Before You Begin

1 Basic Setup

First, choose your color. Each player gets to pick one of the available colors. Once you have chosen your color, you will receive the following:

  • A Home Territory Tile in your chosen color. This is a special tile that consists of a Home Castle and Village along the River.
  • All Scotsmen in your chosen color.
  • All Clan Markers in your chosen color.

Make sure to place one of your Scotsmen on your Starting Village Tile.

2 Setting up the table
  • Put both the Clan Board and the Rondel in the center of the table.
  • Gather the following items and place them next to the board as a general pool: Whisky Casks, Resource Tokens (Wood, Stone, Barley, Sheep, Cattle), Coins, and Victory Point chips.
  • To set up the game, begin by placing the Landmark Cards next to the board. Start with the A Landmark Cards face up, and add the B, C, and D Landmark Cards as the respective Tile stacks come into play.
  • Next, determine the initial player order. Each player takes one of their Scotsmen as a Playing Piece and shuffles them in their closed hand. Then, set the Playing Pieces in a random order on the Rondel, placing them in consecutive spaces starting from any space.
  • The player in last position will be the starting player and receives 5 Coins. The next players in player order receive 6, 7, and 8 Coins respectively.
  • If you’re playing with 2 players, place the Die in the space clockwise ahead of the first Playing Piece.
  • 3 or 4 players: If you’re playing with 3 or 4 players, you can choose whether or not to use the Die. Using the Die shortens the playtime. If you decide to use the Die, place it in the space ahead of the first Playing Piece in a clockwise direction.

What are the Chronicles?

The Chronicles are expansions for Glen More II: Chronicles that introduce new gameplay elements to the base game. If you’re new to Glen More II: Chronicles, it might be best to play your first few games without any Chronicles.

We recommend starting with one Chronicle and gradually adding more for the best experience. You can freely combine different Chronicles.

You can start by adding the 1st Chronicle called “Highland Boat Race” once you feel comfortable with the base game mechanics.

Sorting the Tile Stacks

    The Setup Process

    Let me guide you through the setup process. It’s actually quite simple! First, we need to gather all the necessary components.

    Assembling the Tiles

    We have four sets of tiles, labeled A, B, C, and D on the back. Your task is to shuffle each set and place them facedown on their designated areas on the game board.

    Adding the “The End” Tile

    Now, take the “The End” Tile and place it roughly in the middle of the D-Stack. This tile adds an unpredictability to the game, making it more exciting!

    Getting Started with the Game

    If you’re playing the game for the first time or want a shorter game, I recommend placing the “The End” Tile on top of the D-Stack instead of in the middle. This will make the game faster.

    Arranging the Rondel

    Let’s move on to setting up the Rondel, an essential part of the game. Follow these steps:

    1. Take the five Starting Tiles, which have an “S” on the back, and place them face up in front of the Playing Pieces or the Die, if you’re using it.
    2. Fill the remaining spaces of the Rondel with Tiles from the A stack. Start from the space next to the Starting Tiles and move clockwise.
    3. Leave the space behind the last Playing Piece empty, as indicated in the illustration.

    That’s it! You’ve successfully completed the setup process. Now you’re ready to dive into the game and explore all its possibilities!

    The Rondel should be set up like this: Playing Pieces 1,2, (3, 4) – (Die) – Tiles S – Tiles A (..). – Empty Space.

    If you’re playing with 2 or 3 players, put 1 Coin from the pool on the leftmost space (marked with a 1) of each Market row.

    Put the David Hume Tile near the Clanboard.

    For the Advanced Game Setup, refer to the specific Chronicle Rules for changes to the setup. Choose the Chronicles you want to use and add their content to the game according to the Chronicle rules.

    Before you play your first game, make sure you have everything set up correctly.

    Hey there! So here’s what you need to do: organize the materials from the punch board sheets into the Chronicle Tuck Boxes. It’s actually pretty simple – just look for the Chronicle Icon on the punch board sheets and sort the materials into the Tuck Box that has the matching symbol. This way, it’s super easy to sort everything after you’ve played the game.

    Now, let’s talk about how the game is played. It’s divided into 4 rounds. The first round ends when the last Tile from the A stack is placed on the Rondel. Then, the second round ends when the last B Tile is placed on the Rondel. Finally, the third round ends when the last C Tile is placed on the Rondel.

    Every time the last Tile from a stack (A-C) is placed, there’s a scoring phase. Once you’ve reached the 4th round, it comes to an end when all players have moved on or over the “The End Tile”. At this point, there’s a final scoring phase.

    Turn Order

    Just so you know, this game doesn’t have a set order for players!

    Your turn comes when your Playing Piece is at the back of the Rondel, next to the empty space. You can move your Playing Piece as far as you want on the Rondel. You can even take multiple turns in a row if you stay in last place.

    That also means that players might have taken a different number of turns when the game ends.

    The Die

    The Die acts like another player, taking Tiles randomly and making the game go faster. This part only matters if you use the Die.

    If the Die is in the last position, it gets rolled and moved forward the number of Tiles shown on the Die (not the number of spaces – it doesn’t care about Playing Pieces).

    If the Die lands on a Tile with a Chronicle Icon, I move the Die to the next Tile without the Icon. The Tile where the Die lands is then put in the Discard Pile and the Die takes its place. But, the Die can’t remove the “The End Tile”.

    After the Die moves and most likely removes a Tile, I figure out which Player is next on the Rondel.

    For example: If I roll a 2 and the Die moves 2 Tiles, but the second Tile has a Chronicle Icon, I ignore that Tile and move the Die to the next one. The Tile with the Chronicle Icon goes to the Discard Pile. Bye-bye Loch Lochy.

    My Turn

    When it’s my turn to play, here’s what I do:

    • I move my game piece to any spot on the Rondel that has a tile.
    • I take that tile and put my game piece in its place, making sure to pay any costs that are required.
    • I follow the rules for where to put the tile.
    • I activate the tile I just placed, as well as the up to eight tiles around it.
    • I add one or more tiles from the current stack to the Rondel, filling up the board until there is only one empty space left behind the last game piece.

    If I place the last tile from a stack, we tally up the points before the next player takes their turn.

    The D-Stack works differently, though. We score the points when all the players have moved past the “The End Tile”.

    Note: If you move your playing piece over a tile without taking it, the tile will be placed in the discard pile. So at the end of your turn, you might add more than one tile from the stack to the game.

    The Market: Buying and Selling Resources

    During my turn, I have the option to buy or sell resources at the Market. This is an important aspect of the game that I need to understand.

    The Market is in the middle of the Rondel, and it has numbered fields for each of the 5 resources. These fields are labeled 1, 2, and 3.

    Buying Resources

    If I want to buy a resource, I can place Coins on the leftmost empty field for that resource. The number of Coins I place depends on the field number – 1, 2, or 3. But if there are no empty fields available, I won’t be able to buy that resource.

    If you want to buy resources in the game, you can do so, but only if you use them right away to pay for something. For example, you can use resources to pay for tiles or trade them for other resources. However, you can’t buy resources just to keep as a stockpile.

    Selling

    If you want to sell resources, you can put them back into the pool and take some coins in return. You can sell resources as long as there are coins available for that resource in the market. However, if there are no more coins left, you won’t be able to sell that resource. You can sell as many resources as you want during your turn.

    You can sell resources at any point during your turn, even before you activate any special abilities or produce new resources. It’s a good idea to sell resources if you need to make space for new ones.

    They’re not things you can get or exchange.

    Getting Started with the Game

    When you’re learning how to play, you might want to put one of each thing on any empty spot in the market. If someone buys something, they take it from the market and put that many coins in its place.

    If someone sells something to the market, they take the coins from the market and put the thing they sold in its place. This way, it’s easy to see what things are available – even though it means handling them a little more.

    Getting Tiles from the Circle Thingy

    Move your game piece onto a tile that you want.

    Before I can take a Tile, I need to pay for it. This means using the resources or Coins I have. If I don’t have enough, I can also buy the needed resources from the Market. But if I need to pay a Scotsman, I have to use a Tile from my Home Territory.

    If I can’t afford the cost, I can’t choose that Tile.

    But in the rare case where I can’t legally take any of the available Tiles, I have another option. I can discard a Tile by moving onto it. Then, I can either take 1 Coin from the pool or get 1 Movement Point.

When you activate a tile with the Movement Icon in its bottom right, you gain 1 Movement Point.

With each Movement Point, you can move 1 Scotsman from your current tile to a neighboring tile in your territory, either orthogonally or diagonally.

The Overbuild Tile itself activates, along with all the Tiles next to it. It’s like a party of activations! However, the Tile that was overbuilt is now sort of hidden below the Overbuild Tile. It becomes quiet and doesn’t activate anymore. Oh, and it doesn’t count towards your final score, so keep that in mind!

Now, let’s talk about Persons, Clan Markers, and the Clan Board. It’s like having your own little team within the game. These special markers and the board give you a strategic advantage.

When you take a Person in the game, you don’t add the Tile to your Clan Territory. Instead, you put it in a separate supply next to your Whisky Casks and Landmark Cards.

This means that taking a Person doesn’t activate any tiles in your territory and they don’t count towards the size of your territory in the final scoring.

However, Persons have a special effect. By taking a Person, you gain the favor of another Clan:

You can place one of your Clan Markers on an empty Clan Field on the Clan Board. To do this, you must pay the cost shown on the roads connecting the chosen Clan Field with either the green Start Field or any Clan Field that already has a Clan Marker, regardless of the player’s color.

When I play the game, I have to pay the Coin cost indicated on the roads to the pool. If I don’t have enough Coins, I can’t choose this Clan Field.

After paying the road cost, I get the bonus from the Clan. I can only claim each Clan Field once per game.

The Scoring Rounds

There are 4 Scoring Rounds in the game. The first 3 Scoring Rounds happen when the last Tile of each Tile stack (A, B, and C) is placed on the Rondel. The 4th Scoring Round is explained below (Ending the game).

During each Scoring Round, we compare our achievements in 4 areas to the player who has the least in each category:

  • Number of Scotsmen on the Home Castle Tile (not in any other castle)
  • Number of Landmark Cards
  • Whisky Casks Count
  • Person Tiles Count

You earn points based on how much more you have of each item compared to the player with the least amount.

For example: Let’s look at how the players compare their Landmark Cards. I have 5 Landmark Cards, Andreas has 3, and Steffen has 1. That means I have 4 more Landmark Cards than Steffen, the player with the fewest. As a result, I score 5 Victory Points.

Andreas, on the other hand, has 2 more Landmark Cards than Steffen, so he receives 2 Victory Points. Unfortunately, Steffen has the fewest Landmarks and doesn’t get any Victory Points.

It’s important to note that after the Scoring Round, we get to keep our Scotsmen, Landmark Cards, Whisky Casks, and Person Tiles. They don’t go back to the pool.

End of the Game

The game ends and we have our 4th Scoring Round when the last player moves their Playing Piece onto or over “The End Tile”.

Usually, we’ll all reach “The End Tile”, choose our final Tile from the Rondel, and use it accordingly.

If you don’t want to take another tile from beyond the “The End Tile,” you can finish the game right away by moving onto the “The End Tile.” Multiple players can move onto the “The End Tile.”

If you’re playing with the die, it is removed from the game once it reaches the “The End Tile.”

Here’s how the final scoring works:

  • First, there is a regular scoring based on the rules mentioned above (Scoring).
  • Then, the size of each player’s territory is compared to the smallest player’s territory, which has the fewest tiles. If you have more tiles than the player with the fewest, you lose 3 victory points for each additional tile you have (excluding people).

Example: Let’s say Andreas has 15 Tiles, Matthias has 13, and Steffen has 16. In this situation, Andreas would lose 6 points (since he has 2 more Tiles than Matthias, who has the fewest), resulting in a deduction of -3 Victory Points for each extra Tile. Similarly, Steffen would lose 9 points (having 3 more Tiles than Matthias), resulting in a deduction of -3 Victory Points for each extra Tile.

The ultimate goal of the game is to have the highest number of Victory Points in order to emerge as the winner.

In the event of a tie, where two or more players have the same number of Victory Points, the player who holds the highest number of resources will come out on top. However, if there is still a tie even in terms of resources, the victory will be shared among the tied players.
