You’ll notice that every card has a value. This value determines its strength and importance. The higher the value, the more powerful the card is. So, keep an eye out for those high-value cards!
But beware, my friend. The game is not just about accumulating cards blindly. Some cards have special effects, such as the ability to sabotage your opponents or boost your own chances. So, be wise and tactical when playing your cards!
As you progress in the game, you’ll also have the opportunity to upgrade your chancery. Upgrades are like power-ups that give your chancery an extra edge. They can improve your resource production or provide other advantages. Use them wisely to further boost your chances of success!
One crucial aspect of Chancery Expansion is the element of strategy. You have to carefully plan your moves, considering both short-term gains and long-term goals. Some cards may have instant benefits, while others can set you up for future success. It’s all about finding the right balance.

What’s in the Box?
- A Chancery board
- 18 dice tiles
- 18 commission cards
- 36 city tokens
- A cloth bag
How to Set it Up

Let’s get started on setting up the game board. First, put the Chancery board next to the main board. Then, grab the cloth bag and put all 18 dice tiles in it, along with the Building tiles. Make sure each player has 3 City tokens.
Now, it’s time to prepare the Commission cards. Shuffle them and give each player 3 cards face down. Take a look at your cards and choose 1 to keep. Keep this card a secret from the other players. Put back the cards you didn’t choose back into the deck. Shuffle the deck and place it near the Chancery board.
Each player should draw 1 dice tile from the bag and place it on top of their Commission card.
Let’s Talk About the Chancery Board
The Chancery board is an important place where you can send your Workers to become Apprentices. This will give you some really valuable benefits in the game.
Let’s talk about the apprentice slot: Each slot is connected to a specific Race and Desk. This means that depending on the Race and Desk, the slot will have different features and benefits.
Now, let’s move on to the benefits: Each Desk offers a special advantage to the player who has their Apprentice sitting there. These benefits can help you in various ways during the game.
Next up, the die slot: Each slot is associated with the Desks above and below it. It’s like a bridge that connects these Desks. The die slots play an important role in the game.
Now, let’s dive into the specifics of the Chancery:
In the Chancery, there are six die slots available. Each slot requires a dice value from 1 to 6. However, in games with 2 to 4 players, only the top 6 Desks are available. But don’t worry! In games with 5 or 6 players, all 12 Desks are up for grabs.
Finally, if you want to place your Worker as an Apprentice in the Chancery, there are a few requirements you need to meet. It’s important to keep these requirements in mind:

To play the game, follow these steps:
1. Put a die with a matching value on an empty die slot.
2. Make sure you have a completed Settlers card that matches the race of the corresponding desk.
3. Have a Worker in your Workers Lot to place an Apprentice.
Remember, the Apprentice must be placed on an empty and associated desk. You cannot transfer other Apprentices or Guild Masters to the Chancery.
Once you place an Apprentice in the Chancery, they must stay there. You can’t recall them back to your Workers Lot, move them to a Guild, or move them to another Desk in the Chancery.
Having Apprentices in the Chancery gives you three benefits:
1. Desk Benefit

If you’re playing the game, you’ll be glad to know that you can benefit from your desk as many times as you want.
Now, here are some special abilities you can enjoy:
- You can fulfill Stone Council tiles without paying the Coins shown on the tiles.
- For each Good you sell at the Port, you’ll receive +1 Coin.
- Instead of going back two spaces on the Reputation track when you fulfill a Stone Council tile, you’ll only go back one space.
- When you visit Cavern Tavern, you can take 2 Settlers cards instead of just 1.
- At the Construction Yard, you’ll pay 1 less Coin when you buy a House.
- Similarly, at the Guild Hall, you’ll pay 1 less Coin when you buy a Building.
End of Round Income Benefit
During the Income phase, you’ll collect 3 Coins for each of your Apprentices in the Chancery. So, the more Apprentices you have there, the more Coins you’ll receive!
Ability to Take Additional Commission Cards Benefit
Having Apprentices in the Chancery is great because it gives you the ability to take one additional Commission card for each Apprentice you have. This means you’ll have more options and opportunities for success!
Commission Cards
Hey there! When we play with the Chancery expansion, each of us starts the game with a special card called a Commission card. These cards can be super helpful because they give us extra Victory Points at the end of the game if we activate them and meet the conditions written on them. But shhh – keep your Commission card a secret from the other players!
Each Commission card needs its own dice tile. To activate a Commission card, you have to fill up all the spots on its dice tile with the required dice. That means you gotta place all the right dice in all the right spots!
Now, on your turn, you can use your die placement action to put a die on a spot that matches the one on your dice tile. The cool thing is, you don’t have to complete a dice tile all at once. You can do it bit by bit, step by step, throughout the whole game.
When I take my die back during the Upkeep phase, I need to put a City token on the die slot to show that it’s done. Once I complete the entire tile, I can activate the Commission card by putting the tile on the right spot on the back of the card. Remember, only activated cards will give me Victory Points when the game ends.

Taking a Commission Card
During the game, you can get more Commission cards. You can hold as many cards as you have Apprentices in the Chancery, plus one for your original card.
To get an additional Commission card, you need to meet these conditions:
- Have at least one Apprentice in the Chancery. Each Apprentice lets you get one Commission card.
- Put a die in Berk the Clerk’s office, following the usual placement rules.
Each slot in the Clerk’s office offers a different action.
- If you put a die with a value of 1 or 2:
- Take 1 Commission card from the top of the deck.
- If you put a die with a value of 3 or 4:
- Take 2 Commission cards from the deck. Choose 1 and put the other back on the bottom of the deck.
Whenever you end up on a specific space on the Reputation track, you need to do certain actions. For example, if you go back 2 spaces, you should also draw 3 Commission cards and choose 1 to keep. If you go back 3 spaces, you simply draw 3 Commission cards.
Now, after you pick a Commission card from one of the die slots, right away, you must draw a random dice tile from the cloth bag and take 3 City tokens.
One important thing to note is that when you use Berk the Clerk’s Office to get a new Commission card, you can still do the normal actions like taking Modifier tokens or replacing Settlers or Buildings.
