Teamwork

The Story

When we play Detective, there’s an overall story that connects all five cases in the box. As we investigate, we might come across clues that don’t seem related to the current case. Sometimes, they might be dead ends. But other times, they could be important clues that we’ll need to solve future cases.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand the meaning of a clue right away. It might become important later on.

One Case, One Deck

Each case has its own deck of 36 cards. This deck includes a cover card and 35 “lead” cards. Remember not to shuffle or go through the deck! Only draw cards when instructed to do so.

Always read the front side of the cards, unless told otherwise. Once you draw a lead card, you can look at it whenever you need during the investigation.

Explore Different Leads

When starting a case, you’ll find a few lead cards and clues to begin with. It’s a good idea to follow these leads before deciding which path to investigate further.

When it comes to investigating a complex mystery, it’s important to consider a variety of clues and not solely focus on one lead. By following multiple leads, I can paint a broader picture of what’s really going on.

Notes

Keeping good notes is crucial when dealing with five interconnected cases in the base game. If I jump into a later case without remembering important names and clues from earlier cases, it will be challenging to piece everything together.

Don’t hesitate to jot down essential names and connect them with lines to establish their relationship with one another, as well as with evidence, dates, places, and events. Additionally, I recommend creating a mind map to help organize your thoughts.

Solving Cases with Limited Clues

When solving a case, you won’t always have access to every clue. Time constraints mean you’ll only see a fraction of the deck, usually about twenty cards. But fear not, for this is a game of deduction!

Remember, what really matters is how you piece everything together, not how many clues you uncover. So don’t be discouraged if you don’t go through the entire deck. Trust your investigative skills and trust the process.

No Easy “You Win” Card

Time to Be Creative!

Game Setup

1. Put the board on the table where everyone can reach it.

2. Put the Investigation Team marker (or IT marker) on the Headquarters Location.

3. Put the Time marker on the 8:00 AM space of the Time track.

4. Put the Day marker on the day 1 space of the Day track.

5. Each player gets to choose an investigator tile. Put your investigator tile face up and take the Skill token that’s shown in the bottom right-hand corner of the tile (5a).

6. Turn any leftover investigator tiles over to their Consultant side and take the Skill tokens that are shown on those tiles (6a).

7. Make a pool of all the Skill tokens that the investigators and consultants have.

8. Go to the Antares website at antaresdatabase.com and log in. Then pick your campaign and the case you want to play.

Days And Hours

Every day, I have a set schedule divided into eight working hours from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During this time, I can focus on different tasks and activities required for my work. But here’s the interesting part – I have the option to work Overtime, which means I can put in extra hours after my regular working hours.

You might be tempted to think that working Overtime is a great idea to get more done, but I have to warn you – there’s a catch. Working Overtime brings its own set of challenges. It can cause stress, and as a result, it can actually hinder my investigation instead of helping it. It’s like a double-edged sword.

So, while it may be tempting to work Overtime, I have to consider the consequences. I don’t want to jeopardize my investigation by burning myself out. Stress can be a tricky thing to manage, and if I let it get out of control, it can have a negative impact on my ability to think clearly and make accurate deductions. It’s important for me to maintain a balance and not overexert myself.

Overall, I need to be mindful of how I spend my time each day. I have to utilize my regular working hours efficiently and make the most of them. Daily Activity

Hey there! When I play the game, there aren’t any individual turns or phases. We all work together as a team and make decisions together. It’s important that we talk as a team and figure out our next steps. Sometimes, we’ll need to move the IT marker on the game board or change the Time marker on the Time track, depending on what we decide.

When we take actions during a day, we have a few options. We can:

• Dig deeper,

• Perform another action based on the case introduction or a specific card.

Each action will let us know if we need to move the Time marker forward.

Example: So, I decide to draw a lead card and read it. That’s when I move the Time marker, following the instructions. But here’s the cool part—I get access to two more lead cards in the “Further Leads” section. How awesome is that?

Now, I have a choice. I can either draw and read one of the new lead cards, which means I’ll have to advance the Time tracker again. Or, I can check something in the Antares Database without using up any Time tracker points. Decisions, decisions.

Alright, let’s say I go with the first option. I draw another lead card, but this time it’s in a different Location. That means I have to move the IT marker first and then advance the Time tracker by an hour. Finally, I can read the card and see what it has in store for me.

Once I’m done with that, I adjust the Time marker based on what the card told me. And then, guess what? I decide to write a report! But hey, I’m not done yet—there’s still another lead card waiting to be checked. What a busy day!

Day’s End

When it’s 4:00 PM and the Time marker reaches that point, I have a choice to make. Do I want to work Overtime or End the Day? If I End the Day, then here’s what I need to do:

• Move the Day marker to the next day on the Day tracker,
• Reset the Time tracker to 8:00 AM,
• Move the IT marker back to Headquarters,
• Sort notes and discuss what you have learned that day,
• Write down all possible leads to keep track of what is available to you.

Play Testing Tip

In my experience, taking a five-minute break after each day to stretch my legs, make some tea or coffee, or eat cookies helps me reset my brain for the next day. This short break helps a lot with processing all of the clues and keeping my team focused.

Three Basic Rules

Rule 1: Clues

When I play the game, I follow clues to solve a case. Each case has three basic types of clues: Leads, the Antares Database, and General Knowledge.

Lead Cards

Lead cards are like puzzle pieces that help me solve crimes. They give me information about crime scenes, witnesses, evidence, and other important details that I uncover during my investigation. Each lead is represented by a card that has a unique number, like #103.

When I first get a new card, I can only look at the front side. But later, if I’m told to do so, I can flip it over and look at the “B” side.

Every lead card shows the hour value and the Location where I can find it.

There are always exactly 35 lead cards in each case.

Note

Before I follow a lead, which means drawing and reading a lead card, I know the card number and its Location, but not its hour value. The time it will take me to complete a lead depends on many factors. However, I can make an estimate based on the card’s Location:

Headquarters – When I need to gather a lot of information and do extensive research, the Antares system helps me speed things up. These leads usually take one to two hours to complete. Interrogations might take longer.

Richmond PD & Courthouse – Going through the archives at the police department and courthouse takes time. These leads typically take two to three hours to complete.

The Lab – Using advanced technology and working with information specialists makes me more efficient, but examining evidence can still take up to four hours.

Fieldwork – These leads can take me to different places around town, so each lead card will take at least two hours. Unless I’m in a hurry!

Rule 2: Time

Here’s the deal: solving a crime takes time. In Detective, we represent the passage of time using two markers – the Time marker and the Day marker. See, investigators have a certain amount of time to crack each case, and each lead card has an hour value tied to it.

So, when you draw a lead card, you gotta move the Time marker a certain number of spaces on the Time track, just like the card says. It’s all about managing your time and making every minute count!

For this task, you have to shift the Time marker by 3 hours on the Time track in order to resolve this card.

Ending The Day

Once the Time marker reaches 4:00 PM, it means work hours are finished. Unless you choose to go into Overtime, the Time token should then be moved to 8:00 AM and the Day marker shifted to the following day.

When you’ve completed your investigation, make sure to remove all Used Ability tokens () from your investigator tiles. After you’ve finished the final day of your investigation, it’s time to wrap things up by creating a Final Report in the Antares Database. Once you’ve done that, read the epilogue that corresponds to your report.

Overtime & Stress

I have a little secret to share with you. If you feel like you need more time to finish everything, you can use the overtime spaces on the time track. This will let you keep working after the clock strikes 4:00 PM. Just move the time marker on the time track to 5:00 PM, and beyond if you need it.

The neat thing about overtime is that you can use as many extra hours as you want. After you’ve completed your actions and moved the time track accordingly, you can decide to end your day. It’s all up to you!

Have you ever had to work overtime? It can be a real pain, especially when you’re already tired and ready to go home. Sometimes, though, you don’t have a choice. When the value of a lead card forces me to work past 4:00 PM, I have to take overtime. It’s frustrating, but it’s part of the job.

• If you work after 4:00 PM, add 1 Stress token to your Token pool for each hour.
• If you collect enough Stress tokens to meet or exceed your Stress limit (shown in the case introduction), your investigation ends immediately, and you must go to the Antares Database to complete your final report.

Rule 3: Locations

The Detective game board has five Locations. Your office is Headquarters, where everything revolves.

The Richmond Police Department is where you can access files and evidence from old cases. In the Lab, you can examine evidence found at the crime scene.

In the Courthouse, you can access archives and documents from past trials. You’ll also find helpful consultants there who can offer important advice.

Fieldwork is the term we use to describe all the different places we go to during an investigation. These places can be anywhere in the city, like restaurants, parking lots, or even people’s houses. Sometimes, we even have to travel to different parts of the world for our work.

Now, let’s say you have a Lead card that you want to follow, but you’re not in the right place yet. Here’s what you need to do:

• To play the game, you need to do two things:
• Move the IT marker to the right place on the board.
• Move the Time marker forward to show how much time has passed.

For example: I have to solve lead card #105. It says I need to go to the Richmond Police Department. But I’m currently at The Lab, so I have to get there first! I’ll move the IT marker to the Richmond PD and advance the Time marker by one hour.

Remember:

At the start of each day, please place the IT marker on the Headquarters Location.

Some lead cards don’t have a location, so you can follow them from wherever you are without moving your IT marker.

Things I can do

Follow a Lead

When I start a case, I can look at the “Further Leads” section in the casebook, which gives me a list of lead cards. I can choose to follow these leads in any order I want, and I can ignore any leads that I don’t want to pursue.

But there’s a catch – once I draw a lead card, I have to resolve it. I can’t just check the hour value and required skill and decide not to proceed.

So, if I decide to follow a lead, here’s what I need to do:

1. First, I search the deck for the lead card that matches the number of the lead I want to follow.
2. Then, I check the location mentioned on the lead card and move the IT marker and Time marker accordingly, if needed.
3. I also need to check the hour value mentioned on the lead card and move the Time marker ahead by the appropriate number of spaces.
4. Finally, I read the contents of the lead card out loud to all the players. I have to keep the back side of the card hidden, unless I am instructed otherwise.
5. First, make sure to follow all the instructions on the lead card.
6. If you come across a Signature, you need to enter it into the Antares Database, under the Signatures section.
7. Decide whether or not you can “Dig Deeper” into the lead.
8. Take note of any Further Leads that may come up. (Refer to the “Further Leads” section for more information.)
9. Once you have completed these steps, set the card aside as it is now resolved.

If you don’t see this symbol: or you didn’t investigate further, put the card on the right side of the game board to remember that you can’t look at the other side of these lead cards.

Have you ever seen the flip side of a card? Maybe you were playing a game like Digging Deeper, and the instructions told you to look at the back of the card. Well, when that happens, you need to place the card on the left side of the game board. This is where you keep all the cards that have both sides available to you.

How to Play

When you see this symbol, it means you should flip the card and read the information on the back. You might need to do this because you’ve been given extra instructions, or because you can do it freely.

If you come across the word “read,” it means you need to immediately read the card or entry from the Antares Database. If there are multiple clues to read, you can read them in any order you like.

When you encounter the word “choose,” it means you have to make a decision about what action to take. You’ll usually have different options to follow or different clues to read. Once you make your choice, you can’t go back and check the other options. You have to stick with the lead you chose or follow any instructions given in the Antares Database.

“Add a Plot Card” – Plot cards are special cards that represent leads for future cases.

Example: Imagine you’re a detective, and you’re interrogating a suspect. The suspect tells you a story, but something doesn’t feel right. You have a gut feeling that they’re hiding the truth. However, their alibi seems solid. In this situation, you have the option to dig deeper and uncover more information. Are you satisfied with what you know, or do you want to uncover the hidden truths?

When you choose to dig deeper, you have to decide if it’s worth spending one of your limited tokens. Each case only allows you a set number of tokens, so think carefully about how you use them. You can choose to dig deeper or not, and you can keep making this choice until you decide to follow a different lead.

In some rare cases, you might have the opportunity to follow multiple lead cards simultaneously. This could happen when you come across something called a “Read” keyword. If this happens, you’ll have the chance to dig deeper after reading all of the lead cards you’ve just followed. This gives you even more chances to uncover the truth.

When it comes to playing Digging Deeper, trust your instincts. You don’t have to investigate every lead extensively. Sometimes it won’t reveal anything interesting, while other times it will confirm what you already suspected. Occasionally, you may even discover new information!

If you do this, you move the Time marker ahead by one space and add 1 to your Token pool, giving you a nice little boost. Just keep in mind that you can’t write a report during Overtime hours. Gotta play by the rules!

Each case gives you a specific amount of time, like three days, to finish up your investigation. And hey, as for the final day? Well, it all wraps up at 4:00 PM, or later if you decide to put in some Overtime hours. You’ve got a bit of flexibility there.

Once you finally decide to wrap up your work and call it a day, it’s time to log into the Antares Database. All you gotta do is select “Final Report” from the menu. From there, you’ll be able to put together a virtual report that covers the whole case. It’s split into two sections, so you can organize your thoughts and findings nice and neatly.

When it comes to this task, let me break it down for you. We’ve got two sections to cover: one for the main questions and another for the extra questions. And here’s the thing, you and I will work together to answer each and every one of these questions. It’s all about the goal of the case and the metaplot. So, let’s get started!

Now, here’s a little twist. The answers to these questions won’t be spelled out for you. Nope, no cheating here. Instead, we’re gonna have to put our heads together and deduce the answers. It’s like a little mystery we need to solve!

Here’s the deal. Each case has a certain number of points you gotta rack up to win. So, keep that in mind as we go along. We’ve got a mission, and we’re gonna ace it!

• The questions that carry the most weight are the main ones.
• The additional questions have the lowest point value.
• When you enter evidence into the Antares Database, you’ll earn extra points. These points are more valuable than the additional questions but not as much as the main ones.
• You will also be asked to report the number of Stress tokens you’ve collected. Each token will deduct 1 point.

Once you finish your report, the Antares Database will automatically calculate your final score and determine whether you’ve won the case. If you come out on top, it’s time to celebrate your success!

If you lose, you can have another go at the case or move on to the next one. To have another go, just reset the lead deck to how it was at the start. To move on to the next case, put back all the lead cards that you didn’t use and place the ones you did use in their special spot in the insert.

• Once the game is finished, you can’t read any lead cards that you didn’t draw!
• Each “I don’t know” answer doesn’t give you any points.
• Each wrong answer takes away a point.
• Getting the maximum number of points for every case is almost impossible (sometimes, you’ll need to use Overtime hours, for example).
