As the first timid rays of light peek over the horizon, they slowly reveal the world around us. Shadows dissipate, colors come alive, and the world awakens from its slumber. It’s as if the rising sun breathes life into everything it touches.

In many other cultures, the sun is a symbol of warmth, light, and positivity, enlightening our lives and guiding us on our journey.
A Source of Energy
The sun is not only a mesmerizing sight but also plays a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. Its rays provide us with warmth, light, and energy. From the earliest civilizations to our modern times, humans have harnessed the power of the sun for various purposes, from heating and illumination to sustainable energy generation.

Contemplating the rising sun offers a profound opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth. Its mesmerizing beauty can evoke a sense of wonder and awe within us, reminding us of the vastness and interconnectedness of the universe.

In the center of the board, you’ll find the Map of Japan, which serves as the main stage for the game’s conflicts.
Now, let’s talk about the Political Mandate Slots. These slots are where players place their chosen Political Mandates during their turn. They go from left to right, giving each player a chance to make their move.
Moving on to the Shrine Slots. At the beginning of each game, four random Shrine tiles are placed in these slots. These tiles represent the Shrines that the Clans can worship to gain Honor. Each Clan has its own Shinto marker, and they can go to different Shrines to worship the various Kami.
Next, we have the Kami Turn Symbols. When the Political Phase reaches one of these symbols, a Kami Turn happens. During this turn, the Shrines are resolved from left to right, one by one.
Lastly, let’s talk about the Honor Track. This track keeps track of the relative Honor between the Clans. It’s an important aspect of the game and influences the gameplay and strategy.
I want to talk to you about an important aspect of Clan Honor. You see, there are these special slots that we use to represent the relative Honor between the different Clans. When one Clan has its marker above another Clan’s marker, it means that the first Clan has more Honor than the second Clan.
The Meaning Behind the Tea Ceremony
At the start of each season, something magical happens – the Tea Ceremony. It’s a special event where powerful alliances are formed and destinies intertwine.
The Path to Power
Throughout the game, there are key moments known as the Political Phase. These moments are represented by slots and symbols that guide us through the twists and turns of the political landscape.
An Empire Divided
Imagine a map divided into eight different provinces. These provinces are marked by thick, colored lines. They represent the borders that shape our empire. Figures and strongholds can occupy these provinces, becoming integral parts of our strategy.
Connected by Commerce
Hidden within the map, you’ll find shipping routes. These lines connect certain provinces and act as pathways for our figures to move. It’s as if these provinces are right next to each other, thanks to these convenient routes.
Rewards Await
Take a closer look at each province, and you’ll notice hexagonal symbols attached to them. These symbols represent the rewards we can reap when we successfully harvest a province. Coins, victory points, and Ronin tokens await those who are skilled enough to claim them.
Boundaries that Shape Us
If two Provinces are next to each other, you can see it because there will be a two-colored Border line between them. Pieces can move between these Provinces by crossing these Border lines.
Each Province has a slot where you can put a War Number token. This token reminds us if a Battle will happen in that Province during this Season, and where it will be in the War order.
When we get to the symbol that represents the end of the Political Phase, the War Phase starts.
These slots are used to keep track of each Clan’s Victory Points (VP) during the game. If a Clan goes past the 50 slot, their marker goes back to the 1 slot and is flipped upside down to remind us to add 50 VP to their score.
These slots are for the War Provinces.
When a new Season begins, we mix up the Battles that will happen during the War Phase. This is done by putting some War Province tokens in these slots, matching the current Season.
Clan Screens
On the Clan Screen for each Clan, you can find all the important information about that Clan. During the Political Phase, the screen should not hide anything. But during the War Phase, players’ bids remain hidden behind the Screens, while everything else is visible.
Special Clan Ability
Each Clan has a unique ability that gives them an advantage throughout the game.
Starting Honor Rank
This shows where each Clan starts on the Honor Track at the beginning of the game.
Home Province
Every Clan begins the game with a Daimyo, a Bushi, and a Stronghold in their designated Home Province.
Clan Figures Reminders
This section reminds players about the special characteristics of the different Clan Figures.
End Of Game Bonus
Hey there! Just wanted to remind you about the cool bonus you get in the game when you collect War Province tokens from as many different Provinces as possible. It’s a great way to boost your victory points at the end of the game.
Sweet Extra Income
At the beginning of each Season, you start with the exact number of Coins shown on your Clan Screen. That’s your starting stash.
The Gang’s All Here
Your Clan comes with some awesome figures, ten to be exact. You’ve got 1 Daimyo, 3 Shinto, and 6 Bushi. When they’re not in action, keep them hanging out in Reserve next to your Clan Screen. If any of them bite the dust in battle, they’ll respawn there.
Every figure in the game packs a punch with 1 Force, unless a specific Season card you’ve snagged says otherwise. Easy peasy.
To tell your figures apart, stick a black counter base on your Daimyo and white ones on your Shinto. That way, you can spot them in the heat of the game.
Bushi: These are the soldiers that fight on foot. They don’t have any special powers. Each Clan has two different appearances for their Bushi, but they all function in the same way.

Shinto: These mystical fighters can engage in combat just like any other Bushi, but they have a unique power: when I recruit them, I can decide whether to send them to worship a Kami or let them stay on the Map.
#image.jpg
Daimyo: I’m the leader of your forces, your most reliable figure. You can count on me, as I cannot be taken hostage by other players and cannot be removed from the map by a betray action. I’m also immune to other special effects, like a monster’s ability to automatically kill a figure.
Monsters: These legendary creatures can join your clan when you decide to train them. To do so, just take a train action. Once acquired, attach one of your clan’s color bases to the monster. The monster is then summoned to one of your strongholds and becomes a part of your clan for the entirety of the game.
If a monster is killed, don’t worry! It goes to your reserve. There’s no limit to the number of monsters your clan can have, even if you run out of color bases for them. Each monster comes with a special ability that’s described on its season card. Just keep in mind that their force remains at 1, unless otherwise stated.
Season Cards
Did you know that season cards are split into three different seasons: Spring, Summer, and Autumn? These cards provide unique abilities to the Clans that use them.
The core season cards are a bit different. You can identify them by the lack of a special symbol on the back. These core cards are essential and must be included in every game.
Hey there! Let me tell you something cool about these card sets. You see, each show has its own unique symbol on the back. It’s like a little secret code that helps you identify them. Pretty neat, huh?
Now, here’s where the fun really begins. Every time we play a game, we get to choose or randomly pick one set of season cards. These special cards will be added to our core cards, and they’ll bring a whole new twist to the game. It’s like adding a pinch of spice to your favorite recipe!

I’m here to tell you about the different types of cards that are available. You may be wondering, what are these cards? Well, let me explain.
There are many different types of cards out there, each serving a unique purpose. One type of card is a credit card. It’s a convenient way to make purchases, and you can pay off the balance over time. Another type of card is a debit card. This card is linked to your bank account, and when you make a purchase, the money is taken directly from your account.
Another type of card is a gift card. These cards are preloaded with a certain amount of money, and you can use them to buy items at specific retailers. They make great gifts because the recipient can choose what they want to buy.
One type of card that you may be familiar with is a rewards card. These cards allow you to earn points or cash back when you make purchases. You can then redeem these rewards for discounts or free items. It’s like getting a little something extra every time you use your card.
Lastly, there are also prepaid cards. These cards are similar to gift cards in that you load money onto them, but they can be used anywhere that accepts card payments. They are a great way to budget and control your spending.
So, as you can see, there are many different types of cards to choose from. Whether you’re looking for convenience, rewards, or a way to budget, there’s a card out there for you. It’s important to understand the different options and choose the one that best fits your needs. By using the right card, you can make your purchases with ease and maybe even get some extra perks along the way.
Leveling Up (green) – These cards make your Clan stronger by granting special abilities to your figures and actions.

Blue virtue cards offer you the opportunity to earn additional Victory Points or other rewards when certain conditions are met.

When it comes to the game, there are special cards called Monster (brown) cards that you definitely want to consider. These cards will give your Clan a powerful Monster figure that has a special ability.

War Upgrade (red): These cool cards give you awesome perks that activate at the beginning of every War Phase.
Winter Upgrade (light blue) – These cards give you extra Victory Points when certain conditions are met at the end of the game.
Honor
Honor is a powerful force in Rising Sun. When I have high Honor, I gain various advantages. On the other hand, when my Honor is low, I might gain the support of the more sinister aspects of the world. However, above everything else, Honor is the ultimate decider in resolving conflicts.
In the top left corner of the board, you’ll find the Honor Track. It’s used to keep track of each Clan’s Honor and how they compare to each other. The Clan with their marker at the top of the Honor Track has the highest Honor, while the Clan at the bottom has the lowest Honor. If a Clan’s marker is above another Clan’s marker, it means they have higher Honor. On the other hand, if a Clan’s marker is below another Clan’s marker, it means they have lower Honor.
The most important thing about Honor is this:
Whenever there is a tie, the player with the highest Honor wins.
This applies to any situation where there is a tie. It could be comparing players’ Force in a Province during a Harvest or a Battle, comparing their Force on a Shrine during a Kami Turn, or comparing their Coins on a War Advantage during a Battle. If players are tied, their Honor is checked. The player higher on the Honor Track wins the dispute.
When it comes to timing conflicts for executing abilities, it’s crucial to consider the concept of Honor. In these situations, the player known as the “Honor holder” gets to decide whether they want to act first or go last.
Earning and Losing Honor
There are many actions that can make you either gain or lose Honor in the game. Honor is a measure of how respected a Clan is compared to other Clans. No two Clans can have the same level of Honor.
When a Clan gain Honor, their marker on the Honor Track moves up by one slot. At the same time, the Clan marker that was above them moves down by one slot. But if a Clan is already at the top of the Honor Track, gaining Honor doesn’t do anything.
For instance: When the TURTLE Clan gains Honor, its marker moves up, and the LOTUS marker above it moves down.
Whenever a Clan loses Honor, its marker moves down 1 slot on the Honor Track. Simultaneously, the Clan marker below it moves up 1 slot. If a Clan is already at the bottom of the Honor Track (excluding any empty slots at the bottom), losing Honor has no impact.
Take this scenario: The LOTUS Clan loses Honor, so its marker is moved down, and the DRAGONFLY marker below it is moved up.
Negotiation
In Rising Sun, we’re encouraged to use diplomacy, negotiation, and even bribery to advance our cause.
We have the freedom to make deals at any point in the game, whether with our Ally or with an Enemy. Here’s an example:
“If you promise to stay away from Kyoto this Season, I’ll promise to stay away from Hokkaido,” I say to my opponent. “But remember, promises can be broken, and if you break it, don’t expect me to make another deal with you.”
Keep in mind, though, that deals in this game are not set in stone. Players can change their minds at any time, but they should be aware that others may not be keen to strike a deal with them again. Deals can also be made secretly, without others hearing them.
Bribes, or “tokens of friendship,” can only be offered during the Tea Ceremony and the Political Phase, not during the War Phase. If players want to convince others to do something, they are allowed to offer Coins and Ronin tokens from their reserve. For instance:
“I’ll give you 2 Coins if you agree to ally with me this Season,” I propose. “And if you play Harvest now, I’ll share half of the Ronin I’ll receive from my Harvest Rewards with you.”
