailing Cards
- Destination and Sea Route Cards
- City Interconnection Cards
Destination and Sea Route Cards
These cards have two different uses:
Destination card: You sail directly to a free harbor space in the city named on the card. The card itself shows where the city is on the captain’s table.
Sea route card: You set sail from the city where your ship is currently anchored. You can travel to as many cities as there are seals shown on the card.
Each seal allows you to sail to the next city along a horizontal or perpendicular line. If there is more than one seal, you can sail to as many cities as there are seals or fewer. You can make horizontal and perpendicular turns as you move (rectangular turns are allowed).

The red seals determine how many routes you can take from any city. The cost of the card is how much you need to pay to buy it. The destination is the city you can sail directly to from any starting point – whether it’s a city, the bank, or the beginning of the game. The city’s location is where it is on the game board.
With this card, you can sail straight to Marseille, no matter where your ship is. Alternatively, you can move up to three routes from your current location. If your ship is in Valencia, for instance, you can reach any city on the game board.
City Interconnection Cards
These cards are less expensive, but they only allow you to sail between two specific cities. Let’s say you buy the Venezia – Tanger card. You’ll have to pay 3 Florin to the bank, but you can only sail between Venice and Tangier.
Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome card I found. It’s called the “Venizia-Tanger Card”. This card has a really cool feature: it allows you to sail once from either Venezia to Tanger or from Tanger to Venezia.
Now, there’s a small catch. You can only use this card if your ship is currently in one of these two cities mentioned on the card. Pretty neat, right?
Have you ever wondered about the price of a card? Well, let me tell you about it.
To sail from Venezia to Tanger or vice versa, you need this card.
On the game board, you can find the two cities in question.
