Discover the Exciting Rules of the King of Tokyo Game!
Hey there! Let’s dive into the awesome world of the King of Tokyo game and unravel its thrilling rules. Buckle up and get ready!
Monsters and Power Cards
First things first, we all love monsters, don’t we? In this game, you get to become a mighty creature battling it out with other players. Each monster has its own unique characteristics and abilities. How cool is that?
But wait, there’s more! You can also collect power cards during the game. These cards grant you special powers and abilities that can turn the tide in your favor. Who doesn’t love a little bit of extra firepower?
The Epic Battle for Tokyo
Get ready to rumble! The goal of the game is to become the one and only King of Tokyo. And how do you achieve that? It’s simple – be the last monster standing or reach 20 victory points. The throne is waiting for you, my friend!
When a player enters Tokyo, they become the King of Tokyo. But beware – this position comes with a cost. You’ll be the prime target for the other monsters, and they’ll do everything they can to dethrone you. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!
You’re in Control
Time to unleash your monstrous powers! On your turn, you can roll six dice up to three times. Each roll will determine your actions, such as attacking, healing, or collecting victory points. Choose wisely, my friend – the fate of Tokyo is in your hands.
To Stay or To Flee?
Being the King of Tokyo is no easy task. You’ll face fierce attacks from your opponents, and your monster might get hurt. But fear not! If things get too intense, you can always choose to leave Tokyo and let someone else take the heat. It’s all about survival, my friend.
The Winning Strategy
Everyone wants to be the king, right? So, how do you increase your chances of victory? It’s all about finding the perfect balance between aggression and defense. The more aggressive you are, the faster you’ll gain victory points. But be careful – neglecting defense can leave you vulnerable to your rivals.
Also, keep an eye on the power cards. They can give you that extra boost you need to claim the throne. Collect them wisely and use them strategically.
Are You Ready to Conquer?
Now that you’re equipped with the knowledge of the King of Tokyo game rules, it’s time to grab your dice and start battling! Remember, only one can become the ultimate king. Will you be the monster who reigns supreme? Let the epic showdown begin!

When we play the game, we take turns going around in a circle. First, each player rolls the 6 black dice. The person with the most results goes first. If two or more players have the same number of results, they keep rolling until someone has the most.
The Goal of the Game
In this game, you get to be a massive Monster. Your goal is to do whatever it takes to become the King of Tokyo.

When you go on a rampage, it brings you glory in the form of Victory Points ().
To win, you need to be the first Monster to collect 20 Victory Points. Alternatively, if you prefer a more aggressive approach, you can eliminate your enemies. The last monster standing will claim victory!

I. Rolling the Dice
When it’s your turn, you can roll the dice up to three times. However, remember that you can stop rolling at any point.
During the first roll, you will roll the 6 black dice. If you have a Power card that allows you to do so, you can also roll 1 or 2 green dice. If there are any results you like from the first roll, you can set them aside and reroll the dice you don’t like. On the third roll, you can even choose to reroll the dice you set aside, along with the ones you still don’t like.
Once I’m done rolling my three dice or whenever I decide to stop, it’s time to move on to the next step – resolving the dice. This is where I determine the outcomes of my rolls.
Step 2: Resolve Dice
Now, I have the freedom to resolve my dice in any order I choose, but I must manage to resolve all of them.
The symbols I rolled on my last roll represent the actions I can take during my turn:
Victory Points
If I manage to roll three dice with the same symbol, such as three
,
, or
, I earn a number of
equal to the number of symbols rolled.

When you roll an additional die with the same face, you gain an extra .
Energy
For each
rolled, you gain 1
from the pool of Energy cubes.
Keep the Energy cubes in front of you as a reserve, and you can spend them later.
Smash
If there are other monsters not in the same location as you, they lose 1
for each
rolled.
- 1
: You score 1
the moment you step into Tokyo.
If you’re in Tokyo, whether it’s Tokyo City or Tokyo Bay, and you roll the dice with the image of
, all the Monsters outside of Tokyo will lose
. If you’re outside of Tokyo and you roll the same dice, all the Monsters who are in Tokyo will lose
. These Monsters have the choice to either leave Tokyo or stay. Even if they choose to leave Tokyo, they will still lose
.
When you roll a Claws symbol, you’ll lose one Life Point. And if that causes you to lose all your Life Points, then the Skull icon will appear and you’ll be out of the game. When the Skull icon appears, you’ll have to discard your keep cards and Energy cubes. It’s important to note that no one starts the game in Tokyo, so the first Monster to play doesn’t make anyone lose Life Points with Claws.
Note:
Remember that the loss you experience from the effect of a Power card is distinct from
. You can only take control of Tokyo if you lose
due to
.
Restore
If you’re not in Tokyo, you can recover 1
for each
you roll.
If you’re in Tokyo, then it’s time to roll! Just remember, you won’t earn any points if you roll the claw symbols (you can only score points with Power cards). Don’t forget, you can’t exceed 10 points in total. Here’s an example of how a die roll works:
III. It’s Tokyo Time
When there’s no one in Tokyo, you gotta go in and put your Monster right in Tokyo City.
If you roll at least one
, you can only Yield if you’re a Monster.
Remember: Nobody starts the game in Tokyo. It’s the first player’s job to get in there during this step.
Tokyo’s Got Its Pros and Cons
Being in Tokyo (either Tokyo City or Tokyo Bay) has its ups and downs:
I love playing King of Tokyo! It’s such a fun game with exciting rules. Are you ready to learn more about it? Let me explain some important aspects.
First, let’s talk about Tokyo. If you start your turn in Tokyo, you’ll gain 2 victory points. That’s a nice bonus to have! But here’s the catch: monsters in Tokyo cannot use the Heal action. Don’t worry, though, you can still use Power cards to gain health.
Now, let’s discuss the smashing action. Who doesn’t love smashing things, right? Well, the targets of your smash depend on where you are. If you’re in Tokyo, all monsters outside of Tokyo will lose health. That’s quite a powerful position to be in!
I hope these rules make sense to you. King of Tokyo is a really cool game where you get to be a monster and battle it out with your friends. So get ready to roll those dice and unleash your inner monster!
When it comes to playing King of Tokyo, one of the important rules to remember is that if a monster is outside of Tokyo and causes damage to all monsters inside Tokyo, the monsters inside Tokyo lose health points. You can only choose to leave Tokyo after losing health points from damage caused by another monster. Now, let’s move on to the next rule. It’s time to talk about buying power cards.

Hey there, I’ve got some good news for you! Now you can purchase one or even more of the three cards that are face-up. It’s super simple. To get a Power card, all you need to do is spend as much as the cost shown at the top of the card. And guess what? As soon as you buy a card, a new one becomes available right away at the top of the deck. How cool is that? You’ve got instant access to fresh cards you can buy anytime you want!

If you want, you can pay 2 to gather all three face-up cards and put them in the discard pile. After that, three new Power cards will be drawn from the deck and revealed. These new cards will be ready for you to buy right away.

As long as you have enough to spare, you can keep buying or collecting cards.

Step 5: Time to Wrap Up
Some Power card effects kick in when you finish your turn.

When you finish, give the dice to the person sitting next to you.
The game is over

When you’re playing the game, it all comes down to the last round. That’s when everything is decided – which Monster will reach 20 first or if there will be only one Monster left standing.

Hey there! Did you know that the Monster who reaches 20 or is the last survivor is crowned King of Tokyo? Pretty cool, right?
