Hey there! If you’re playing a three-player game, here’s what you need to do to mix things up a bit: when you’re setting up, each player gets four Atlanteans in their color (three followers and one Leader), and keep another three in reserve. You can control a total of seven Atlanteans, okay?

Now, during the Suffer Misfortunes phase, after everyone has drawn and dealt with a misfortune, the starting player will draw and deal with an extra misfortune. So be ready for some extra challenges!

Got only two players? No problem!

If you’re playing with just two players, here’s what you do: during setup, each player gets five Atlanteans in their color (four followers and one Leader), and keep another three in reserve. You can control up to seven Atlantean followers, okay?

But wait, there’s more! The starting player, during setup, also gets to take the Hologram meeple along with their starting Atlantean followers. Exciting, right? Keep reading to find out all about the Hologram rules!

When playing the Suffer Misfortunes phase, I draw and deal with two misfortunes at a time.

Playing Alone

If I’m playing alone, things are a little different. I need to make some adjustments to the setup and how the game is played:

When setting up the game, I choose five Atlanteans of the same color, which includes four followers and one Leader. I also have three additional Atlanteans in reserve. In total, I can control up to seven Atlantean followers.

I start the game with the Hologram and Automaton meeples along with my starting Atlanteans. The rules for the Hologram remain the same, and I can find the rules for the Automaton on the next page.

At the start of each turn, including the first, I receive one mystic energy. I recommend placing these energy tokens on the rounds spaces of the Wrath of the Gods track as a reminder.

During the Suffer Misfortunes phase, I draw and handle four misfortunes, one at a time.

The Hologram

When you’re getting everything set up, you’ll need to shuffle and make a stack of the unused councilor boards. This stack is called the councilor stack. Every round, the person who goes first will receive the Hologram.

The Hologram is a special Leader that also counts as your Atlantean for that round. To figure out how powerful the Hologram is for the round, the person who goes first looks at the top two boards of the councilor stack. They pick one to use and put the other one in a discard pile.

When the round is over, you’ll put the Hologram’s councilor board into the discard pile for the Hologram. If you run out of boards in the councilor stack, you’ll need to reshuffle the discard pile to make a new stack.

When I use the Hologram, it behaves like a regular character and has the unique skills of the councilor I selected (but not my own councilor). If the Hologram gathers resources, mystical energy, or library cards, the player controlling the Hologram collects them and stores them in their own reserve.

The Automaton

The Automaton is a unique worker that counts as one of your Atlanteans. It doesn’t count as a follower, so it won’t be affected by the Plague misfortune.

You can’t place the Automaton on a tile by itself. It always needs to accompany another Atlantean, including the Hologram.

Unlike other Atlanteans, the Automaton doesn’t take actions or collect resources, mystic energy, or library cards. Instead, it has a special ability to boost the die rolls of up to two other Atlanteans by +2 when they are placed with it.

Changing the Difficulty

If you want to adjust the difficulty of the game, you can change the setup as described below.

Lots of choices! You can either select components from each of the types mentioned or pick them randomly. To get started, we recommend Level 1 and these: Mystic Siphon (B), Matter Converter (B), Numinous Beacon (C), and Entropy Drive (C). Don’t forget the A components and Power Core. If you’re a pro, you can try a higher difficulty level.

Feel free to play around with the difficulty. Make it easier or more challenging by adjusting controlled floods, calm seas, adding the Hologram or Automaton (the starting player can control them), or starting at a higher number on the Wrath of the Gods track.
